Jagoori Wins Vyas Samman For Poetry

  •  Noted Hindi poet Leeladhar Jagoori, whose poems often celebrate love and hope, received the KK Birla Foundation's 2018 Vyas Samman for his collection of poems, Jitne Log Utne Prem, his 12th anthology of poetry.
  • Renowned author Govind Mishra presented the 28th Vyas Samman to Jagoori, saying the love that is celebrated in his poetry is capable of bringing freshness even to a city as polluted as Delhi.
  • Jagoori, whose rich and varied experience includes a stint in the army, said that all religions expressed themselves through poetry. The award is conferred especially for contributions to Hindi literature and carries a prize of Rs 4 lakh and a citation. The KK Birla Foundation also confers the Saraswati Samman and Bihari Puraskar for literature in Indian languages.

Greta Thunberg Declines Environmental Prize

  •  The Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has refused to accept an environmental award, saying the climate movement needed people in power to start to "listen" to "science" and not awards.
  • The young climate activist, who has rallied millions to her "Fridays for Future" movement, was honoured at a Stockholm ceremony held by the Nordic Council, a regional body for inter-parliamentary cooperation.
  • She had been nominated for her efforts by both Sweden and Norway and won the organisation's annual environment prize.
  • But after it was announced, a representative for Thunberg told the audience that she would not accept the award or the prize sum of 350,000 Danish kroner (about $52,000 or €46,800). "The climate movement does not need any more awards," she wrote on Twitter.

Gandhi Mandela Award 2019

  •  The Gandhi Mandela Foundation, a New Delhi based non-profit organization, under the aegis of Interactive Forum on Indian Economy (a govt of India recognized 80G, 12A complaint), committed to the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, has constituted India's first International Award, The Gandhi Mandela Award.
  • Announcing the award on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Foundation said that the award honours exemplary work and achievements of the Heads of State and Government and other distinguished persons/organizations around the world.
  • The Gandhi Mandela Foundation believes that the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela are relevant even in today's world as they were in their lifetime.

JaspritBumrah, SmritiMandhana Win Wisden India Almanack Cricketer of the Year Award

  •  Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and batswoman Smriti Mandhana won the Wisden India Almanack Cricketer of the Year award. They were the two winners from India among five who won the award.
  • The other winners from Asia were Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman, Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne, and Afghanistan's Rashid Khan.
  • The seventh edition of the annual cricket publication for 2019 and 2020 also features Mayank Agarwal for his stellar domestic run which led to a Test call-up.
  • Mandhana became the third woman to win the award, after Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma.
  • Legends Gundappa Viswanath and Lala Amarnath were inducted into the Wisden India Hall of Fame.

Prasar Bharati CEO Gives away Rajbhasha Awards

  •  CEO, Prasar Bharati, Shashi Shekhar Vempati gave away Rajbhasha Awards to the winners of Hindi Pakhwada competition held at Prasar Bharati secretariat in September 2019.
  • Winners, who received awards are employees at Prasar Bharati Secretariat. 
  • The theme of the competition was 'Plastic Free India and Cleanliness drive'. The competition was conducted in 10 categories, including essay writing, poster making, story writing and others.
  • Addressing the gathering, Mr Vempati expressed hope that from next year onwards, social media and technology will possibly be brought in to make Hindi competition more innovative.

President Kovind to Present National Corporate Social Responsibility Awards

  •  President Ram Nath Kovind will present the National Corporate Social Responsibility Awards to the companies for their outstanding contribution in area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on 29th of October (2019) in New Delhi.  
  • The National CSR Awards have been instituted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to recognize corporate initiatives in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to achieve inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Jailed Uighur Intellectual Wins Sakharov Prize

  •  The European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize for human rights to Uighur intellectual Ilham Tohti, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in China for "separatism".
  • The outspoken former Professor of economics at a Beijing university was sentenced in 2014.
  • European Parliament head David Sassoli urged China to immediately release Ilham Tohti as he announced the award, which was certain to sow diplomatic tensions with Beijing.

Sadin-Pratidin's Lifetime Achievement Award to Homen Borgohain

  •  Every year, the Sadin-Pratidin group award is conferred on persons who have excelled in their chosen area of activities ranging from literature to corporate, and from culture to sports.
  • This time the Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on eminent writer-intellectual Homen Borgohain.
  • The ceremony was attended by Governor Prof Jagadish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while former President Pranab Mukherjee joined with a video link due to his indisposition.

E.U.'s Sakharov Human Rights Prize Awarded To Jailed Uighur Intellectual, Probably Angering China

  •  The European Union awarded its highest human rights prize to the imprisoned Uighur intellectual Ilham Tohti in a move that pointedly rebuked China's treatment of the Muslim ethnic minority and may draw a reprisal from Beijing.
  • Tohti, an economist who advocated greater autonomy for the Uighurs of Xinjiang in western China, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 on separatism charges.
  • He had spent years criticizing Chinese government restrictions and crackdowns on Uighur culture and calling for dialogue between his people and the Han ethnic majority in China.
  • In a statement announcing the 2019 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, European Parliament President David Sassoli called Tohti "a voice of moderation and reconciliation" and noted that China has detained more than 1 million Uighurs in internment camps since 2017.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg To Receive $1 Million Berggruen Prize For Philosophy And Culture

  •  Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the winner of this year's $1 million Berggruen Prize for philosophy and culture.
  • The award announced by the Los Angeles-based Berggruen Institute honors Ginsburg for her pioneering legal work for gender equality and her support for the rule of law. The institute says Ginsburg will direct the money to charity.
  • The 86-year-old Ginsburg has been on the Supreme Court since 1993.
  • She is the court's oldest justice, but maintains an active public speaking schedule that took her to the San Francisco Bay Area. Ginsburg has been treated for cancer twice in the past 10 months.

Kerala's Nedumangad Declared Best Block Panchayat

  •  Nedumangad block panchayat in Kerala has won the prestigious Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar for 2019.
  • Representatives of the panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district received the award from Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar at the national panchayat awards function.
  • Altogether Kerala's civic bodies were given nine awards appreciating their good work at different levels, including delivery of services and sanitation.
  • The other civic bodies which won the awards are Kolazhy (Thrissur district), Tirunavaya and Maranchery (Malappuram), Srikrishnapuram (Palakkad), Sasthankotta (Kollam) and Pappinisseri (Kannur).
