World Asteroid Day

World Asteroid Day is observed every year on June 30.
The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution A/RES/71/90 in December 2016, designating June 30 as International Asteroid Day. The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the Tunguska asteroid's impact over Siberia, Russia on June 30, 1908. The Association of Space Explorers submitted the proposal to observe the day, which was then approved by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
World Asteroid Day is dedicated to preparing the planet for an asteroid impact. Another goal for the day is to speed up the discovery of asteroids. Scientists think that only a small percentage of asteroids have been detected in space thus far, with hundreds more still to be discovered.

International Day of Parliamentarism

Every year, June 30 marks the celebration of the International Day of Parliamentarism, a day dedicated to commemorating the formation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The IPU was established with the noble objective of promoting democratic governance, fostering accountability, and encouraging collaboration among national parliaments. This year (2023), the International Day of Parliamentarism marked its 134th anniversary.
The International Day of Parliamentarism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to acknowledge the importance of parliamentary institutions. This date holds historical importance as it marks the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889. The IPU was founded through the collaborative efforts of two visionary individuals, William Randal Cremer from England and Frederic Passy from France. Despite their different social backgrounds, both shared a common belief in resolving international conflicts through peaceful negotiation.
The theme for International Day of Parliamentarism 2023 was 'Parliaments for the Planet.'

International Day of the Tropics

International Day of the Tropics is observed annually on June 29. Its purpose is to acknowledge the extraordinary variety of the tropics while shedding more light on the distinctive challenges and opportunities that are faced by tropical areas. To raise awareness about the specific challenges of tropical countries at all levels, and the implications and issues affecting the world's tropical regions, the International Day of the Tropics is observed on June 29 all across the globe.
On June 14, 2016 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that declared June 29 as the International Day of the Tropics. The UN chose the date June 29 to mark the anniversary of the inaugural 'State of Tropics Report'. The report was launched in 2014 by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from Myanmar (Burma).

National Statistics Day

National Statistics Day is celebrated on June 29 every year to recognize the contributions of P. C. Mahanalobis.
Indian government designated June 29 as National Statistics Day in recognition of the contributions made by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics and economic planning on June 5, 2007. The first National Statistics Day was celebrated on June 29, 2007 and it has been celebrated on the same day since then.
Professor Mahalanobis was part of the first planning commission of India and was instrumental in establishing the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1931.
The theme of National Statistics Day, 2023 was 'Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals'.

World MSME Day

World Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Day or World MSME Day is observed every year on June 27 all over the world to highlight the significance of MSMEs and how they play a crucial role in being the backbone of the country's economy.
The United Nations (UN) designated June 27 as Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day through a resolution passed in the UN General Assembly in April 2017.
In May 2017, a program titled 'Enhancing National Capacities for Unleashing Full Potentials of MSMEs in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Developing Countries' was launched.
It has been funded by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund of the United Nations Peace and Development Fund.
The theme for World MSME Day 2023 was 'Building a Stronger Future Together', which was also used by the Global Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated on June 26. According to the United Nations, torture exists in all parts of the world, despite the total ban under international law. According to all relevant instruments, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment generally known as the Torture Agreement, entered into force on June 26, 1987. This was a step towards recognising that torture is universally banned. Ten years later, on June 26, 1997, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated the day as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture in order to help survivors and raise awareness about its effects.
The primary goal of this day is to completely abolish this inhuman act in all its forms. On June 26, 1998, the United Nations called for all governments, stakeholders, and members of global society to take action against perpetrators across the globe.

Day of the Seafarer

The Day of the Seafarer is a special day dedicated to all those who work closely with salt water, including Coast Guards, Navies, fishermen, marine biologists, and cruise ship captains. It commemorates the first recorded sea voyage around 3200 BCE, which was sponsored by the Egyptian Pharaoh Snefru, known for building several pyramids. This annual event, observed on June 25, aims to acknowledge the crucial role played by seafarers in international trade, the global economy, and society as a whole. Furthermore, it emphasizes their significant efforts in safeguarding the marine environment.
The Day of the Seafarer was established through a resolution passed during the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila, where the revised STCW Convention was adopted. This day, observed on June 25, aims to acknowledge and appreciate the exceptional contribution made by seafarers worldwide to international maritime trade, the global economy, and society as a whole. The resolution encourages governments, shipping organizations, companies, ship-owners, and other relevant parties to actively promote and appropriately celebrate this significant day. The United Nations recognizes the Day of the Seafarer as an official observance day.
