Prof. D. Surya Prakasa Rao Appointed as Vice-Chancellor of DSNLU Visakhapatnam

  • Prof. D. Surya Prakasa Rao was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU), Vishakhapatnam.
  • Prof. Rao succeeded Prof. P. Sree Sudha, who served as Officiating Vice-Chancellor at the University.
  • He was previously teaching at Dr. BR Ambedkar College of Law, Andhra University.
  • Rao shall hold the office for a tenure of five years or until he turns 70 years, whichever is earlier.
  • He has a Doctorate in Law from Nagpur University in 1997 and also studied LL.B. (1982-1983) and LL.M. (1983-1985) from Nagpur University. He was previously Visiting Professor of Law at Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur. He has also served the Andhra University Law College in different capacities.

Alumination - IIT-Bombay's Annual Fest Held

  • IIT-Bombay's annual flagship fest 'Alumination' took place on October 21 and October 22.
  • The agenda for Alumination 2023 included segments like Speed Mentoring, Transverse Mentoring, Industry Learning Program, Beyond the Horizon, Coming Full Circle, and Break the Ice. The association also introduced the Innovation Expo for the very first time.
  • The Alumination platform is a fertile ground for exploring the innovations and start-ups by IIT Bombay graduates that might shape the landscape of tomorrow.

IIT-Delhi, THDC India Limited Collaborate for Transformative Research and Development Initiatives

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the THDC India Limited (THDCIL), a Central Public Sector Enterprise focused on advancing research and development activities in Science, Engineering, and Technology.
  • The agreement is set to span five years. Due to this partnership, THDCIL will partner with IIT Delhi to conduct research studies, pilot projects, and consulting engagements led by faculty members.
  • As a part of this partnership, IIT Delhi will offer essential infrastructural support and access to scientific, engineering, and technical expertise. These resources will be instrumental in facilitating R&D activities, aligning with the academic pursuits of the institute.
  • This collaborative venture between THDCIL and IIT Delhi represents a significant step forward in the fields of research, innovation, and technological advancement, with the potential to yield ground-breaking solutions for various industries and domains.

Ministry of Education Reconstitutes JAB for Better Conduct of JEE-Main, Advanced

  • The Ministry of Education reconstituted the board structure and administrative framework of the JEE Apex Board (JAB) for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in IITs, NITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) etc.
  • As per the notification, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will manage all information technology-related (software) support and back-end activities for pre and post-examination work, including online submission of application forms. "NTA may seek support from NIC/C-DAC as and when required.
  • Professor S. K. Jain, VC of BHU was appointed as the chairperson of JAB. Directors of IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, NIT Rourkela, NIT Surathkal, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT (PPP} Lucknow, IIITM Gwalior, representatives of state government of Madhya Pradesh, Assam /Manipur, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab Engineering College, Chairman of CBSE, Director General of NIC, NTA and C-DAC, and the Additional Secretary/ Joint Secretary (TE) of MoE were appointed as members.

Odisha's Centurion University Hosts Cancer Awareness Programme, Screening Camp

  • India's first skill varsity, Odisha's Centurion University of Technology and Management, organised a 'Cancer & No Tobacco Awareness Program and Screening Camp' in collaboration with the Cuttack-based Awaaken Cancer Care Trust.
  • The event was attended by Centurion University Vice Chancellor Dr. Supriya Pattanayak and Awaaken Trust chairperson & cancer activist Ms. Swagatika Acharya among other dignitaries.
  • The awareness programme and screening camp were also attended by Dr Kshitish Mishra, an Oncologist from MD Carcinova Hospital, who made a presentation on Cancer and the ill effects of tobacco on humans.

IIT Guwahati Develops 'Point-of-Care' Device for Instant Glycemic Index Detection

  • Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) developed a reliable and affordable Glycemic Index (GI) sensor, suitable for point-of-care detection. This sensor can determine the GI of different food sources in real-time, which is crucial for diabetes management.
  • The research was led by Professor Dipankar Bandyopadhyay, Department of Chemical Engineering.
  • The Glycemic Index or GI is a measure that ranks carbohydrate-containing foods based on how they affect blood sugar levels when consumed.
  • The research has been funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

UGC Launches WhatsApp Channel for Real-time Updates on Higher Education

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) launched the UGC India WhatsApp Channel for real-time updates on higher education. The WhatsApp channel, UGC-India WhatsApp Channel, seeks to foster an 'inclusive and informed higher education landscape'.
  • With the launch of the new channel, students, faculty, colleges and universities will be able to navigate information on higher education in real-time.
  • The UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar while launching the channel said that the launch of the UGC India WhatsApp channel is a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and informed higher education landscape.

IIT Bhilai Strengthens Ties with DAAD for International Scientific Cooperation

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), a German Academic Exchange Service, to further their mutual scientific interests and promote greater collaboration between both countries.
  • The German Academic Exchange Service is the largest German support organisation in international academic cooperation, and its collaboration with IIT Bhilai will enable a greater flow of information and key scientific knowledge.
  • By signing this MoU, both institutions recognise the mutual value of academic and scientific cooperation among scientists from both countries and strive to build cordial relations between their students and researchers.
  • The DAAD and IIT Bhilai's bilateral exchange programme aims to enhance collaboration between them and German universities or research institutions.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches 'Apna Chandrayaan' Programme to Develop Scientific Temper among Schoo...

  • The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the 'Apna Chandrayaan programme'. As part of the programme, the Education Minister launched a web portal with activity-based support materials including colouring books, online quizzes and jigsaw puzzles on India's Chandrayaan mission. These activity-based support materials for school students have been developed by the NCERT.
  • Dr. Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, was present as the guest of honour at the launch of the programme.
  • The activity-based support materials and special modules on Chandrayaan-3 are aimed at developing scientific temper, curiosity, problem-solving and creativity among school students.

Haryana to Establish Sainik Schools in PPP Mode

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that Sainik Schools in Public-Private-Partnership mode will be established in various districts of the state.
  • This will not only enhance the state's contribution to the armed forces but also prepare a substantial number of Agniveers.
  • Khattar was speaking at the closing ceremony of the All India Sainik School National Games-2023, hosted at Sainik School, Kunjpura in Karnal. He also announced a grant of Rs. 10 crore to develop the school's infrastructure.
