Indian-Origin Entrepreneur Receives One of Canada's Highest Honours

  • Firdaus Kharas, an India-born entrepreneur and thought leader, was appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honours, for advancing social change through human-centred media.
  • The 2023 list of Order of Canada appointees, unveiled by Governor General Mary Simon, included Kharas among the selected individuals honoured for their extraordinary and sustained dedication to the country across various sectors. The Order of Canada is one of our country's highest honours. It recognises people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to Canada.
  • The Governor General's office announced three new appointments of "companions," the highest rank within the Order of Canada, alongside 15 officers, including one honorary officer, and 59 members. Firdaus Kharas, was acknowledged for his role in advancing social change as a social entrepreneur, humanitarian, and mass communications media producer.

As stated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, the selection of the awardees follows thorough evaluation and recommendations by the Committee, with the final list being compiled by the Government. Poet Sukrita Paul Kumar Wins Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize for 'Salt & Pepper'

  • The renowned Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize named poet-critic Sukrita Paul Kumar as its sixth recipient for her book, 'Salt & Pepper: Selected Poems'. This prestigious award recognises outstanding literary work from around the globe, promoting world peace, literature, art, education, and human rights.
  • Kumar received a cash prize of USD 5,000, a Tagore statue, and a certificate acknowledging her significant contribution to literature.
  • The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize is a literary honour in India conferred annually to published works of Indian authors (residing in India or abroad) in novel, short stories, poetry and drama, originally written in any of Indian official languages and dialects, but translated to English. It was founded in 2018 by US-based independent and non-profit publishing house Maitreya Publishing Foundation (MPF) as a platform for world peace, literature, art, education and human rights. The winners receive USD 10,000 as the prize money along with a Rabindranath Tagore statuette while the shortlisted authors each receive USD 500.

SASTRA Ramanujan Awards Presented Yunqing Tang and Ruixiang Zhang

  • The SASTRA-Ramanujan Awards for 2022 and 2023 were presented, respectively, to Yunqing Tang and Ruixiang Zhang, both mathematicians at the University of California in Berkeley, at the SASTRA campus in Kumbakonam.
  • The award, instituted by SASTRA in 2005, with a cash prize of USD 10,000 and a citation, is presented annually to individuals aged 32 and below, who have made outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics. The awards are presented on the birthday of Ramanujan.

  • Sahitya Akademi, announced its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023 in 24 languages. 9 books of poetry, 6 of novels, 5 of short stories, 3 Essays and 1 Literary Study won the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023.
