Encourage India and China to Resolve Border Row but will not Directly Interfere: Russia

  • Russia said that it encourages India and China to resolve Line of Actual Control (LAC) row but will not directly "interfere". Border tensions have increased between the two neighbouring countries especially after the Galwan incident of June in which India lost 20 of its soldiers.
  • Roman Babushkin, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Russian embassy in Delhi said, "Directly we are not recommending or advising do so or not do something..it up to both countries to decide. What we are doing is not interference, it creating some sort of positive atmosphere."

Aung San Suu Kyi Vows Victory in Election as Campaign Starts

  • Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi launched her re-election bid ahead of polls set for November, vowing victory at a scaled-down ceremony in the capital after her original plans were scuppered by a surge in coronavirus cases.
  • The election is set to serve as a test of the country's first democratic government in half a century and is seen by analysts as an important test of Myanmar`s transition away from direct military rule as it grapples with crises on multiple fronts.
  • Suu Kyi, who rules as state counselor, had planned to launch her campaign in the commercial capital of Yangon but cancelled the trip.
  • The NLD, which won a landslide at 2015 polls that ended half-a-century of military and military-backed rule, is expected to win again though by a lesser margin.
  • The party remains overwhelmingly popular despite criticism over its failure to curb the power of the army or end escalating ethnic conflicts. It has also faced international condemnation over a 2017 military crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority.

J&K Glaciers Melting at Significant Rate

  • Glaciers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are melting at a significant rate, according to a first-of-its-kind study which used satellite data to find that over 1,200 glaciers in the Himalayan region saw an annual reduction in mass of 35 centimetres (cm) on average between 2000 and 2012.
  • The study was carried over the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh region, including areas across the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC), and in all 12,243 glaciers were studied for thickness and mass changes.
  • In general, it was observed that the glaciers in the Pir Panjal Range are melting at the higher rate, more than one metre per year, while as the glaciers in the Karakoram Range are melting relatively at a slower rate, around 10 cm per year.
  • Some glaciers are even advancing or stable in the Karakoram Range. In other mountain ranges like the Greater Himalayan Range, Zanaskar Range, Shamabari Range, Leh Ranges, the glaciers are undoubtedly melting but the rate of melting is variable.
  • They employed this data to determine the glacier thickness changes over the entire Upper Indus Basin, comprising of over 12,000 glaciers.

Thwaites: 'Doomsday Glacier' Vulnerability Seen in New Maps

  • Scientists have identified Thwaites Glacier's Achilles heel.
  • This Antarctic colossus is melting at a rapid rate, dumping billions of tonnes of ice in the ocean every year and pushing up global sea-levels.
  • Now, a UK-US team surveyed the deep seafloor channels in front of the glacier that almost certainly provide the access for warm water to infiltrate and attack Thwaites' underside.
  • These channels had not been mapped before in this kind of detail, and what has been discovered is that they are actually much bigger than anyone thought - up to 600 m deep.
  • "And because they are so deep, and so wide - this allows a lot more water to get at, and melt, Thwaites' floating front as well as its ice that rests on the seabed.

Top Oil and Gas PSUs Join ISA's Climate Action Coalition

  • The country's five large state-owned oil and gas companies will join International Solar Alliance's Coalition for Sustainable Climate Action as corporate partners and will contribute to ISA's corpus fund.
  • The five public sector undertakings that will join the ISA coalition are Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) and Gail (India).
  • ISA is an alliance of sunshine rich countries set up by India and France on the sidelines of the Paris meeting on climate change in November 2015.
  • Oil and gas companies in India will work closely with ISA to explore opportunities for implementation of solar based projects within India as well in other countries, particularly other developing countries where ISA is focusing for faster development of solar energy infrastructure.

Tomar Launches National Bamboo Mission Logo

  • Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar released a logo for the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) while inaugurating 22 bamboo clusters in nine states.
  • These clusters are in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.
  • Tomar said that the country is now gearing up to increase the export of bamboo products.
  • The import policy has also been modified to ensure progress of the bamboo industry in the country.
  • The winner of the logo contest, Sai Ram Goudi Edigi of Telengana was selected from 2,033 entries received on MyGov platform from across the country. The logo portrays a bamboo palm in the centre of a circle composed of half a wheel, representing industry, and half of farmers, depicting the objectives of NBM. The logo's green and yellow colour symbolises bamboo, which is often termed "green gold".

Bank of India Launches Signature Visa Debit Card

  • Bank of India (BoI) launched "Signature Visa Debit Card" for the affluent/high net worth individuals maintaining an average quarterly balance of Rs. 10 lakhs and above.
  • As per the bank, this international contactless debit card will be available in metal and plastic variants.
  • This card will have a spending limit of up to Rs. 5 lakhs on POS & e-commerce and Rs. 1 lakh on ATM.
  • Other features include complimentary lounge access (2 per quarter) and offers on travel, retail, dining, lifestyle, entertainment, luxury hotels, reward points for online usage etc. It will also provide Insurance against fraudulent transactions.
  • On the occasion of the Bank's 115th Foundation Day, MD and CEO A. K. Das virtually inaugurated new buildings of Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) at Barabanki, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) and Giridih (Jharkhand).

Ronaldo Second Male Player to Score 100 International Goals

  • Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo became the second male footballer and the first from Europe to score 100 international goals. The 35-year-old five-time Ballon d'Or winner achieved the feat in his 165th international match. Ronaldo scored his 100th goal after he netted a free-kick in the 45th minute against Sweden in UEFA Nations League. Ronaldo started his international career in 2003.
  • Iranian striker Ali Daei is the only other footballer in the world to achieve this feat. Daei scored his 100th goal for Iran in his 165th match. It may be recalled that Ronaldo last scored an international goal in November 2019 against Luxembourg.

India and Angola Hold 1st Joint Commission Meet

  • India and Angola held the first Joint Commission Meeting during which the two sides agreed to diversify their trade relationship and discussed cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, defence, agriculture, food processing, digitisation and telecom.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Angola counterpart Tete Antonio.
  • In the 1st India-Angola Joint Commission Meeting with FM Tete Antonio, comprehensive review of bilateral issues was done. Discussed cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, defence, agriculture, food processing, digitisation and telecom.

Modi Inaugurates Patrika Gate in Jaipur

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Patrika Gate in Jaipur through video conference. PM also released the Samvad Upanishad and Akshar yatra books written by the Patrika Group Chairman Shri Gulab Kothari.
  • The Prime Minister said that the Gate reflects the culture of Rajasthan and shall turn into a major domestic and international tourist attraction.
  • Referring to the two books, the Prime Minister said that they are a true representation of Indian culture and philosophy and that authors play a great role in educating the society.
  • He lauded the Patrika Group for its efforts in the preservation of Indian culture, Indian civilisation, values.
  • The Prime Minister lauded the founder of Patrika Group, Karpoor Chandra Kulish's contribution to journalism and the way the latter tried to spread the knowledge of Vedas in the society.
  • The PM congratulated the Patrika group for starting the International Journalism Award in the honour of Karpoor Chandra Kulish.

BJP Opposes Telangana Government's Move to Scrap VRO System

  • As the Telangana Cabinet approved the Revenue Bill 2020, the state unit of the BJP has termed the scrapping of the Village Revenue Officer system as a hasty step that is against the fundamental rights of the VROs.
  • BJP has called for an all-party meeting to discuss the issue before discussing the Bill in the House.
  • It may be recalled that Telangana Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar through an order earlier this month had stopped all the registration processes in the state and had directed the VROs to deposit all records to the respective District Collectors.

For First Time, ITBP Deploys Female Doctors at Forward Locations in Ladakh

  • For the first time, the Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) has sent female doctors to forward operating locations in Ladakh.
  • From sending troops from Leh to taking care of them at the forward locations, the ITBP female doctors have been given all kinds of charge.
  • Considering the tensed situation at the border, ITBP has changed its standard operating procedure (SOP), which did not allow any female officer to be deployed at such locations.
  • According to the ITBP top officials in Leh, female officers are now deployed at the border area to take care of troops along with other para-medics.
  • Importantly, these females doctors have been tasked to supervise the medical requirements of troops. They have been deployed in different strategic locations with other paramedics to assist them. That is not all, pharmacists and nursing assistants have been deployed in massive numbers to deal with any situation and sufficient supply have been sending consistently as per the requirement.
  • The base in Leh, where troops are reaching from parts of the country, have to go through from a strict medical check-up and have to have a fitness certificate. Here also, a female officer has been given charge.

Renowned Astronomer Govind Swarup Passes Away

  • Globally acclaimed scientist Govind Swarup, one of the pioneers in radio-astronomy, passed away.
  • Born in 1929, Swarup was one of the pioneers of radio astronomy in India.
  • Swarup obtained his M.Sc from Allahabad University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from Standford University in the USA in 1961.
  • He returned to India in 1963 and joined the TIFR at the invitation of Homi Bhaba.
  • Swarup was a fellow of many distinguished academics, including Fellowship of the Royal Society.
  • He received several distinctions throughout his career, including Padma Shri, the Bhatnagar Award, and the Grote Reber medal.

First World Solar Technology Summit

  • Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the first edition of the World Solar Technology Summit (WSTS) of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) with focus on new Technologies and Innovations in the field of Solar Power.
  • The World Solar Technology Summit (WSTS) was organised by ISA and FICCI
  • More than 26,000 participants from 149 countries joined the virtual Summit.
  • The Summit aimed at accelerating affordable and sustainable clean green energy by showcasing and deliberating on innovative state of the art next generation technologies in solar power.
  • WSTS assumes importance as its will enable:
  • India aims to achieve its ambitious target of having 100 GW of solar energy by 2022.
  • ISA to achieve its aim of creating a World Solar Bank with authorised capital of $15 billion to fund projects

Ageing Nepal Bags UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize

  • Ageing Nepal, the organisation working for the well being and rights of the senior citizens in Nepal, has received the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize.
  • The prize carries a purse of USD 20,000.
  • Ageing Nepal was awarded the prize for our work on Education for senior citizens as their rights. We have been running Basic Literacy Class for senior citizens since 2016.
  • Established in 1989 with the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea, the prize is presented to two organisations annually.

Don't Make NLSIU 'Island of Exclusion': Ex-VC to SC

  • Former Vice-Chancellor of National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore Prof. R. Venkat moved the Supreme Court against the university's decision to walk out of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) and to go for a separate entrance test for admission to law courses.
  • In his petition, Prof Rao said that the decision to go for a separate National Law Aptitude Test (NLAT) will make NLSIU an "island of exclusion" from an "island of excellence".
  • Terming the decision to conduct a separate test as "whimsical and baseless", the petition contended that the present NLSIU Vice-Chancellor did not have the requisite consent from the academic council for it.
  • Unlike general universities that admit only those having already completed a three-year BA, BSc. or BCom Course, admission to NLUs is open to candidates passing their Class 12 examination, provided they clear CLAT, which has a success rate of less than 5 per cent.

School Reopening: Normal Classes to Resume

  • Schools in the country were closed since March 2020 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, but steps are now being taken by a few states to reopen the schools in the wake of 'Unlock 4' guidelines announced by the Centre. Notably, some states have decided to open schools from September 21, but only for classes 9 to 12.
  • Last month, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had issued guidelines stating that schools and colleges will remain shut till September end, but they can call in 50% of their teachers for facilitating online teaching. Accordingly, students of classes 9 to 12 were allowed to visit schools on a 'voluntary basis' to clear their doubts.
  • In Haryana, the Manohar Lal Khattar government decided to start classes for students of Classes 10 to 12 in two state-run schools. In Bihar, an order was issued by Patna's District Magistrate Kumar Ravi allowing educational institutions to resume classes. Schools in Andhra Pradesh are set to resume normal classes. The above mentioned will reopen schools for classes 9 to 12.

NSDC Partners with LinkedIn to Offer Free Future-ready Online Courses to Indians

  • Indians will be able to access free resources on LinkedIn to learn future-ready skills under the new collaboration between the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and LinkedIn. Under the partnership, 10 free LinkedIn Learning paths which consist of 140 courses will be available for free at eSkill India digital platform until March 31, 2021. eSkill India is NSDC's digital skilling initiative which has digital learning resources in regional languages.
  • Each learning path includes a series of video content designed to help job-seekers develop core digital skills needed for an in-demand tech role. These courses will cover a broad range of skills from entry-level digital literacy to advanced product-based skills. LinkedIn will also offer three soft skills via the eSkill India portal.
