Health Ministry Reduces NEET PG Cut-off to Zero Percentile for this Year

The Union health ministry decided to reduce the qualifying percentile for leftover postgraduate (PG) seats in medical colleges to zero, a move that the Indian Medical Association (IMA) hailed but others in the medical profession have characterised as bizarre.
In other words, this means that all candidates who appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (PG), 2023, are now eligible for admission to seats that may still be available in MD/MS courses following two rounds of counselling, as there are no minimum qualifying marks.
In response to the order, the IMA — the largest network of doctors in India — issued a statement thanking the health minister and saying it had requested the government to do this.
Before this, the cut-off percentile for admission to PG seats during the first two rounds of counselling had been 50 for the unreserved category, 45 for the PwD (persons with disabilities) category and 40 for reserved-category students.

Economist Shankar Acharya New Chancellor of AP Central University

Veteran economist and former chief economic advisor to the government of India, Shankar Acharya, was appointed as the chancellor of Andhra Pradesh Central University.
Previously, Acharya worked as an economic advisor in the ministry of finance. He also served as India's longest-serving Chief Economic Advisor (CEA), who advised three successive finance ministers: Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha for eight years between 1993 and 2001.
During the latter part of his tenure as the CEA, Acharya also served as a member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
He has also worked in the World Bank, where he led the team for the World Development Report 1979 and then served as a research advisor to the bank. Since 2001, Acharya has been an Honorary Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

British Council Announces 12 New Academic Grants

The British Council announced 12 new academic grants and two new top-up grants worth £500k for industry-academia partnerships across India and the UK. It is a part of the British Council's Going Global Partnership (GGP) programme.
The announcement was made at the India-UK Higher Education Conference in Delhi. Out of all the new grants most of them are collaborating with technological institutions.

Bihar to Recruit over 69,000 Teachers in Schools, Cabinet Gives Nod

The Bihar cabinet approved the recruitment of 69,692 teachers in state-run schools.
The cabinet also gave approval for a 100 per cent hike in the monthly honorarium of 'Siksha Sewaks' and Vikas Mitras'. Around 9,825 Vikas Mitras working under the SC and ST Welfare Department in the state's panchayats will now get a monthly honorarium of over Rs. 25,000 as against the existing Rs. 13,700, and an annual increment of 5 per cent every year.
'Vikas Mitras' work on the implementation of various developmental and welfare schemes by the government in rural areas.
After the increase in the honorarium for 'Shiksha Sewaks', they will get Rs. 22,000 as against Rs. 11,000 per month, besides an annual increment of 5 per cent.

Australian University of Wollongong to Establish GIFT City Campus in by 2024

Australia's University of Wollongong (UOW) is going global, with a new campus set to be launched in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India by July 2024.
UOW and Deakin University received permissions from the International Financial Services Centre Authorities (IFSCA) to establish their international campuses in GIFT City.
The UOW GIFT City campus aims to welcome its first 500 students by July 2024, with a focus on finance and business.
UOW aims to leverage the global network of institutions it brings to GIFT City and the fact that it offers a hub for students from various countries to actively study together.

Himachal Pradesh Launches 'School Safety' App for Disaster Management Plans

The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has developed a mobile app to help schools prepare a School Disaster Management Plan.
Competitions for all schools will be organised to encourage the best preparation of the School Disaster Management Plan (SDMP).
To incentivise participation and excellence in preparing the SDMP, the top school will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, the next three best entries will receive Rs. 50,000 each and the other six best entries will receive Rs. 30,000 each.
The SDMP, prepared until September 30, 2023, will only be considered for prizes to be given on October 12.

IIT Gandhinagar Wins International Green University Award 2023 for Promoting Environmental Sustai...

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) won the International Green University Award 2023. The award presented by the Green Mentors, USA is a non-government organisation with special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
This award ceremony was held at the 7th NYC Green School Conference conducted at the Cornell University, USA.
The International Green University Award acknowledges universities worldwide that have integrated sustainability into their core values, operations, and academic programmes for community and student engagement and have implemented sustainable practices such as energy-efficient infrastructure, renewable energy solutions, waste reduction and recycling programmes, and sustainable transportation initiatives.
This award recognises IIT Gandhinagar's remarkable efforts and outstanding achievements in promoting environmental sustainability and instilling eco-conscious values among students.

Large-scale UK Universities Delegation in India to Talk Transnational Education

In what is the largest delegation of its kind, representatives from 31 UK universities and education leaders are in India to discuss the future of Transnational Education (TNE).
This follows a year of conversations with the Indian education system, which has seen significant reforms and an increased focus on global collaborations for learning and innovation.
Coordinated by the Department for Business and Trade, the delegation will meet with stakeholders from various Indian universities, as well as state and central government bodies across Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Chennai.
The goal of this five-day visit is to internationalise higher education institutions through the expansion of partnerships, offering dual degrees and fostering research collaborations.

Delhi: RML Hospital Opens India's First Dedicated OPD for Transgender Community

The Centre-run Dr RML Hospital inaugurated India's first dedicated OPD for the transgender community on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday.
This dedicated OPD service is available to transgenders every Friday and there will be a separate registration counter for them.
At India's first dedicated OPD for transgenders, they will be provided with an endocrinology facility with hormone analysis and free hormonal treatment, a psychiatry facility with clinical-psychological assessment, and plastic surgery, Dr. Shukla said.
The initiative was started to alleviate the difficulties encountered by members of the transgender community in accessing healthcare services, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination and social apathy.

PM Modi to Inaugurate Atal Residential Schools

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to officially inaugurate all 18 Atal Residential Schools, a key pro-rural and pro-poor initiative by the Yogi Adityanath government, on September 23.
The establishment of Atal Residential Schools in all the divisional headquarters of the state by the Yogi government is an innovative initiative to provide excellent residential facilities and quality education free of cost to the children of labourers and destitute children due to COVID-19 in the state.

IIT Kanpur Faculty Elected as Fellows of INSA

Two professors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur were elected for the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Fellowship 2023-24. The two IIT Kanpur professors are Prof. Bushra Ateeq and Prof. Nitin Saxena.
Prof. Bushra Ateeq is a Professor and Joy-Gill Chair Senior Fellow at the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, IIT Kanpur. She is revered for her extensive work on cancer research.
The second recipient, Prof. Nitin Saxena, is from the Computer Science and Engineering Department, and is also the founding Coordinator of the Center for Developing Intelligent Systems (CDIS) at IIT Kanpur.

IIT Madras Launches Jal Dhan Campaign to Conserve Water

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras launched the Jal Dhan Campaign in the campus. The campaign, inaugurated during the National Level Water Conclave 2023, is in line with the theme of Sustainable Agriculture with millet focus, water conservation and rainwater harvesting in industrial sectors. The Indian government is also working to rejuvenate 75 water bodies in each district of the country.
IIT Madras is very committed to this major task, which is one of the prime deliverables of the Sustainable Development Goals. All the 17 SDGs put forward by the United Nations have some connection to water, either implicitly or explicitly.

Defence Minister Approves to Set-up 23 New SAINIK Schools under Partnership Mode

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the setting up of 23 New Sainik Schools in partnership mode, thereby increasing the tally of such schools functioning under the aegis of Sainik School Society to 42, apart from the existing 33 Sainik Schools already functioning under the erstwhile pattern.
The schools will set up in a graded manner class-wise, starting from Class 6 onwards. A memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed under this initiative by the Sainik Schools Society with 19 new Sainik Schools located all over the country.
