Defence Ministry Awards Contract to GRSE

  • The defence ministry awarded a Rs. 6,311-crore contract to public sector shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) to supply anti-submarine warfare boats to the navy.
  • Of the eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASWSWC) on order, the yard will deliver the first ship in 42 months followed by two boats every year. The current projects being executed by the yard include stealth frigates, anti-submarine warfare corvettes and survey vessels for the navy and fast patrol vessels for the coast guard.

Army Invokes Emergency Powers

  • The Army is in the process of procuring Spike-LR Anti-Tank Missiles from Israel and Igla-S Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORAD) from Russia through a set of new financial powers for emergency procurements sanctioned by the Defence Ministry earlier this month.
  • Under the latest emergency financial powers, armed forces have been given a free hand to procure equipment worth up to Rs. 300 crore on a priority basis.
  • Under the emergency route, the Army is looking to procure about 12 launchers and around 250 missiles for each system.

Army Starts Process to Induct Women as Military Police

  •  In a historic first, the Army began the process to induct women in the military police, nearly two years after Army Chief Gen.
  • Bipin Rawat said that women will be recruited as jawans.
  • The Army started the online registration for recruitment in the Corps of military and the last date for filing application has been fixed as June 8.

Army to Build Tunnels to Store Ammunition

  • Indian Army is planning to construct underground tunnels for storage of ammunition along the border with China and Pakistan and Public Sector Undertaking NHPC Limited is being roped in for the purpose.
  • Indian Army is in the process of executing pilot projects for construction of semi underground and cavern type ammunition storage construction through NHPC Ltd. for which a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed in the coming days.
  • These tunnels will be built in high altitude areas in the Northern and Eastern borders. Initially, four pilot projects would be taken up at four different locations along the Northern border and in Jammu and Kashmir. These are expected to be completed within two years.

Indian Coast Guard on High Alert

  •  The Indian Coast Guard has been put on high alert along the maritime boundary with Sri Lanka in the aftermath of deadly explosions in the island nation.
  • The Coast Guard is has increased patrolling activities in the Palk Strait. Ships and maritime surveillance aircraft Dornier have reportedly been deployed with the primary objective of ensuring that the suicide bombers responsible for the explosions are unable to escape from Sri Lanka.

Anniversary of the People's Liberation Army Navy

  • Battleships from India and countries like Singapore and Australia arrived in eastern Chinese city of Qingdao on Sunday to take part in a maritime parade to mark the 70th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army Navy.
  • China is expected to display new warships, including nuclear submarines, destroyers, warplanes and the country's first aircraft carrier, at the parade in the Yellow Sea off the Qingdao coast.
