PM Modi Honoured with Bhutan's 'Order of the Druk Gyalpo' Award

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi created history by becoming the first non-Bhutanese to receive the 'Order of the Druk Gyalpo', Bhutan's highest civilian award. He received this prestigious honour from Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck during his two-day state visit to Thimphu. The 'Order of the Druk Gyalpo' is a lifetime achievement award and is considered the pinnacle of Bhutan's honour system. Only four eminent personalities have received this award since its institution.

COP28 President Wins Award for Sustainable Energy Leadership

  • Sultan Al Jaber, the President of COP28 (the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference), received the "CERAWeek Leadership Award for Building Global Consensus towards a Sustainable Energy Future" from CERAWeek by S&P Global. This prestigious award recognised his extraordinary leadership in delivering the UAE Consensus, a groundbreaking agreement that outlined concrete pathways for countries and industries to transition to sustainable energy systems and keep global warming within 1.5°C.
  • The UAE Consensus, achieved during COP28 in Dubai, was a historic achievement in global climate action. It secured several critical commitments from all participating countries, including:
  • Transition away from fossil fuels: A commitment to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a just, orderly, and equitable manner.
  • Renewable energy targets: Time-bound targets to triple global renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.
  • Inclusive approach: The consensus was reached through a spirit of multilateralism, inclusivity, and partnership, bringing together governments, industries, civil society, and other stakeholders.

Michel Talagrand Wins Abel Prize for Randomness Studies

  • A French mathematician who says maths "gives you wings" was awarded the Abel Prize - one of the most prestigious honours in the field.
  • Michel Talagrand received the award for his groundbreaking contributions, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters said.
  • His work in probability theory involved understanding random phenomena.
  • Talagrand, who is now retired, is the fifth Frenchman to win the prize since it was founded in 2003.
  • Named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, the prize was created by Norway's government, partly to compensate for the lack of a Nobel Prize for mathematics.
  • The winner is chosen by a committee of five internationally recognised mathematicians and comes with a 7.5 million kroner (£858,941) cheque.

T. M. Krishna Gets Sangita Kalanidhi Award

  • Carnatic classical vocalist T. M. Krishna, the musician at the forefront of challenging the conventional ideas about caste and gender politics in Carnatic music besides highlighting the institutional issues and non-inclusivity of the famed December Music Season, was conferred the Sangita Kalanidhi award, the most prestigious recognition in Carnatic music, by the Madras Music Academy.

Indian Youth Uday Bhatia and Manasi Gupta Receive 'Diana Memorial Award'

  • Uday Bhatia and Manasi Gupta from India were honoured with the prestigious 'Diana Memorial Award'.
  • Along with them, a total of 20 people from around the world were honoured with the 'Diana Memorial Award'.
  • This award is given every two years in memory of Princess Diana. It recognises exceptional youth for their social work or humanitarian services.
  • The Diana Award charity, established in memory of the late Princess of Wales, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
  • Uday Bhatia is an inventor from Delhi. His company, Uday Electric, founded by the 18-year-old, is headquartered in Delhi. Uday's low-cost invention can provide relief from power cuts.
  • Manasi Gupta is a mental health campaigner from Haryana. The Huesothemind Foundation, founded by Manasi Gupta, is headquartered in Gurugram. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 24-year-old's mental health services were appreciated, and she received recognition.

Renowned Poet Prabha Varma Selected for Saraswati Samman for the Year 2023

  • Renowned poet Prabha Varma has been selected for the Saraswati Samman for the year 2023 for his work in Malayalam language. He has been considered for this award for his Malayalam language poetry work, Roudra Sathwikam and also for his contribution to the literature during the period 2013 to 2022. 
  • Roudra Sathwikam is a poetic work of Prabha Varma in Malyalam language which was published in 2022. The novel in poetic verse probes the conflict between power and politics, individual and state, art and power in a unique manner.
  • Instituted in 1991 by K. K. Birla, Saraswati Samman is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the country. It is given every year to an outstanding literary work written in any Indian language by an Indian citizen and published within the last 10 years. It carries a citation, a plaque, and a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee, whose current head is former Supreme Court judge, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri.
