Ravi Uppal Chairman for Raymond Subsidiaries

  •  Ravi Uppal, chairman and managing director of Steel Infra Solutions Private Ltd., has been appointed as Chairman of Ring Plus Aqua Ltd., and JK Files (India) Ltd., the two subsidiaries of Raymond Ltd.
  • Gautam Hari Singhania has stepped down from the position of the chairman of Ring Plus.
  • Previously he had stepped down as chairman of JK Files.
  • Mr. Uppal had worked with Volvo, ABB, L&T and Jindal Steel and Power.

Indian Envoy to Seychelles

  •  Former army chief General Dalbir Singh was named as the Indian High Commissioner India to Seychelles, an Indian Ocean island nation.
  • Mr. Singh is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
  • Gen Singh was the army chief when India carried out surgical strikes against terror launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in September 2016.
  • His appointment is being seen as recognition of his achievements when he was the army chief from 2014 to 2016. 

Khaira Quits Assembly

  •  Former Aam Aadmi Party leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira resigned as legislator from the Punjab Assembly.
  • Mr. Khaira, who had floated the Punjabi Ekta Party, said that he decided to resign as a legislator as he would be filing his nomination papers as a candidate of the Punjab Democratic Alliance from the Bathinda parliamentary constituency.

Joe Biden Announces White House Bid

  •  Former U.S. Vice-President Joseph R. Biden Jr. announced that he will run for the office of President in 2020.
  • Mr. Biden's move has been anticipated for months. The six-term former Senator from Delaware joins a galaxy of 19 Democratic presidential hopefuls, including women and progressives, as well as Hispanic, Asian, African-American, gay and millennial candidates.
  • Mr. Biden has made two previous bids for the White House (in 1998 and 2008). After losing his 2008 bid, he went on to serve, for two terms, as Vice-President in the Barack Obama administration.

Sunny Deol Joins BJP

  • Film star Sunny Deol joined the BJP, and was fielded from the Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency that had previously been held by another cine star, the late Vinod Khanna.
  • Mr. Deol, however, is not the only celebrity or late recruit awarded with party ticket by the BJP. The party is fighting the largest number of seats it has ever fought since it was founded in 1980, and has spread the net far and wide to snag likely candidates.
  • Among the celebrity inductees fielded so far are cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Bhojpuri stars Ravi Kishan and Dinesh Yadav alias Nirauwa, singer Hansraj Hans, actress Jaya Prada and Bengali actress Locket Chatterjee. Some celebrity candidates have been repeated from 2014, including actress Hema Malini and Union Minister and musician Babul Supriyo. Those who joined the party just before the polls and given a party ticket include Arvind Sharma of the Congress, A. Manju and Umesh Jadhav.

Manish Maheshwari Appointed as India MD Twitter

  •  Twitter India appointed Manish Maheshwari, ex-CEO of Network18 Digital, as the Managing Director for its India operations.
  • Maheshwari will be responsible for driving an integrated business strategy to accelerate Twitter`s audience and revenue growth in the country.

Special Observer for Tripura

  •  The Election Commission has appointed former Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi, a retired IAS officer, as a special observer for East Tripura polls.
  • The Commission had earlier made Mr. Zutshi a special observer, along with retired IAS officer Noor Mohammad and retired IPS officer A.S. Gill, for assessing the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir and determine the feasibility for holding State Assembly elections there.

  • Paytm Payments Bank Ltd. (PPB) has appointed entrepreneur Sairee Chahal to its board of directors. Ms. Chahal is the founder and CEO of SHEROES, a community platform for women. She has comprehensive experience of customer service ecosystem.

Abhinandan Shifted Out of Srinagar

  • The Indian Air Force is likely to recommend Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was captured by Pakistan and released later, for Vir Chakra, the coveted wartime gallantry medal. The medal is the third highest after the Paramvir Chakra and the Mahavir Chakra. He has now been shifted out of Srinagar and posted at a frontline air base in the Western sector.

First Indian Woman Scientist in London's Royal Society

  •  The Royal Society, London, selected 51 distinguished scientists from across the world as Fellows and Foreign Members on April 16 for their exceptional contributions in the field of science. 
  • Among this year's group of Fellows are Indian clinician scientist Gagandeep Kang and three Indian-origin scientists — American-Canadian mathematician Manjul Bhargava, Australian mathematician Akshay Venkatesh and British microbiologist Gurdyal Besra.
  • Kang is the first Indian woman scientist to be selected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Before Kang, two Indian origin women scientists — British microscopist Pratibha Gai (2016) and American microbiologist Lalita Ramakrishnan (2018) — had received the honour.
  • Kang is a clinician scientist and a professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the famous Christian Medical College, Vellore.
  • She is the current executive director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad, which is an autonomous institution under the department of biotechnology of the science and technology ministry.
  • Kang is renowned for her work on viral infections in children, particularly on rotavirus infections that cause high mortality and morbidity in India. She has shown that the Indian population naturally has a lower immunity to rotavirus infections. 

Priyanka Chaturvedi Quits Congress

  •  The Congress lost one of its key spokespersons after Priyanka Chaturvedi resigned from the party and joined the Shiv Sena, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally, in Mumbai.
  • Her resignation comes days after Chaturvedi expressed displeasure in an April 17 tweet over the reinstatement of Uttar Pradesh Congress workers who had been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with her during a press conference in Mathura in September 2018.
