  • England announced Jacob Bethell as their captain for their three-match T20I series against Ireland in Dublin next month. The 21-year-old all-rounder is hence the youngest ever captain England had across formats, a record that has stood for about 136 years.

Devika Sihag Clinches Women's Singles Crown at Malaysia International Challenge 2025

  • Indian shuttler Devika Sihag claimed the women's singles title at the Malaysia International Challenge 2025 badminton tournament in Ipoh.
  • Devika who was also part of India's bronze medal-winning team at the World University Games 2025 in Germany, got the better of compatriot and fifth seed Isharani Baruah 15-7, 15-12 in a final that lasted just 25 minutes.
  • This tournament was played under the BWF's experimental 3x15 scoring system, where matches are decided in best-of-three games of 15 points each, instead of the traditional 21-point format.

Anahat Singh Finishes Runner-up at NSW Squash Bega Open

  • Second seed Habiba Hani of Egypt beat top seed Anahat Singh in the final of the $27,500 Bega Open PSA women's squash tournament in Australia.
  • Habiba led 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 10-4 when Anahat retired, unable to sustain her challenge owing to an ankle injury.

Abhinav Bindra Appointed IOC Mental Health Ambassador for Athletes

  • Olympic gold medalist shooter and former athlete Abhinav Bindra was named one of nine International Olympic Committee (IOC) Mental Health Ambassadors, the IOC announced.
  • Mental Health Ambassadors like Abhinav Bindra are tasked with breaking stigma, encouraging open conversation about mental health and promoting well-being within sport and beyond.
  • Other ambassadors include British pole vaulter Holly Bradshaw, Hong Kong China's Camille Cheng, Brazilian Bruno Fratus, and American figure skater Gracie Gold.
  • Ivorian track and field star Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith, Papua New Guinea's swimming legend Ryan Pini, South African sprinter Akani Simbine and Afghan cyclist Masomah Ali Zada.

Yuvraj Sandhu Clinches Mysuru Open 2025 Title

  • Yuvraj Sandhu stamped his authority at the Mysuru Open 2025 by registering a thumping eight-shot win and clinched his third title of the season that also helped him consolidate his lead in the PGTI Order of Merit, according to a release from Mysuru Open.
  • Sandhu picked up the winner's cheque worth INR 15 lakh that took his season's earnings to INR 73,67,200, giving him a substantial lead of over INR 12 lakh in the PGTI Order of Merit. The champion took home the elegant new trophy depicting the majestic Mysore Palace, Mysuru's biggest landmark.

Chennai Grand Masters 2025

  • Grand Master (GM) M. Pranesh won the Challengers title at the Chennai Grand Masters 2025, earning the opportunity to compete in the Masters section next year, despite a final-round setback against International Master (IM) Harshavardhan GB.
  • In the Masters, GM Vincent Keymer wrapped up an already-secured crown in style, defeating GM Ray Robson with Black to finish a commanding tournament run. Arjun Erigaisi was among three players sharing second place, joining GM Karthikeyan Murali and GM Anish Giri on the podium.
  • Now in its third edition, the Chennai Grand Masters has cemented its status as India's premier classical chess tournament.

World Padel League Third Edition

  • The World Padel League Season 3 took place from August 12-16, 2025 at NESCO Centre, Mumbai, in its latest edition; the tournament featured 36 top international players.
  • This season's line-up included the following six teams: Vedanta Leopards (backed by the Vedanta group), Khan Tigers (owned by actor-producer Sohail Khan), Panorama Panthers (led by Panorama Productions), Game Changers Lions (helmed by global sports & entertainment company Game Changers FZCO), defending champions SG Pipers Cheetahs (fronted by SG Sports & Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.), and inaugural champions Vernost Jaguars (owned by technology firm Vernost).

Gulveer Singh Smashes 3000m National Record

  • At the Gyulai Istvan Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix 2025 event in Budapest, Gulveer Singh broke the Indian national record in the men's 3000m race.
  • Competing in the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet at the National Athletics Centre, the Indian athlete finished fifth with a time of seven minutes and 34.49 seconds (7:34.49).
  • Kenya's Mathew Kipsang won the race in 7:33.23, with Mexico's Eduardo Herrera (7:33.58) and Uganda's World Championships 5000m bronze medallist Oscar Chelimo (7:33.93) completing the top three.

Rohith Krishna S India's 89th Grandmaster

  • Rohith Krishna S became India's 89th Grandmaster after he made his final GM norm at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan where he scored 6/9 and also surpassed 2500 Elo ratings mark. To grab the honour, he defeated International Master Artur Davtyan in the final round. The youngster is coached by K. Visweswaran.
  • Grandmaster is the highest title or ranking that a chess player can achieve. It is awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE, from its French acronym Fédération Internationale des Échecs), the global governing body headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Haryana Boys and Girls Sweep Team Titles at 4th Sub Junior National Boxing Championships

  • Haryana's young boxing brigade delivered a stunning all-round performance at the 4th Sub Junior (U-15) Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships, clinching the overall team titles in both categories.
  • In the Boys category, Haryana secured 4 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze medals and claimed the team crown, while Services followed closely with 5 gold, 4 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Uttar Pradesh rounded off the podium with 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.
  • The Girls team mirrored this success, producing champions in multiple divisions, including Garima (35-37kg), Princi (49-52kg), Sunaina (58-61kg), Jivika (61-64kg) and Radhika Sharma (67-70kg). Services finished second overall, with gold medalists like Navya (52-55kg) and Nishalini Muthukumar (43-46kg), while Maharashtra claimed third place with standout wins from Riya Shinde (30-33kg) and Ovi Adwant (46-49kg).

IOA Approves India's Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formally approved the country's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games during its Special General Meeting (SGM) in New Delhi.
  • India has already submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2030 CWG with Ahmedabad as the host city.
  • Canada has pulled out of the race, and India's chances of getting the 2030 CWG have brightened.
