A group of Zambian citizens can take Vedanta Resources and its Zambian subsidiary, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), to court in the U.K. over allegations relating to the pollution of a river there, after Britain's Supreme Court rejected an attempt by the company to challenge the jurisdiction of British courts.
They will now be able to bring their claims for torts of negligence and breach of duty to the courts in the U.K., first initiated in 2015.
Vedanta Resources cannot appeal the jurisdiction judgment any further as its attempt to suggest recourse to the European Court of Justice during the Supreme Court proceedings was also rejected.
The judgment was read in court by Lord Briggs, with the four other justices considering the case, concurring with him.

Lawmakers Approve Sweeping Gun Reforms
New Zealand lawmakers have almost unanimously passed sweeping gun reforms, paving the way for a ban on military-style semi-automatic weapons to enter into force as soon as 12 April.
The new rules are aimed at removing semi-automatic firearms from circulation through a buy-back scheme, prohibition and harsh prison sentences.
A hand-in amnesty will be in place until 30 September 2019, and perpetrators will face between two and ten years in jail for breaking the laws.
The debt resolution process of Jet Airways suffered a setback with many prospective investors staying away from submitting expression of interest (EoI) before the deadline.
SBI Capital Markets Ltd. (SBI Caps), acting on behalf of the lenders, extended the deadline to April 12.
The last date for receipt of EoI was April 10, 2019.

Anchor Takes a New Identity
Anchor Electricals Private Limited has been renamed as Panasonic Life Solutions India Private Limited (PLSIPL) with effect from April 1, 2019.

GPF Interest Retained at 8%
The government has retained the interest rate for General Provident Fund (GPF) and other related schemes at 8% for the April-June quarter.
The rate is in line with that of Public Provident Fund.
The interest rate will be applicable on provident funds of central government employees, railways and defence forces.

Google Unveils Anthos
Google has introduced a new open platform called "Anthos" to run and manage apps from anywhere.
Based on the Cloud Services Platform that Google announced in 2018, "Anthos" lets users run applications on existing on-premise hardware investments or in the Public Cloud.
Anthos not only allows customers to deploy Google Cloud in their own data centres but also gives them the flexibility to build, run and manage their workloads within their data centre, on Google Cloud, or other cloud providers (Multi-Cloud), without making any changes.
Anthos will also let users manage workloads running on third-party clouds like Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure.

The Supreme Court dismissed the government's plea to declare the Rafale jets' purchase documents a secret, while upholding the right of free speech of The Hindu to publish the defence papers in a series of articles since February 2019.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who shared the lead judgment with Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, said that The Hindu's right to publish the Rafale documents was in consonance with the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech.
With this, the apex court has dismissed preliminary objections raised by the government against petitions seeking a review of the December 14, 2018 judgment of the Supreme Court, which upheld the deal for purchase of 36 Rafale jets.
The government had claimed that the review pleas were based on secret Rafale documents unauthorisedly removed from the Ministry of Defence and leaked to the media.
NGT Sets up Central Monitoring Panel
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a Central Monitoring Committee to ensure the implementation of action plan meant for reducing pollution stretches across the country.
A Bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that it is necessary to constitute a Central Monitoring Committee to undertake a national initiative by way of preparation and enforcement of a national plan to make river stretches pollution-free.
Senior representatives of NITI Aayog, Secretaries of the Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will be a part of the panel, apart from the Chairman, Central Pollution Control Board and Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga.
The panel will coordinate with States to oversee the action plans and ensure execution of the same.
Indian Army will soon have the T-90MS Main Battle Tank in its arsenal after the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) gave the go-ahead for procuring 464 more tanks for almost Rs. 13,448 crore ($1.93 billion). The T-90MS is the latest version of the tank with the Russian Army and the Indian Army's armoured regiments already have the T-90S.

The new high court for Andhra Pradesh was created on January 1, 2019, following the bifurcation of a combined high court for AP and Telangana, which had been operating from Hyderabad since June 2, 2014, when the two Telugu states got separated.
Since the bifurcation of the high court, Justice C. Praveen Kumar had been functioning as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

India skipper Virat Kohli was named as the 'Leading Cricketer in the World' for the third successive time by the 2019 edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
Smriti Mandhana bagged the women's 'Leading Cricketer in the World.'
Kohli, who amassed 2735 runs across the three formats in 2018, was also picked as one of the five 'Wisden Cricketers of the Year', along with England's Tammy Beaumont, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Rory Burns.
Kohli is only the third cricketer ever to have won the award more than three times after Don Bradman (10 times) and Jack Hobbs (8 times).
Saraswati Samman
Telugu poet K. Siva Reddy is to be conferred the prestigious Saraswati Samman, 2018, for his collection of poems titled Pakkaki Ottigilite (Turning Aside While Lying Down).
The award, instituted by the KK Birla Foundation, is given annually for an outstanding literary work written in any official Indian language and published during the preceding 10 years.
It is the highest recognition in the field of Indian literature and carries a cash purse of Rs 15 lakh, apart from a citation and a plaque.
Past recipients of the Saraswati Samman include poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, and writers Vijay Tendulkar, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Dr Indira Parthasarathy Ramanujar, among many others.
According to statics, the pass percentage in Delhi government schools for class 11 has touched 80% for the first time since 2010.
The results of the annual exams of all classes (other than class 10 and 12) in Delhi government schools conducted centrally by the Directorate of Education (DoE) were declared on March 30, 2019.
The statistics takes into account figures from 2010 onwards. While 71% students of Class 11 passed their exam in 2017-18, it has improved to 80% in 2018-19.
