Uttar Pradesh Pro Volleyball League Starts

  • The Uttar Pradesh Pro Volleyball League (UPPVL) began with a grand opening ceremony at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex, Greater Noida. The league has been founded by Shi Kulwant Baliyan and is being organised under the leadership of Prabal Pratap Singh Tomar, Organising Chairman. UPPVL aims to provide a powerful platform for the youth of Uttar Pradesh to gain recognition at national and international levels.
  • The following eight teams are participating: Ayodhya Super King, Gorakhpur Giants, Kashi Warriors, Lucknow Tigers, Mathura Yodhyas, Moradabad Bulls, Muzaffarnagar Lions and Noida Thunders.
  • A total of 25 matches will be played during the course of the league, culminating in the Grand Finale on August 21, 2025, where the champion team will be crowned.

Velammal Wins 2025 World Schools Team Championship

  • India's Velammal MHS School claimed the gold medal at the 2025 World Schools Team Championship in Alexandria, Virginia after winning all eight of their matches.
  • This latest title for a team representing India came as India's takeover of the sport is taking shape.

Cricket Australia Signs New Shirt Deal with Westpac

  • Cricket Australia officially announced a new four-year deal with Australia's oldest bank, Westpac, to become the principal partner of the cricket team, bringing an end to Commonwealth Bank's 37-year sponsorship.
  • The partnership will commence with the upcoming series against India and South Africa. This agreement covers all formats of the game in Australia - Test, One-Day Internationals, and T20s, as well as support for Australia A and the under-19 national teams.
  • Westpac's logo, a red coloured 'W', will now feature on the shirts of both Australia's men's and women's sides for all the international matches played by the Aussies. The bank has also become the official sponsor for the Big Bash League, which is played in Australia.

Seventeen Indian Athletes Compete in World Games 2025

  • For the World Games 2025, which are being held in Chengdu, China, from August 7-17, India has sent a squad of 17 members.
  • This is the 12th edition of the World Games, a quadrennial competition for sports not included in the Olympics.
  • Running since 1981, the multi-sport event typically takes place a year after the Olympics. The 2025 World Games feature 253 medal events across 34 sports and 60 disciplines, with powerboating and cheerleading making their debuts at the quadrennial meet.

Archery Association of India Launches First-Ever Archery League

  • The Archery Association of India (AAI) announced the launch of the country's first franchise-based Archery League, featuring both compound and recurve archers. Scheduled for October 2025, the event will take place over 11 days at the Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi, marking a historic moment for Indian archery.
  • The new league will bring together six franchise teams, each comprising a mix of, Top Indian archers, including Olympic and national medalists foreign players, including some from the world's top 10 rankings. This format aims to combine international talent with domestic strength, creating a highly competitive and entertaining platform.

Tanishka Garg Becomes Youngest Punjab Female Chess Player to Earn International Rating

  • Tanishka Garg of Bathinda became the youngest female from Punjab to earn an international chess rating. She, aged eight years and -+4 months, achieved this milestone while competing in the National Chess Tournament (Under-9 category) held in Gurugram last month July 2025).
  • The ratings were officially released in August 2025 following FIDE's standard calculation procedure.
  • Previously, Tanvir Kaur Khinda, aged just over nine, held the distinction of being Punjab's youngest FIDE-rated female player.
  • To secure an initial FIDE rating, a player must compete in at least five games against already-rated opponents and score a minimum of one point (either through a win or two draws). The player's performance must also meet the rating floor of 1,400 or higher, as per revised FIDE guidelines.

Karnataka Emerges Victorious at 41st Sub-Junior National Swimming Championships

The 41st Sub-Junior National Swimming Championships concluded at the Basavangudi Aquatic Centre in Bengaluru, with Karnataka emerging as the overall champions.
The host state secured the top spot with a total of 104 points, while Manipur was the runner-up with 81 points.
Individually, Koijam Athoiba Singh from Manipur was the Best Male Swimmer of the tournament, earning 28 points. Among the girls, Purvi Ritesh Naik from Goa was the Best Female Swimmer with 19 points.

Chess Grandmaster Carlsen Wins at Esports World Cup

  • World number-one Magnus Carlsen became the first ever Chess Esports World Cup Champion after winning the final three games and beat GM Alireza Firouzja in the Grand Final. Carlsen took the $250,000 top prize and saw his Team Liquid sneak ahead in the overall championship. GM Hikaru Nakamura overcame GM Arjun Erigaisi 3.5-2.5 and took third place in a thrilling match where all but one of the six games was decisive.

India Women's Wrestling Team Shines at U-17 World Wrestling Championship with Six Medals

  • At the 2025 Under-17 World Championship in Athens (Greece), the Indian women wrestlers showcased their dominance on the world stage.
  • The Indian women's wrestling team secured a total of 6 medals--2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 1 Bronze, bringing glory to the nation, according to a release from the Wrestling Federation of India.
  • The Indian women's wrestling team clinched the Champion Trophy with 151 points, while the USA finished as runners-up with 142 points, and Japan secured the third position with 113 points.
  • The annual tournament concluded on August 3, 2025.

Khalid Jamil Named India Coach

  • Jamil, who is currently the coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, became the first Indian to coach the national team after 13 years. Savio Madeira was the last home-grown coach to be given the top job in October 2011. His stint lasted till March 2012.
  • Jamil, replaced Manolo Marquez, was selected from a shortlist of three coaches, which included former India coach Stephen Constantine and Slovakian manager Stefan Tarkovic.
