ISRO Plans a Rocket that can be Made in Three Days
In a development that will revolutionalise the satellite launch system in the country, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is developing a small launch vehicle that can be assembled in just three days as compared to 30-40 days for a normal-sized PSLV and can be built at a cost which will be just one-tenth the original manufacturing cost of a PSLV. The manufacturing cost of a launch vehicle is generally in the range of Rs 150 crore to Rs 500 crore across the world. Isro has started working on the idea of building this small rocket keeping in mind the emerging market of nano satellites.Till now, satellites of foreign customers are accommodated in launch vehicles only as secondary passengers. With Isro eyeing to capture the market of nano satellites, the small vehicle can be a boon for foreign satellite customers as the rocket can be readied in just three days on demand.
IIT- Roorkee Develops High- Speed Memory Device
A team at IIT Roorkee has developed a memory device which can read and write memory at a high speed while consuming low energy. The development of such a chip suggests a new leap of technology as currently the key limitation of memory-related technology was the two-bit ability. The applications of this chip can be found across domains such as signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and virtual reality among others. It can impact the speed at which memory-intensive tasks such as video viewing or playing mobile games are undertaken.
Apart from the fact that the device consumes low energy, the key advantage of this device over existing technology is its non-volatility which means it is capable of retaining data even when power is off. Additionally, the chip utilizes voltage instead of large electric current to switch the magnetic bits and write data into the memory which not only makes the process faster but also reduces the cost per bit.
