U.S. Allies Step up Pressure on Iran to Return to Nuclear Negotiations

  • The United States and its closest partners are stepping up pressure on Iran to return to stalled nuclear negotiations, warning that it will face greater international isolation, new economic penalties and possibly military action if it forges ahead with its atomic programme.
  • In a series of high-level diplomatic meetings in Washington, U.S., European, Israeli and Arab officials agreed on the need to make clear to Iran that its continued resistance to rejoining the talks in Vienna will not be ignored or left unpunished.

RBI Clears Re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as MD of Axis Bank

  • The Reserve Bank approved re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as managing director of private sector Axis Bank for a period of three years.
  • The extended three-year term would be effective from January 1, 2022.
  • The board of the bank had in April 2021 approved the extension of his tenure for further period of three years subject to regulatory clearance.

UCO Bank Chief A. K. Goel is New IBA Chairman

  • A. K. Goel, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO), UCO Bank is new chairman of banking industry lobby group Indian Banks. Association for 2021-22. He succeeded Rajkiran Rai G, MD & CEO, Union Bank of India.
  • The Managing Committee of IBA at its meeting held in October 2021 elected Goel as chairman of the association.

IIFL Finance First BNFC to launch instant business loan on WhatsApp

  • IIFL Finance launched instant business loan on WhatsApp, whereby users of the latter will be able to avail loan up to Rs. 10 lakh with minimum documentation and get approval in five minutes.
  • The retail-focussed non-banking finance company (NBFC), in a statement, claimed that it has become the first NBFC in the country to launch instant business loan on WhatsApp.
  • WhatsApp's 45 crore-plus users across India can avail a 24x7 loan facility to get a loan in under ten minutes from IIFL Finance.

India 6th most Affected Country by Ransomware, Says Google

  • A Google report that analysed more than 80 million ransomware samples submitted over the last year and a half revealed that India is at the sixth place in the list of 140 countries most affected by ransomware.
  • Israel was far and away an outlier, with the highest number of submissions and nearly a 600 per cent increase in the number of submissions compared to its baseline.
  • It was followed by South Korea, Vietnam, China, Singapore, India, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Iran, and the UK as the most affected top 10 territories, based on the number of submissions to VirusTotal.
  • Launched in June 2004, VirusTotal was acquired by Google in September 2012. The company's ownership switched in January 2018 to Chronicle Security, a cybersecurity company which is part of Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Ireland's Amy Hunter Becomes Youngest Batter to hit ODI Hundred

  • Ireland's Amy Hunter hit 121 not out on her 16th birthday against Zimbabwe, making her the youngest batter to score an ODI century in either men's or women's cricket. The Belfast batter – who was playing in only her fourth ODI – broke the record previously held by India's Mithali Raj, scorer of a century against Ireland in 1999 when she was 16 years 205 days.

Chennai Super Kings Wins Fourth IPL Title

  • Chennai Super Kings clinched their fourth Indian Premier League title after beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the summit clash at Dubai International Stadium.
  • Faf du Plessis hit a magnificent 86 off 59 balls, laced with seven fours and three sixes, to help CSK post 192 for 3 after they were invited to bat.
  • Chasing an imposing target of 193, KKR could manage 165 for 9 in their 20 overs with Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer hitting 51 and 50, respectively.

Bhutan, China Sign MoU on Boundary Issue, India Wary

  • India has noted the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Bhutan and China on "three-step roadmap for expediting the boundary negotiations" which may also include discussions on Doklam.
  • During an expert group meeting in Kunming in April 2021, Bhutan and China had agreed on the "three-step roadmap" to help expedite the ongoing boundary negotiations.
  • China-Bhutan boundary talks traditionally focus on two areas. One is two valleys — Pasamlung and Jakarlung — and the other is Doklam, along the trijunction with India.

Patna, Allahabad, Bombay HCs Get Seven New Judges

  • The Centre notified the appointment of seven judges to the High Courts of Patna, Allahabad and Bombay.
  • Advocates Sandeep Kumar, Purnendu Singh, Satyavrat Verma and Rajesh Kumar Verma were appointed to the Patna High Court; judicial officer Om Prakash Tripathi to the Allahabad High Court; and judicial officers Anil Laxman Pansare and Sandipkumar Chandrabhan to the Bombay High Court.
  • This is the fifth set of appointments notified by the government following the recent recommendations made by the Supreme Court collegium to fill judicial vacancies in various HCs, most of which have been functioning with fewer number of judges compared with their sanctioned strength.

Japan Launches Second Taigei-class Submarine, 'Hakugei'

  • Japan launched the second of a new class of diesel-electric submarines exactly one year to the day that the lead boat of the lithium-ion powered series took to the water.
  • The new submarine, named the 'Hakugei', or 'White Whale', was launched at Kawasaki Heavy Industries shipyard in the city of Kobe. The submarine will now undergo final construction and sea trials before commissioning into the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force or JMSDF, which is planned for March 2023.

Yogendra Mohan Gupta, Chairman of the Jagran Group, Passes Away

  • Yogendra Mohan Gupta, chairman and patron of Jagran Group of Publications, passed away in Kanpur after prolonged illness. He was 83.
  • Born on December 14, 1937, Gupta also edited 'Kanchan Prabha' magazine. He is also credited with setting up Lakshmidevi Lalit Kala Akademi in Kanpur.

World Food Day

  • World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16. The day not only makes us realise how privileged we are to gorge on the delicacies of the world but also raises awareness about the not-so-privileged people. The day acknowledges the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation and also highlights the section across the globe that starves from extreme hunger. The Food and Agriculture Association (FAO) was coined on October 16, 1945, by the United Nations. The year, 2021 marked the 76th anniversary of this historic day.

James Sangma wins 2021 PETA Award

  • The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named Meghalaya Environment and Forest Minister James Sangma as the winner of the Progressive Business Concept Award for promoting vegan pineapple leather.
  • Apart from encouraging farmers in the State to go for pineapple leather production, Mr. Sangma also had plans to open a climate change museum and introduce climate change in the school curricula.
  • According to the International Society for Horticultural Science, Meghalaya contributed to about 8% of the total pineapple produced in India.

  • The idea came from a cuddly toy pig that has been a favourite of her son since he was a baby, but which he kept hiding and losing.

400 Rock-cut Chamber Tombs, Filled with Wall Paintings and Treasures, Discovered in Turkey

  • Archaeologists in Turkey have discovered 400 rock-cut chamber tombs that date to 1,800 years ago and make up part of one of the largest rock-cut chamber tomb necropolises in the world.
  • The team found the tombs in the ancient city of Blaundos, located about 110 miles east of the Aegean Sea in what is now Turkey. The city was founded during the time of Alexander the Great and existed through the Roman and Byzantine periods.
  • The tombs are filled with sarcophagi, many of which contain multiple deceased individuals — a clue that families used these tombs for burials over many generations.
