Gennady Padalka Sets Record for Longest Stay in Space

  • Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka has broken the record for the longest time spent in space with a total of 804 days as on July 2015.
  • Gennady beat the old record of 803 days, nine hours and 41 minutes set by fellow cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev (now retired) across six missions from 1998 to 2005.
  • Padalka is the current commander of the International Space Station which has been orbiting the Earth. When Padalka returns to Earth in September with fellow ISS crew members Mikhail Kornienko and Scott Kelly, he will have spent a total of 877 days, or roughly 2.5 years, in space.

A Glove to Translate Sign Language

  • Researchers have developed a glove that would translate text and sign languages to facilitate conversation between speech- and hearing-impaired people and those not conversant with sign language.
  • The prototype senses hand movements of the user and identifies them with the 26 letters of the international alphabet.
  • Words and phrases are transmitted by Bluetooth to a mobile device with a preloaded application that displays and reads the signs.

Five Supermassive Black Holes Discovered

  • Five supermassive black holes that were hidden by clouds of dust and gas have been discovered by astronomers who suggest that millions of concealed monster black holes exist in the universe.
  • The five black holes are much brighter and more active than previously thought as they rapidly feasted on surrounding material and emitted large amounts of radiation.
  • Such observations were not possible before NuSTAR, which was launched in 2012 and is able to detect much higher energy x-rays than previous satellite observatories.

Pluto-bound Spacecraft Loses Contact

  • With nine days left for Nasa's New Horizons' historic encounter with Pluto, the nearly 700-million dollar mission faced a major problem resulting in the stopping of the collection of science data temporarily by the spacecraft.
  • The New Horizons' mission control centre team lost contact with the spacecraft for about 90 minutes. Communication was restored via Nasa's Deep Space Network antennas.

Methane on Pluto Confirmed

  • NASA's New Horizon probe, set for a Pluto flyby on July 14, has confirmed that there is frozen methane on Pluto's surface.
  • Astronomers first observed Methane on Pluto in 1976.
  • On Pluto, methane may be primordial, inherited from the solar nebula from which the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.

New Rice Flour May Help Get Rid of Global Food Poverty

  • Researchers have developed a new, high-quality rice flour which they claim can help alleviate global food poverty.
  • By studying and modifying proteins in the rice flour family, the researchers have produced dough and bread of superior quality than that obtained from 'normal' rice flour.
  • This rice flour serves not only as an alternative to wheat flour for those with wheat intolerance, but could also help to overcome the global food problem in the future.
