Solar System Just Like Ours Discovered

  • NASA's big Kepler discovery has revealed an eighth planet orbiting the star Kepler-90.
  • The discovery was made by applying artificial intelligence to data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope.
  • The planet Kepler-90i demonstrates for the first time that other stars can host planetary systems as populous as our own solar system.
  • Sitting around a Sun-like star 2,545 light years away in the constellation Draco, Kepler-90i – like Earth – is also the third rock from its sun.

Diamond Turned into Graphite Using X- Ray

Scientists have, for the first time, turned diamond into graphite using ultra-short flashes of an X-Ray laser. It is a decisive step forward in understanding the fundamental behaviour of solids when they absorb energetic radiation.

First-ever breathalyser test for drugs developed

Drug tests could soon be carried out in the same way as those for alcohol: with a simple breathalyser sample. Swedish scientists have developed a new technology that detects tiny quantities of drugs in a person’s breath. The team from the University of Gothenburg found they could successfully detect whether someone had taken methadone based solely on a breath sample.

Surface-to-Air Missile Akash Test-Fired

India successfully test-fired its supersonic surface-to-air missile Akash with indigenous radio frequency seeker from a test range in Odisha. The indigenous missile targeting a UAV ‘Banshee’ was fired from the launch complex-III of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur. The supersonic missile is the first surface-to-air missile with indigenous seeker to be test-fired and is being inducted into the army. Akash has a strike range of about 25 km and carries a 55 kg fragmentation warhead that is triggered by proximity fuse.

Voyager 1 Thrusters Fired up

NASA engineers have successfully fired up a set of “dominant” backup thrusters aboard Voyager 1, the farthest and fastest spacecraft, after 37 years. The only human-made object in interstellar space , Voyager 1 has been flying for 40 years. It relies on small devices called thrusters to orient itself so it can communicate with Earth.
