Akshaya Mukul Wins Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize

  • Author Akshaya Mukul won the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize 2023 for his biography of Hindi writer-poet Agyeya – 'Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover: The Many Lives of Agyeya'.
  • The book, published by Penguin Random House, offers a panoramic view of the Hindi literature' through Agyeya's life.
  • The winner of the sixth edition was selected from a diverse shortlist of five books across a range of Indian history, including Achyut Chetan's 'Founding Mothers of the Indian Republic', Rotem Geva's 'Delhi Reborn: Partition and Nation Building in India's Capital', Gita Ramaswamy's 'Land, Guns, Caste, Woman: Memoirs of a Lapsed Revolutionary', and Taylor C Sherman's 'Nehru's India: A History in Seven Myths'.
  • The book prize recognises excellence in non-fiction writings about modern and contemporary Indian history by writers of all nationalities.

French Government Honours Translator and Writer Arshia Sattar

  • Renowned author and translator Arshia Sattar was honoured with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. The prestigious award was presented by Thierry Mathou, the ambassador of France to India, in a ceremony held at the Consulate General of France in Bengaluru.
  • Arshia Sattar, based in Bengaluru, has made significant contributions to Indian literature and mythology. Notable among her works are translations of epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, as well as tales from Kathasaritsagara. Her literary prowess extends to creating engaging books for children, with 'The Mahabharata for Children' earning her the Sahitya Akademi Prize for Children's Literature in 2022.

Power Grid Honoured SKOCH Gold Award 2023

  • In a significant recognition of its excellence in the power sector, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Ministry of Power, was honoured with the prestigious SKOCH Gold Award 2023. The accolade was bestowed upon PGCIL for its groundbreaking Pugalur Thrissur 2000 MW Voltage Source Converter High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) System. The award ceremony saw the participation of Power Grid's Executive Director B. Anantha Sarma and Chief General Manager (Corporate Planning) Abhinav Verma.
  • The SKOCK Gold Award 2023 acknowledged the outstanding contributions and technological advancements made by PGCIL in the realm of power transmission and distribution.
  • The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited was incorporated on October 23, 1989 under the Companies Act, 1956.
  • Its original name, which was the 'National Power Transmission Corporation Limited' was changed to 'Power Grid Corporation of India Limited', on October 23, 1992.

Suganthy Sundararaj Honoured With PRSI National Award for Healthcare Contributions

Abdullahi Mire Wins 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award

  • Abdullahi Mire, a Somali refugee, was named the 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award Global Laureate for his work championing the right to education for displaced children. Mire, who grew up in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, has put over 100,000 books in the hands of displaced children and youth in the country. He will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, on December 13, 2023.
  • In addition to the Global Laureate, four regional winners were also named for the 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award:
  • Americas: Elizabeth Moreno Barco from Colombia
  • Middle East & North Africa: Asia Al-Mashreqi from Yemen
  • Asia-Pacific: Abdullah Habib, Sahat Zia Hero, Salim Khan, and Shahida Win from Myanmar
  • Europe: Lena Grochowska and Władysław Grochowski from Poland
  • The UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award was established in 1954 to honour the legacy of Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian scientist, polar explorer, diplomat, and the first High Commissioner for Refugees for the League of Nations. The award is presented annually to an individual or organisation for outstanding service to refugees.

'Drift' By Anthony Chen Bags Prestigious ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal at IFFI 54

  • The collaborative effort of French, British and Greek filmmakers, 'Drift', directed by Anthony Chen, was honoured with the esteemed ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). This emotionally charged film delves into the life of an immigrant woman, Jacqueline, brilliantly portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, as she navigates the harsh realities of human madness. The award was announced during the grand closing ceremony of the festival held in Goa.

ISRO Scientist V. R. Lalithambika Awarded France's Highest Civilian Award

  • V. R. Lalithambika, former Director, Directorate of the Human Spaceflight Programme, ISRO, was conferred the top French civilian honour of Légion d'Honneur for her engagement in space cooperation between France and India.
  • The award was given to her by Ambassador of France to India, Thierry Mathou, on behalf of the French government.
  • Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Légion d'Honneur (the Legion of Honour) is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for outstanding service to France, regardless of the nationality of the recipients.
  • A specialist in advanced launch vehicle technology, Lalithambika, a distinguished scientist of ISRO, has worked extensively on various ISRO rockets, particularly the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  • In 2018, while serving as the Director of the Human Spaceflight Programme, she collaborated closely with the French National Space Agency (Centre national d'études spatiales - CNES) for India's Gaganyaan project.

Free College Education to Girl Students in Haryana with Family Income below Rs. 1.8 lakh

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar made a significant announcement, declaring free education for girls in both government and private colleges within the state.
  • This initiative extends to families with an annual income not exceeding Rs. 1.80 lakh.
  • Furthermore, the state government committed to subsidising half of college fees for girls belonging to families with an income falling between Rs. 1.80 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh.

Filmfare OTT Awards 2023

  • Filmfare OTT Awards 2023 honoured actors, actresses, directors and technicians for their OTT series and web original films. The awards ceremony saw everyone from Alia Bhatt to Sonam Kapoor in attendance. Alia bagged the best actor award in web original film (female) for Darlings, while Rajkummar Rao won best actor (male) award in the critics category for his Netflix film Monica O My Darling.
  • Karishma Tanna and Sonakshi Sinha were awarded the best actor, series (female) in critics category for Scoop and Dahaad, respectively. Meanwhile, Vijay Varma bagged the same award in the male category for Dahaad.
  • Scoop was awarded best series at Filmfare OTT Awards 2023, while Trial by Fire won the trophy for best series in critics category. Sharmila Tagore (Gulmohar) and Sanya Malhotra (Kathal) shared the best actor (female) award in the critics category.
