The 4th Edition of Freedom Fighter Jhagaru Gour Memorial Football tournament kicks off in Assam

The 4^th edition of Freedom Fighter Jhagaru Gour Memorial Football Tournament was inaugurated at Sonabeel Tea Estate, Sonitpur district, Assam.
The tournament, being held from August 9 to 24, 2025, is a tribute to Jhagaru Gour, a revered Adivasi freedom fighter who belongs to Orangajuli Tea Garden under Udalguri district, Assam. The Grand opening ceremony was graced by Brigadier Tanuj Pandey, Commander of the 106 Artillery Brigade, as the chief guest.
The tournament is regarded as the largest and most prestigious football tournament in Assam's tea garden region, providing a vital platform for young players to demonstrate their skills and nurture sportsmanship. For many youth, here, football is not just a game, it is their first love and priority.

Indian-American Golfer Megha Ganne Wins 2025 US Women's Amateur

Indian-American golfer Megha Ganne etched her name into history by clinching the 2025 US Women's Amateur title at Bandon Dunes, defeating Brooke Biermann 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final. The 21-year-old rising senior, playing in her seventh US Women's Amateur, overcame the 2025 Michigan State graduate with a composed and clinical performance.

India Finishes with 27 Medals in Asia U19 & U22 Boxing Championships 2025

With a gold in the women's 80+ kg category, Ritika concluded team India's campaign at the Asian U19 & U22 Boxing Championships 2025 with a total of 27 medals, across both the age groups in Bangkok.
The U19 boxers secured a total of 14 medals, including three gold, seven silver and four bronze medals. They had the best medal count, but finished second behind Uzbekistan due to the latter having seven gold medals.
The U22 batch got one gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals.

New Zealand all-rounder Thamsyn Newton announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, after a 14-year career consisting of 10 ODIs and 15 T20Is.
Newton was a part of the squad in the 2016 ICC Women's T20 World Cup, where New Zealand women lost out on a final spot narrowly after being beaten by the eventual champions, West Indies women, by six runs in the semi-final.

India's Annu Rani Wins Gold at International Wiesław Maniak Memorial

India's Annu Rani, the reigning Asian Games champion, struck gold in the women's javelin throw at the International Wiesław Maniak Memorial in Poland, delivering a season-best performance of 62.59 metres. She secured the top spot ahead of competitors from Turkey and Australia.
Her winning distance places her among the top 15 women's javelin throwers in the world this season. Rani now has her sights set on achieving the 64m qualification standard for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month.

Greater Noida Hosts 4th Sub-Junior National Boxing Championships from August 7 to 13

The 4^th Sub-Junior Under-15 Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships is being held from August 7 to 13, 2025 in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Over 700 young boxers, including 400 boys and 300 girls aged between 13 and 14, are competing across 15 weight categories.

Global Chess League to be Hosted by India This Year

After two seasons abroad, this edition of the Global Chess League (GCL) will be hosted by India this year (2025), the league announced along with dates for the league. The organisers said that the GCL will be held from December 13 to 24 this year. The dates mean that the league will end very close to the start of the traditional year-ending FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championship, which is usually held over the Christmas and New Year window.
The first edition of the Global Chess League was hosted in Dubai while last year, the event was held in London.

Uttar Pradesh Pro Volleyball League Starts

The Uttar Pradesh Pro Volleyball League (UPPVL) began with a grand opening ceremony at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex, Greater Noida. The league has been founded by Shi Kulwant Baliyan and is being organised under the leadership of Prabal Pratap Singh Tomar, Organising Chairman. UPPVL aims to provide a powerful platform for the youth of Uttar Pradesh to gain recognition at national and international levels.
The following eight teams are participating: Ayodhya Super King, Gorakhpur Giants, Kashi Warriors, Lucknow Tigers, Mathura Yodhyas, Moradabad Bulls, Muzaffarnagar Lions and Noida Thunders.
A total of 25 matches will be played during the course of the league, culminating in the Grand Finale on August 21, 2025, where the champion team will be crowned.

Velammal Wins 2025 World Schools Team Championship

India's Velammal MHS School claimed the gold medal at the 2025 World Schools Team Championship in Alexandria, Virginia after winning all eight of their matches.
This latest title for a team representing India came as India's takeover of the sport is taking shape.
