Indonesia's President Joko Widodo Sworn In For Final Term

  •  Indonesia's President Joko Widodo has been sworn into office for his second and final five-year term amid a string of fresh challenges around security, corruption and economic slowdown. 
  • Widodo, a former furniture salesman popularly known as Jokowi, took oath at a ceremony in the capital, Jakarta, attended by politicians and foreign dignitaries. Re-elected in polls that took place in April, 2019 the 58-year-old was sworn into office along with 76-year-old vice president Maruf Amin, who replaces Widodo's vice president in his first term, Jusuf Kalla.

PM to attend 18th NAM Summit in Baku Oct 25-26

  •  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to be held on October 25-26 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has confirmed the prime minister's participation at the Summit of the Heads of State and Government.
  • The summit will be preceded by the preparatory senior officials meeting on October 21-22 and the preparatory ministerial meeting on October 23-24, 2019.
  • Foreign Minister Dr Momen will attend the ministerial meeting.     
  • Host Azerbaijan will formally take over the chairmanship of NAM for the next three years at the Baku Summit.

Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2019-20 (Series-6) Opens

  •  The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2019-20 (Series-6) opened from 21 October 2019. It will continue till 25 October, 2019.
  • The issue price of the Bond during this subion period will be three thousand eight hundred and 35 rupees per gram, with the settlement date of 30th October, 2019.
  • The Centre, in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India, has decided to allow a discount of 50 rupees per gram from the issue price to those investors who apply on-line and make the payment through the digital mode.
  • For such investors, the issue price of Gold Bond will be three thousand seven hundred and eighty five rupees per gram of gold.

MMTC Offers Discount On India Gold Coin To Mark 150th Birth Anniversary Of Mahatma Gandhi

  •  The Public sector Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC) is offering a three per cent discount on the India Gold Coin to mark the celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. 
  • MMTC Chairman Ved Prakash said that despite the global slow down, MMTC witnessed a record selling of gold. MMTC is geared up to cater to the city's festive season demand of gold and silver with a brand new edition of its festival of Gold Exhibition-cum-sale.   

FPIs Pour In Rs 5,072 Crore In Indian Capital Markets

  •  Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), have infused a net sum of  Rs.5,072 crore rupees into the Indian capital markets in October 2019 so far, amid the government's efforts to revive domestic demand.
  • As per the latest depositories data, foreign investors put in a net sum of 4,970 crore rupees in the equities and a net 102 crore rupees in the debt market.
  • FPIs had invested about 6,558 crore rupees in the domestic capital markets (both equity and debt).

Badminton: Kuhoo-Dhruv Pair Wins Egypt International Mixed Doubles Title

  •  Kuhoo Garg and Dhruv Rawat put up a brilliant effort to win the mixed doubles title at the Egypt International 2019 in Cairo.
  • The unseeded Garg and Rawat held their nerves for a tight 21-16, 22-20 victory over the third seeds Utkarsh Arora and Karishma Wadkar in an all-Indian final.
  • Meanwhile, at the Dubai International Challenge, Rituparna Das succumbed to a 21-23, 17-21 defeat in 36 minutes to Japan's World No. 208 Mako Urushizaki. The World No. 144 was looking for her first BWF title of the year, 2019.

Ajeetesh Sandhu Clinches Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational Title

  • Chandigarh's Ajeetesh Sandhu pipped Delhi's Rashid Khan for the title in a photo-finish on the final day of the Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational golf tournament.
  • Ajeetesh, playing at his home course, made a spectacular comeback in regulation play before coming through in a marathon playoff that lasted four extra holes at the Chandigarh Golf Club.
  • It was a classical contest for the ages that saw Sandhu collect the winning cheque worth Rs. 24,24,750 that catapulted him from 48th to second position in the TATA Steel PGTI Order of Merit.
  • Rashid extended his lead to over Rs 34 lakhs in the PGTI's money list despite his heart-breaking loss. Khan's PGTI earnings for 2019 now stand at a whopping Rs. 61,21,653.

Airtel Delhi Half Marathon: Ethiopa's Belihu, Gemechu Defend Titles

  •  Defending champions Andamlak Belihu and Tsehay Gemechu produced their personal best to retain the men's and women's titles, respectively, at the 15th Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.
  • Belihu's timing of 59:10 was better than the 59.18 that he had clocked to win the title last year but it was four seconds short of the course record set by Guye Adola (59.06) in 2014. Gemechu, on the other hand, smashed the course record by producing a personal best of 66:00.

Pune: India-Maldives joint military exercise 'Ex EKUVERIN - 2019' culminates

  •  India-Maldives joint military exercise 'Ex EKUVERIN - 2019' culminated with an impressive closing ceremony held at Foreign Training Node, Aundh Military Station, Pune.
  • The 14 day Joint Training that commenced on October 7, 2019 included joint training of the contingents in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban environment under the UN mandate, developing interoperability and cohesion between both the contingents.
  • The Maldivian contingent was represented by Marine troops of Maldivian National Defence Force, while the Indian side was represented by a battalion of the MAHAR regiment.

Indo-Japan Joint Military Exercise Dharma Guardian Commences In Mizoram

  •  The second edition of bilateral annual military exercise Dharma Guardian - 2019 between Indian and Japanese Army commenced at Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) Vairengte, Mizoram.
  • The Japanese contingent is represented by 34th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division of Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF), while the Indian side is represented by a battalion of the Dogra Regiment. 25 soldiers from each battalion are participating in this joint exercise.
  • The aim of the exercise is joint training of troops in counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations in both mountainous terrains. Exercise Dharma Guardian - 2019 will further cement the long-standing strategic ties between India and Japan.

Three Terror Launch Pads in PoK Destroyed, 6-10 Pakistani Soldiers Killed

  • In a major counter-offensive after Pakistan's unprovoked firing, the Indian Army carried out heavy artillery strikes targeting four terror launch pads and several Pakistani military positions in Neelam Valley in PoK, killing 6-10 of their soldiers and as many terrorists, Army Chief Bipin Rawat said.
  • The Indian retaliation came a day after Pakistan military resorted to firing in Tangadhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control to assist infiltration by terrorists, killing two Indian Army personnel and a civilian. Three others were also injured in the attack.
  • The retaliation has caused substantial harm to the terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC).

Maha Wrestling Legend Dadu Chougule Dies Of Heart Attack

  •  Wrestling legend Dadu Chougule died of a heart attack in Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
  • He was 73. He is survived by two sons.
  • Born in a farmer's family, Chougule received wrestling lessons early on and went on to join Motibaug Talim, one of the oldest talims (akharas or places for practicing wrestling), in Kolhapur which is known for its love for the traditional Indian sport.

  •  Election Commission has appointed Vinod Zutshi, former Deputy Election Commissioner as Special Observer for the ensuing elections to Assandh Assembly Constituency in Karnal District of Haryana.
  • Mr Zutshi has been asked to take necessary corrective action and ensure a free, fair and peaceful election.
  • The decision was taken in view of the alleged circulation of controversial information on a video circulating on social media.
  • Mr Zutshi has earlier worked as Chief Electoral Officer, Rajasthan.

  • Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan attended the G20 Okayama Health Ministers' Meeting on October 19-20, 2019 held under the Presidency of Japan in Okayama City, Japan.

Indian President Kovind Unveils Gandhi Bust In Miriam College Peace Center

  • Indian President Ram Nath Kovind unveils of the bust of Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi at the campus grounds of Miriam College in Quezon City which was attended by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and some cabinet officials. 
  • The unveiling of the bronze bust designed by renowned Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar marked the 150th birth anniversary of the Indian peace icon and the 70th year of Philippine-Indian diplomatic relations.
  • This is the first time that a bust of Gandhi was unveiled in the country. The Philippines now joins Switzerland, South Korea, Australia, Croatia, and Bulgaria among other countries in hosting a symbolic image of Gandhi.
