President Droupadi Murmu Confers 'Khel Ratna' and 'Arjuna' Award

  • India's best-performing athletes were conferred with the national sports awards by President Droupadi Murmu in a regal ceremony where cricketer Mohammed Shami and para archer Sheetal Devi walked in to a rapturous applause at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
  • Shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were chosen for the coveted Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award for a breakout 2023, during which they won their maiden Asian Games gold, a first for India in badminton, while also clinching the Asian Championships title and the Indonesia Open Super 1000 title.

Shrikant Shinde, Sukanta Majumdar among 5 MPs Selected for Sansad Ratna Awards

  • Five Lok Sabha members, including the BJP's Sukanta Majumdar and Shiv Sena's Shrikant Eknath Shinde, were selected for the Sansad Ratna Awards this year, its organisers announced.
  • The BJP's Sudheer Gupta, NCP's Amol Ramsing Kolhe and Congress' Kuldeep Rai Sharma are the other three MPs selected for the awards to be presented at a function in the national capital on February 17, 2024.
  • The Sansad Ratna Awards are presented annually to the top-performing parliamentarians based on their performance, while the Sansad Maha Ratna Awards are presented once in five years for consistency in performance during the term of the Lok Sabha.
  • Chennai-based non-profit charitable trust Prime Point Foundation instituted these honours at the instance of former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam, who himself inaugurated the first award event in 2010 in Chennai.

SVAMITVA Scheme Wins Best Innovation Award

  • The Ministry of Panchayati Raj participated in the Innovation Sandbox presentation and showcased the "Digital Transformation Initiatives in Land Governance through SVAMITVA Scheme" detailing the processes followed by States to digitalise land governance systems transparently and efficiently. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj was conferred with the prestigious 1st Prize in the Innovation Sandbox presentation for "Digital Transformation Initiatives in Land Governance through SVAMITVA Scheme" at the second annual three-day "Public Policy Dialogues" Conclave of the Bharti Institute of Public Policy (BIPP), Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad in January 2024.
  • SVAMITVA Scheme of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj is a Central Sector Scheme that has significantly contributed to the empowerment of rural communities in India. By leveraging cutting-edge drone surveys and GIS mapping technology, the scheme ensures accurate demarcation of land parcels, thereby mitigating disputes and providing individuals with property records of rights i.e. SVAMITVA Property Cards, thereby facilitating monetisation of properties, enabling bank loans and comprehensive village-level planning.
  • It was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 24, 2020.

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Announces 'Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar' 2023

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports unveiled the recipients of the prestigious 'Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar'for the year 2023. These awards are a testament to the commendable contributions made by corporate entities, Sports Control Boards, NGOs, and sports bodies at the State and National levels towards the promotion and development of sports in India.
  • The Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar is a sports honour of the Republic of India. The name of the award in Hindi translates to National Sports Promotion Award. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • The award was started in 2009 and the guidelines were revised in 2015. Since the revision, entities in four categories are awarded: Identification and nurturing of budding and young talent, encouragement to sports through corporate social responsibility, employment of sportspersons and sports welfare measures, and sports for development.
  • As of 2020, the award comprises 'a citation and a trophy in each of the categories.

Golden Globes 2024

  • The epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer dominated the Golden Globes 2024 and won several major awards, including Best Picture (Drama). While Christopher Nolan bagged the award for Best Director – Motion Picture, Cillian Murphy was named Best Male Actor – Motion Picture – Drama and Robert Downey Jr best supporting actor in a movie. Oppenheimer also bagged the award for Best Score – Motion Picture.

Hero MotoCorp's Facility Wins CII National Award for Water Management

  • Hero MotoCorp's manufacturing facility in Gurugram bagged the CII National Award for Excellence in Water Management, securing the top position in the 'Within the Fence' category. The company is making strides towards its goal of being 500 per cent water positive by 2025. Presently, the company is saving nearly 3.8 million kiloliters of water annually.
  • This recognition underscores the company's commitment to reducing water consumption and wastage within its own premises.

Prof B. R. Kamboj Honoured with M. S. Swaminathan Award

  • Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University's Vice Chancellor Prof. B. R. Kamboj was honoured with the prestigious M. S. Swaminathan Award in recognition of his contributions as a scientist and extension specialist in the field of agronomy. Thawar Chand Gehlot, the Governor of Karnataka, presented him this award.
  • M.S. Swaminathan Award was instituted in 2004 with the objective to recognize life time contributions of eminent persons who have made global impact in the field of agriculture, including food security and sustainability of agriculture in India.

Former PAU Scientist Honoured

  • S. S. Dhaliwal, an honorary member of International Zinc Association (IZA) and former principal soil chemist-cum-in-charge of All India Coordinated Research Project on Micronutrients Research in Soil and Plants (AICRP-MRSP) at the department of soil science, PAU, Ludhiana was conferred with 'Eminent Scientist Award' for his research on micronutrients in soil and biofortification of micronutrient minerals in field crops.
  • The award consisted of a memento and an appreciation certificate for research on micronutrients in soil and bio-fortification micronutrient minerals in field crops associated with the development of technology for the scientific research fraternity and farmers of Punjab.
