Autistic Pride Day

  • Autistic Pride Day is celebrated on June 18 every year across the world to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and to move society away from discrimination and stigma associated with the condition. A significant aspect of Autistic Pride Day is that it is run by people with autism. The day aims to spread the message that those with autism are not diseased but different from others.
  • Autistic Pride Day was first observed by the online community Aspies for Freedom (AFF) in 2005 to give autistic people the opportunity to celebrate their neurodiversity and differences. A number of events are organised to mark the day and autistic people and families share their success stories. Over the years, the day gained popularity and grew into a global event that is extensively celebrated both online and offline. Meetings, days out, picnics, walks and week-long gatherings are held to celebrate Autistic Pride Day.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

  • The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed on June 17 each year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day offers a chance to recognize that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels.
  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought through its resolution A/RES/49/115 which was adopted in December 1994.

International Day of Family Remittances

  • The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is a universally-recognized observance adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and celebrated every year on June 16. The Day recognizes the contribution of over 200 million migrants to improve the lives of their 800 million family members back home, and to create a future of hope for their children. Half of these flows go to rural areas, where poverty and hunger are concentrated, and where remittances count the most.
  • The history of International Day of Family Remittances dates back to 2008. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Bank together marked the first-ever International Day of Family Remittances on June 16, 2008, with the aim of highlighting the role of migrant workers and that of their remittances in improving the economy of developing countries. Different financial organisations, policymakers, and other stakeholders, participated in the event, and discussed the positive impact of remittances on the economic development of countries worldwide.
  • The day received global recognition and support by various organisations and finally on June 16, 2015 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution and declared June 16 as official International Day of Family Remittances.
  • According to the United Nations, the theme of International Day of Family Remittances 2023 is 'Digital remittances towards financial inclusion and cost reduction'.

World Wind Day

  • World Wind Day or Global Wind Day is a worldwide event which falls on June 15 every year. It is a day for discovering wind energy, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth.
  • The first Wind Day was organised in 2007 by European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). In 2009, the European Wind Energy Association (Wind Europe) and Global Wind Energy Council collaborated to make Wind Day a global event. The day acknowledges the power of the wind and raises awareness about its potential as a sustainable resource.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually on June 15 to raise awareness about the abuse and neglect experienced by older adults. This day aims to promote understanding of the importance of preventing elder abuse and supporting the rights and well-being of older people.
  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was officially recognised and established by the United Nations General Assembly on June 15, 2011 however, the history of raising awareness about elder abuse predates this specific observance. The origins of WEAAD can be traced back to the International Plan of Action adopted at the First World Assembly on Aging, held in Vienna, Austria, in 1982 and this plan emphasised the need to protect older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation and called upon governments and societies to address the issue of elder abuse and promote the well-being of older people.
  • The theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2023 is 'Closing the Circle: Addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Older Age Policy, Law and Evidence-based Responses'.

World Blood Donor Day

  • Every year countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) on June 14. The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
  • In 2004 World Blood Donor Day was first distinguished by the WHO. In the 58th World Health Assembly, 2005 it was declared as an annual global event to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation.
  • WBDD also coincides with the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, who was a Nobel Prize winner for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.
  • The theme of the World Blood Donor Day 2023 is 'Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often'.

Mumbai Observes No Honking Day

  • Mumbai, which is known for its bustling streets, vibrant culture, and stunning beaches, is also infamous for its traffic jams and noise pollution created by motorists.
  • To curb the noise pollution in the city, the Mumbai traffic police observed 'No Honking Day' on June 14.
  • As per the Mumbai traffic police, unnecessary honking causes noise pollution in the environment and also adversely affects human health.
  • The Mumbai Traffic Police urge the motorists to positively respond to 'No Honking Day' by not using the horns of their vehicles. Motorists are advised to ensure that the horns of their vehicles are as per the guidelines laid down in Rule No. 119 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules of 1989.
