Former Teacher Starts Mobile Library 'Hope on Wheels'

  • As the world shut its doors to the outside world followed by the emergence of a deadly virus called Covid-19, the schools were also deserted.
  • Suddenly, technology became the sole medium of imparting education. Teachers and students started to get used to spending hours in front of computers. The Internet became a very essential part of all.
  • Sandeep Kumar Badsra, a former teacher from Mohali did think of those students who were losing out on education due to the unavailability of essentials that are needed to cope up with the new normal.
  • Sandeep Badsra started an initiative of the mobile library in which he carrys books and other essential items for the children of slum so that they can continue their studies.
  • He provided books and other study material to the underprivileged students who could not afford the technology.
  • Sandeep Kumar Badsra also initiated a non-government organization called 'Open Eyes Foundation' and he named his mobile library initiative as the 'Hope on Wheels'.
  • He has equipped one side of the vehicle with a LED screen to be used to teach students and the other side of the vehicle has been made into a mobile library.

Can Ayurvedic Medicines Cure COVID-19, Clinical Trial Shows Surprising Results

  • In a significant development, an interim report on a clinical trial has shown that coronavirus COVID-19 patients undertaking natural treatment are resolving most symptoms earlier than those using allopathic medicines. The clinical trial was conducted at three hospitals.
  • The interim report said that combination treatment of an Ayurvedic remedy called 'Immunofree' by Corival Life Sciences, and Nutraceutical called 'Reginmune' by Biogetica have shown better results than the conventional medicines approved by the government for coronavirus treatment.
  • The interim report also added that tests such as C reactive protein, Procalcitonin, D Dimer and RT-PCR are also showing 20 to 60 per cent better improvement for the natural treatment when compared to conventional treatment of COVID-19 patients.
  • According to the report, over 85% of patients on the natural protocol tested negative for coronavirus on day 5 when compared to 60 per cent of patients undergoing conventional treatments. Notably, all patients tested negative when they were tested on the 10th day.

Mehr Chand Polytechnic Inks Pact with Australian Varsity

  • Mehr Chand Polytechnic inked a pact has signed a MoU with Edith Cowan University, Australia, for a period of three years for exchange of technical education.
  • The MoU has been signed by professor Daryoush Habibi, executive dean, school of engineering, Edith Cowan University, and Dr. Jagroop Singh, principal, Mehr Chand Polytechnic College, Jalandhar. Jagroop Singh said that under the agreement diploma passed students in any discipline could seek admission in Edith Cowan University through lateral entry directly in 2nd year. Moreover, the university would provide special scholarship to lateral entry students.
  • The university officials said that a special team would visit Mehr Chand Polytechnic College once or twice in a year.

IIM Calcutta 2nd in Asia in Financial Times Rankings

  • Indian Institute of Management Calcutta on Monday secured the second spot in Asia in the 'Financial Times Masters in Management Rankings 2020' for its flagship two-year MBA programme.
  • The institute ranked 21st globally in the FT rankings.
  • IIM Calcutta Director Anju Seth said that the FT Rankings demonstrate again that the institute's MBA programme is a powerful launching pad for its graduates to contribute to business and society in leadership positions.
  • Categories considered in the rankings include alumni career progress, school diversity, and international experience and research.
  • IIM Calcutta excelled in several individual criteria within these categories, including salary percentage increase and career progress of alumni since graduation.

Odisha To Hold Radio Classes For School Students

  • With schools remaining closed since March 17 due to COVID-19 pandemic, students from classes one to eight of government-run institutes in Odisha will be taught via radio from Monday.
  • The "Radio Pathsala" programme will be held every day from Monday to Friday between 10 am to 10:15 am from September 28.
  • Lessons to be conducted for two classes in each day will be aired through all radio stations in the state, he said. The audio programme will also be uploaded in the central government's DIKSHA online platform.
  • Students are also being imparted online classes through smart phones, the minister said. Earlier, the state government had decided to reduce the syllabus by 30 per cent for the 2020-21 academic year.

NPPA Caps Price of Liquid Medical Oxygen and Medical Oxygen Cylinders

  • To ensure availability of medical oxygen in the country at a reasonable price amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the national drug pricing regulator NPPA has capped the price of medical oxygen cylinders and liquid medical oxygen for six months, the government said on Saturday. The present situation of COVID-19 has resulted in increased demand of medical oxygen up to almost four times from 750 MT per day to around 2,800 MT per day.
  • The issue related to availability, including pricing of oxygen, has been under the continued consideration of Empowered Group 2, Government of India.
  • It recommended the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to consider capping the ex-factory price of liquid medical oxygen in order to ensure its supply to fillers at reasonable prices.
  • The Empowered Group 2 also requested NPPA to consider a cap for ex-factory price of oxygen in cylinders in order to ensure supply of oxygen cylinders from fillers at reasonable prices.
  • NPPA decided "to cap the ex-factory price of LMO at manufacturers end at Rs 15.22/cubic metre (CUM) exclusive of GST; and to further cap the ex-factory cost of medical oxygen cylinder at filler end at Rs 25.71/CUM exclusive of GST in suppression of the existing ceiling price of Rs 17.49/CUM, subject to transportation cost fixation at state level, for six months.

Jamia Hamdard Introduces MSc in Biomedical Sciences

  • Jamia Hamdard has launched full-time Master of Science (MSc) course in Biomedical Sciences in an effort to cater to the post COVID-19 healthcare needs. The two-year programme designed by the university's Institute of Molecular Medicine (JH-IMM) will focus on healthcare areas relate to combat future pandemics in the country. There are around 20 seats on offer. The candidates can apply through the website-' jamiahamdard.edu' till September 30,.
  • This programme is aimed to equip human resources in areas relevant to drug/ vaccine development, analyse medical data to investigate pathogens and chronic diseases and help develop programmes that can improve outcomes in population health of our country. Programme coordinator Surajit Ganguly said that this course will be appropriate for prospects who aspire to develop their careers in academia, regulatory bodies and healthcare Industry to combat emerging diseases.
  • The candidates need to possess Bachelor's degree in subjects related to Biological Sciences- Biomedical Sciences/ Life Sciences/ Zoology/Microbiology/ Chemistry/ Biochemistry etc with at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate.
  • The semester would consist of five papers, and one practical through semester 1, 2 and 3. Semester IV would comprise of the optional research area, from which each student has to select one dissertation work.
