PM Modi Announces Centre to Establish Central Tribal University in Telangana's Mulugu

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Central government will be establishing a Central Tribal University in Mulugu district of Telangana.
  • The cost of the project will be Rs. 900 crore. The university will be named after the tribal goddesses— Samakka and Sarakka. The setting up of a Central Tribal University in Mulugu district will benefit the youth, especially those from tribal communities.
  • He also announced that the Central University of Hyderabad has been given the title of Institution of Eminence and provided it with a special fund.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches the Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav

  • Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav and inaugurated the two-day Technology & Bharatiya Bhasha Summit at New Delhi. The summit aimed to facilitate a seamless transition from the current education ecosystem to one rooted in Bharatiya languages, in line with the NEP-2020 vision and to set the course for a technologically enriched future for Bharatiya languages in education. An exhibition was also set up to showcase Bharatiya Bhasha technology products, and their applications by the industries, government organizations and start-ups. An inspiring moment was the presentation of a significant book by various officials to dignitaries, symbolizing the rich literary heritage of Bharatiya languages.
  • The summit, organized as part of the Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav, encompassed three pivotal thematic sessions: (i) Technology FOR Bharatiya Languages; (ii) Technology IN Bharatiya Languages; and (iii) Technology THROUGH Bharatiya Languages. Two technical sessions were held under the theme of 'Technology FOR Bharatiya Languages'. In these sessions, speakers and experts discussed ways and means to leverage technology for Bharatiya languages. The role of technology in the teaching-learning process of Bharatiya languages, the use of Machine Learning, Language modelling for speech recognition, Unicode standardization for Bharatiya language scripts, and other important aspects were also discussed in detail during these sessions. Both sessions were followed up with intense discussions among the audience and the speakers.

IIT Kanpur Launches Six New Online PG Programmes

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur launched six new online postgraduate programmes.
  • Admission to these online programmes at IIT Kanpur will not require GATE scores.
  • While three of the new online PG programmes – Data Science and Business Analytics, Financial Technology and Management, and Power Sector Regulation, Economics, and Management will be run through the Department of Management Sciences, the eMasters degrees in Business Finance, Financial Analysis, and Public Policy were launched by the Department of Economics.

THE Rankings 2024: Oxford University Best in World

  • As per the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings 2024, the UK's University of Oxford is the highest ranked university in the world with Stanford University taking second place, making it the top ranked university in the US, and in third place is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
  • The top 10 universities in the world are: University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of California, Berkeley and Yale University.
  • In the top 10 of THE Rankings 2024, seven universities are from the US, while the other three are from the UK.

BITS Pilani, ICWA Ink MoU for Student Internships at Rajya Sabha

  • The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani signed an MoU with the Indian Council of World Affairs. Through this partnership, five BITS Pilani students will be selected for internships at Rajya Sabha. As a part of this partnership, BITS Pilani students will also be given the opportunity to visit Rajya Sabha as guests.
  • This MoU was announced by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, while he was on a visit to the institute along with Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal.
  • BITS Pilani is headed by Prof V Ramgopal Rao, who is the Vice Chancellor of the university, and has served as the Director of IIT Delhi from 2016 till 2021.

Ministries of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Sign MoUs with IBM

  • The Ministries of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship signed 8 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with IBM on digital skilling and skilling in emerging technologies. The collaboration will focus on co-creation of curriculum for skilling learners across school education, higher education and vocational skills on emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing and professional development skills.
  • Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan was present at the event.
  • At school education level, IBM will provide access to digital content from IBM SkillsBuild for high school students, teachers and trainers. They will be identified by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
  • At the higher education level, IBM will work closely with the Department of Higher Education, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh and state skilling missions. It will provide access to affiliated students and faculty to IBM SkillsBuild. They will get access to digital content, experiential learning and fresh skills enabling them to take on technical careers.

J&K Gets First Space Lab for Government School Students

  • The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir inaugurated its first space lab at Government Higher Secondary School Boys, Kishtwar. The space lab is specially designed for the government school students. The space lab, developed under the ISRO space tutor programme by Vyomika Space Academy was funded by the Directorate of Education Jammu.
  • The inaugural ceremony was held at Government Higher Secondary School Boys Kishtwar in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, Devansh Yadav, Chief Education Officer Prehlad Bhagat and I/C Principal of the host school Sandeep Rathore. Students and staff of the school were also present and witnessed this landmark event.
  • The setting up of the space lab in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar government school represents a significant leap in educational technology.

  • The DoE Nirikshan app is specifically created to empower both students and teachers, enabling them to voice school-related concerns and ensure swift resolution.
  • The app can be accessed by using student and teacher IDs. It promises to revolutionise the way issues in Delhi government schools are addressed.
  • The DoE Nirikshan app serves as a dynamic platform for instant communication, enabling users to submit requests concerning various school-related matters to the administration directly.
