Asian Games 2023: Tajinderpal Singh Toor Wins Shot Put Gold

At the Hangzhou Asian Games, Tajinderpal Singh Toor of India secured a gold medal in men's shot put, making him the fourth Indian shot putter in history to successfully retain his Asian Games gold.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor became the fourth Indian shot putter to successfully defend his Asian Games gold, following the achievements of Parduman Singh Brar, Joginder Singh, and Bahadur Singh Chouhan, who had previously accomplished this feat.
Toor saved his best for last, unleashing a monumental 20.36-meter throw in his sixth and final attempt, which won him the gold.

Abhay Singh Wins 2-1 against Pakistan's Noor Zaman in Squash

As top seed, Abhay Singh won the war of attrition against Noor Zaman for the highest prize of his career. India reclaimed the Asian Games squash gold medal with a 2-1 victory against Pakistan.
Before the event began, the Indian men's team was projected to return to the top of the podium after an eight-year absence, with Malaysia and Pakistan, the sport's former powerhouses, as its major competitors.
On their route to victory, the Saurav Ghosal-led team defeated both opponents.

Vithya Ramraj Equals PT Usha's Record

Indian hurdler Vithya Ramraj clocked a personal best of 55.42 seconds in the women's 400 m hurdles heats, securing her direct qualification for the final. This achievement was particularly significant as it equalled the national record set by Indian track and field legend P. T. Usha, a record that has stood unbroken for nearly four decades.

Asian Games 2023: Avinash Sable Wins Gold in Men's 3000 m Steeplechase

The Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, witnessed a historic moment as Avinash Sable, the Indian steeplechase sensation, secured a gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase event. This remarkable achievement not only made Avinash Sable the first Indian man to clinch gold in this event but also marked the breaking of the previous Asian Games record.
He clocked an impressive time of 8 minutes and 19.50 seconds, surpassing the record set by Iran's Hossein Keyhani in the Asian Games 2018, which stood at 8 minutes and 22.79 seconds.

Indian-origin Shanti Pereira Wins Singapore's First Gold in Asian Games Athletics in 49 Years

Singapore celebrated its first athletics gold win in 49 years at the Asian Games with its Indian-origin sprinter Shanti Pereira winning the women's 200 m final in Hangzhou, China.
Pereira clocked 23.03 seconds to finish the race at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. This is the first athletics gold medal for the city-state since 1974, when sprinter Chee Swee Lee had won the women's 400 m race.
China's Li Yuting took the silver with 23.28 seconds and Bahrain's Edidiong Ofonime Odiong came third with 23.48 seconds.

Nikhat Zareen Secures Olympic Quota, Assured of Medal at Asian Games

Two-time world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen secured a Paris Olympics berth and assured herself of a medal as she cantered to the 50 kg semi-finals of the Asian Games.
Fighting in her third bout of the tournament, Nikhat needed less than three minutes to notch a facile RSC (referee stops contest) win over Nassar Hanan of Jordan in the quarter-final.
The reigning Commonwealth Games champion set the tone of the bout early on with a sharp jab. Nikhat continued to dominate with a flurry of accurate combination punches.
Such was her domination that the referee was forced to give the Jordanian pugilist three standing counts before calling off the contest.

Shuttlers End Team Medal Drought

India thrashed lowly Nepal 3-0 in the quarter-finals to secure a historic medal after 37 years in the men's team badminton event at the Asian Games.
Lakshya Sen defeated Prince Dahal 21-5 21-8 before Kidambi Srikanth beat Sunil Joshi 21-4 21-13. Mithun Manjunath then beat Bishnu Katuwal 21-2 21-17 to clinch the tie. The men, who are assured of at least a bronze medal, will take on three-time champions South Korea in the semi-finals.

Kiran Baliyan Ends India's 72-year Wait for a Women's Shot Put Medal

Kiran Baliyan became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in shot put event in 72 years as she picked up a bronze on the opening day of competitions at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Baliyan threw to a distance of 17.36 m in her third attempt to finish third behind the Chinese duo of reigning Olympic champion Lijiao Gong and Jiayuan Song. They were also the only three athletes to cross the 17 m mark, Gong taking gold with a massive 19.58 m throw.

IPL 2024: Bobat is Royal Challengers Bangalore's New Director of Cricket

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) announced Mo Bobat as the new director of cricket of the franchise. Bobat would replaced New Zealand's Mike Hesson, who was RCB's helm of affairs since 2019.
Bobat and RCB head coach Andy Flower have previously worked together with England, and now, coming together again, they will look to recreate glorious days at RCB. However, it remains to be seen whether these changes will end the trophy drought of 16 years for the most-followed IPL franchise RCB.

Palak, Esha Gold-silver in 10m air Pistol Makes it a Historic Day for India at Asian Games

Two teenaged dreamy-eyed shooters, Palak Gulia and Esha Singh, set ablaze the shooting range by powering to a gold-silver finish in 10m air pistol event for India at the Asian Games.
In one of the most trailblazing efforts seen by Indian shooters, the duo challenged each other for the top podium finish until Palak clinched the gold medal and Esha the silver to swell the country's tally in the sport to 17 -- 6 of them gold.
Pakistan's Talat Kishmala settled for a bronze after giving a tough fight to Esha.
This is the first major individual medal for Palak in an international competition after she came on the shooting scene just last year. She shot 242.1 in the finals for an Asian Games record.

Asian Games 2023: Indian Men's Football Team Knocked Out

The Indian football team led by Sunil Chhetri was knocked out of the Asian Games after a 2-0 loss against Saudi Arabia.
India had lined up their time defensively with two blocks of four and the trick paid off in the first half of the match. However, a low defensive block meant that Indian team was not able to execute counter-attacks properly, with Sunil Chhetri and Gurkirat Singh getting crowded out by the Saudi defenders.

India's Naorem Roshibina Devi Wins Silver Medal

India's Naorem Roshibina Devi won the silver medal in the women's 60 kg sanda wushu event at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou.
In the final, Naorem Roshibina Devi lost to China's Wu Xiaowei 2-0 to settle for the second spot on the podium. It was the Indian's second Asian Games medal in successive editions. She won bronze at the 2018 Games in Jakarta.
Earlier Naorem Roshibina Devi defeated Kazakhstan's Aiman Karshyga by WPD (winner by point difference) in the quarter-finals to confirm a medal. She triumphed over Vietnam's Thi Thu Thuy Nguyen 2-0 in the semi-finals to enter the gold medal match.

Leander Paes Becomes First Asian Man to be Nominated for International Tennis Hall of Fame

Multiple Grand Slam winner Leander Paes emerged as the first Asian man to be nominated for the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF) in the player category.
Paes was one of the six nominees announced for the Class of 2024. He will be competing with Cara Black, Ana Ivanovic, Carlos Moya, Daniel Nestor and Flavia Pennetta in the Player Category.
Li Na, the Chinese player who won the women's singles title at Australian Open and French Open, became the first Asian player to get nominated to the ITHF in 2019.
Paes is a winner of 18 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles, besides being a former doubles world No. 1.
