GNDU Creates History in Sports World, Clinches MAKA Trophy for Record 25th Time

The esteemed Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (MAKA) for exceptional sporting achievements in the year 2022-23 was awarded to Guru Nanak Dev University by President of India, Droupadi Murmu.
This marked the University's record 25th win of the coveted trophy for outstanding all-round performance in sports.
Guru Nanak Dev University won the prestigious MAKA Trophy solidifying its position as India's top sports university.
The prestigious trophy, constituted in 1956-57, is awarded every year by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to universities after assessing various parameters, including the strength of sports programme, number of national/international athletes and sportspersons, their achievements and sports infrastructure.

Alexander Zverev-Led Germany Defeats Swiatek's Poland in United Cup

Germany beat top seeds Poland and clinched the United Cup after Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund won the deciding mixed doubles tie over Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek.
Despite the loss, Poland did not leave empty-handed. Iga Swiatek, having won all her singles ties and mixed doubles matches leading up to the final, was awarded the Most Valuable Player accolade.
The United Cup is an international hard court tennis competition featuring mixed-gender teams from 18 countries.

FIH and Viacom18 Ink Four-Year Media Rights Deal

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) sealed a significant media rights partnership with Viacom18, spanning the four-year period from 2023 to 2027. This exclusive agreement encompasses all FIH events, with the exception of the FIH Nations Cup.
This comprehensive media rights deal ensures that hockey enthusiasts across India have access to an extensive array of FIH events, enhancing the sport's visibility and popularity. The only exception to this coverage is the FIH Nations Cup, which falls outside the purview of the agreement.

Squash to Debut at Khelo India Youth Games

Squash will make its debut at the Youth Games with the Khelo India Youth Games 2023 in Tamil Nadu slated to be held in Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore – from January 19-31, 2024 and the state's Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin chaired a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday to take stock of the final preparations for the games.
This is the first time that the Khelo India Youth Games are being held in South India and will be played across four cities. Squash will make its debut in the Khelo India Youth Games 2023 Tamil Nadu, while state's traditional sport Silambam will be a demo sport.

Klaasen Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

South Africa batter Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect but confirmed that he will be available for the Proteas in the white-ball formats.
Klaasen, a prolific performer for South Africa in the limited-overs format, played four Tests over his career. He debuted against India in Ranchi in 2019, and last featured against West Indies in 2023. The 'keeper-batter scored 104 runs at an average of 13 from his four games. His highest score was 35 against Australia in Sydney.

Varun, Esha Seal Paris Olympics Berth in Shooting

Young Indian shooters Varun Tomar and Esha Singh secured two Olympic quota places for the country with gold medals in the men's and women's 10m Air Pistol events of the Asian Qualifiers in Jakarta.
The duo's qualification took the total number of Indian shooters bound for Paris to 15, equalling the highest-ever tally that was achieved in the Tokyo Games.

Coco Begins Year with Title

Coco Gauff battled past Elina Svitolina 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 in the Auckland Classic final and retained her title.
The Auckland top seed continued to build momentum in the new season by winning the tune-up for the Australian Open, losing only one set after a thorough test in the final by twice Melbourne Park quarterfinalist Svitolina.
Coco Gauff is an American professional tennis player. She has won seven WTA Tour singles titles.

IOA Appoints Raghuram Iyer as Chief Executive Officer

The Indian Olympic Association appointed Raghuram Iyer as the Chief Executive Officer.
The lack of a CEO was an issue which was flagged even by International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Thomas Bach when had visited Mumbai for the IOC Session.
Iyer's wealth of experience and proven track record in sports management and administration makes him an ideal candidate to lead the IOA in its mission to promote and develop Olympic sports in India.
Iyer had earlier served as CEO of IPL sides Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants.
