Sri Lankan Appoints Task Force for 'One Country, One Law'

  • Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed a 13-member task force, headed by a hardline Buddhist monk known for his anti-Muslim stance, for the establishment of the One Country, One Law' concept in the island nation and to prepare a draft Act.
  • The One Country, One Law' was an election slogan of Rajapaksa in 2019 when he was elected president with an overwhelming support from the country's Buddhist majority.
  • The task force, appointed by President Rajapaksa through a special gazette for the establishment of the One Country, One Law' concept, is headed by Galagodaaththe Gnanasara, the hardline Buddhist monk who became a symbol of anti-Muslim hatred in the country.

Wipro Appoints Kimberly Watson as Country Head and MD for Canada

  • Wipro announced the appointment of Kimberly Watson as Country Head and Managing Director for Canada.
  • Watson would focus on Wipro's vision for business growth, localization, brand building and significant transformational and modernization engagements with clients in key sectors.
  • Watson is a veteran who has been in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field for over 30 years in various leadership roles including development, sales, engineering, delivery, software, managed services, and outsourcing. In her most recent role, Watson was Vice President and General Manager for the Federal Market at IBM Canada. She has also held several leadership positions at IBM and Bell Canada.

Swiss Re to Invest Rs. 920 crore for Stake in Paytm's General Insurance Biz

  • Financial services firm Paytm's associate, Paytm Insuretech Private Limited (PIT), entered into a strategic partnership with Swiss Re, one of the world's leading providers of reinsurance, insurance and other forms of insurance-based risk transfer.
  • Swiss Re will invest about Rs. 920 crore in PIT for an aggregate stake of 23 per cent on a fully diluted basis.
  • Paytm Insuretech plans to leverage Paytm's customer base and merchant ecosystem to develop innovative insurance products and solutions.

SBI General Insurance Collaborates with Google Pay to Offer Health Insurance

  • SBI General Insurance announced its technological collaboration with Google Pay that will enable users to buy SBI General's health insurance on the Google Pay app.
  • This is in line with SBI General's vision to consistently expand its distribution of general insurance solutions through digital channels. The collaboration also marks Google Pay's first such alliance with an insurer in the country and will make health insurance available to customers.
  • Users will be able to buy both individual and family plans under Arogya Sanjeevani policy through Google Pay Spot.

Proba-1 Completes 20 Years

  • ESA's Proba-1 mini satellite was launched two decades ago, in October 2021, into orbit. It has completed 20 years.
  • The mini satellite remains fully operational for 20 years.
  • It is the oldest serving Earth observing mission of the agency.
  • Proba-1 is roughly the size of a hotel fridge. It hosts two Earth-observing instruments together with several technological firsts.
  • Probe 1 is the first in ESA's (European Space Agency's) family of 'Project for On-Board Autonomy' missions.
  • It started life as a technology demonstration satellite and later became an Earth observation mission.
  • It is highly automated and introduced several mainstream technologies to space, such as, lithium-ion batteries, use of star trackers for gyro-free attitude control and gallium arsenide solar panel as well as ESA-developed ERC-32 microprocessors that run its flight computers.
  • Proba-1 mission carry several low-cost, commercial-off-the-shelf systems and components. It is sometimes described as 'NewSpace before NewSpace'. This mission continues to deliver imagery to scientists across the world. It also provides valuable data on longevity of space systems and components.
  • European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising of 22 member states. It is dedicated for the exploration of space. ESA was established in 1975. It is headquartered in Paris.

Viktor Axelsen and Akane Yamaguchi Wins Denmark Open 2021

  • Tokyo Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen won the Denmark Open after coming back from one game down to beat No.1 seed Kento Momota on Sunday at Odense, Denmark.
  • The second seeded local star spent one hour and 33 minutes on court to win against the two times former winner from Japan in three games, 20-22, 21-18, 21-12.
  • Japan is the biggest winner of the event as it clinched the titles of women's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles.

Govt Appoints K. V. Kamath as Chairperson of Newly Set up DFI

  • The government appointed veteran banker K. V. Kamath as the chairperson of the newly set up government-owned development finance institution (DFI) National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development.
  • The appointment has been done in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The government will also appoint its two nominees this week, and other board members would be appointed by the interim board of the DFI.
  • The DFI would have a chairman, two government nominees, and four whole-time directors. Wholetime directors will include a chief executive officer (CEO) and three other members.
  • Kamath was the first president of the New Development Bank (NDB), and headed the multilateral institution until last year.

India-Kyrgyzstan Hold First Strategic Dialogue

  • India and Kyrgyzstan held their first strategic dialogue in New Delhi and agreed to enhance security and defence cooperation to address common threats and challenges faced by both countries arising out of the situation in Afghanistan.
  • The Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, Lieutenant General Marat Imankulov, met National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval in New Delhi for the first India-Kyrgyzstan strategic dialogue.
  • The two sides held discussions on threats and challenges faced by both countries as well as the regional security environment with special reference to Afghanistan.
  • The two sides welcomed the similarity of views on these matters, and agreed upon steps to enhance bilateral security cooperation between the relevant bodies, including in the fields of counter-terrorism, combating radicalisation, narcotics control and defence cooperation.

India's First Radio over Internet Protocol System Inaugurated in Kolkata

  • The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SPM) in Kolkata became the first Major Indian Port to get a Radio over Internet Protocol (ROIP) System. The ROIP was inaugurated by Vinit Kumar, Chairman of SPM. SMP, Kolkata has been constantly maintaining its pivotal position in Indian Major Ports for the past 152 years.
  • ROIP system is a long-range marine communication solution, to aid especially during storms and inclement weather. Using the ROIP mode of communication, the vessels at Sandheads can be directly communicated via Radio, from Kolkata. The solution shall cover the entire Hugli River Estuary from Kolkata to Sandheads, and will have base stations at 4 Locations: Kolkata, Hugli point, Haldia and Sagar Pilot Station.

India Successfully Test-fires Agni-5 Missile Having Range of 5,000 km

  • In a major boost to its military might, India successfully test-fired surface-to-surface ballistic missile Agni-5 that can strike targets at ranges up to 5,000 km with a very high degree of accuracy.
  • The test-firing was carried from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.
  • The successful test of Agni-5 is in line with India's stated policy to have credible minimum deterrence that underpins the commitment to 'No First Use'.
  • The successful test-firing of the missile came in the midst of a lingering border standoff with China in eastern Ladakh.

  • National Tribal Dance Festival was held in Raipur in October 22021.

  • First edition of the National Tribal Dance Festival was organised in the year 2019. It witnessed the participation of tribal communities from 25 states of India along with six guest countries.

Tsitsi Dangarembga Receives Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2021

  • The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2021 was awarded to the Zimbabwean author and a filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga for a "new Enlightenment", a work on violence in her country and all over the world by Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, an association of German book publishers and booksellers.
  • Dangarembga is the first black woman to win the German Peace Prize. She has won the PEN Pinter prize 2021. Her debut novel, Nervous conditions were the first to be published in English by black women from Zimbabwe.
  • German Peace Prize is awarded by Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, Germany.
  • Prize money: 25,000 euros.

  • The procedures and protocols of Adventure Tourism Safety and Security Regulations for according registration for operators were drawn up by Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS), which functions under the Department of Tourism.

The panel, led by former KATPS Chief Executive Officer Manesh Bhaskar, had prepared a consolidated 'Adventure Tourism Safety and Security Regulations' by taking into account the currently popular 31 adventure tourism activities in the state.

2,000-Year-Old Amethyst Seal Found in Israel

  • An amethyst gemstone seal from the Second Temple period has a unique engraving: a bird and a branch with five fruits, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).
  • The 2,000-year-old seal was discovered in the bedrock foundations of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel.
  • The tiny artifact has a hole for the attachment of a metal wire enabling it to be worn as a ring.
  • Seals were used to sign documents and could also be fashionable items serving as jewelry.
  • The amethyst seal is approximately 1 cm (0.4 inches) long and 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) wide.
