Tokyo Olympic Torch Relay to Start its Journey on March 25

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the Olympic Torch Relay will start its journey on March 25, 2021, from the J-Village National Training Centre in Fukushima Prefecture, and then traverse all 47 prefectures across Japan over a period of 121 days.
  • In principle, the route and the schedule of the Relay will remain as originally planned. As 2021 will mark the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay will aim to showcase the recovery of the areas worst affected by the disaster, in line with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay concept of "Hope Lights Our Way".
  • The torch will reach Tokyo on July 9 in time for the flame to light the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium at the Opening Ceremony of the Games on July 23.

Rafael Nadal Unhappy with French Open choice of Wilson Balls for 2020 Edition

  • French Open organisers have had enough problems dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the dwindling number of fans on site and inclement weather but they faced another controversy -- criticism of the choice of ball for this year`s edition.
  • Roland Garros has switched to Wilson balls for the 2020 tournament after using Babolat for many years and 12-times champion Rafa Nadal was not impressed.
  • As per Nadal, you have to take care because with these conditions you can`t practise that much because the ball is super heavy.

French Open to Allow Just 1,000 People a Day at Roland Garros

  • A maximum of only 1,000 people will be allowed each day at Roland Garros after the French government insisted on tougher restrictions to counter the resurgence of the coronavirus.
  • Organisers of the French Open, which gets underway four months later than planned in Paris, had hoped for a maximum of 5,000.
  • That figure had already been reduced from 20,000 and then 11,500.
  • The decision by the French government will be a huge blow to Roland Garros which last year attracted on average around 37,000 fans a day.
  • French Prime Minister Jean Castex insisted that the Grand Slam tournament must be subject to the same restrictions imposed Thursday on sports events taking place in designated 'red zones' where the coronavirus is showing signs of resurgence.
