Asian Games 2023, Hockey: India Men's Team Wins Gold, Secures Paris Olympics Quota

India beat Japan 5-1 in the Asian Games 2023 men's hockey final at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium in Hangzhou, the People's Republic of China to win the gold medal. With the win, the Indian men's hockey team also secured a berth at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This was the Indian men's hockey team's fourth gold medal at the Asian Games after the 1966 and 1988 editions in Bangkok and Incheon 2014.

Asian Games 2023 Concludes

The Asian Games 2023 medal tally is a table that shows the number of medals won by each country at the 19th Asian Games, which were held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8 2023. The table is sorted by the number of gold medals won, followed by the number of silver medals won, and then the number of bronze medals won.
With an astounding haul of 107 medals, India's 655 representatives surpassed their own previous record set in Jakarta 2018.

Asian Games: Indian Duo Satwik-Chirag Wins Historic Doubles Gold

Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty earned India's first-ever badminton gold medal at the Asian Games with a straight-game win over South Korea's Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho.
World number 3 Satwik and Chirag, who had become the first Indians to win the Asian Championships in 58 years in March 2023, extended their sensational run with a 21-18 21-16 win over Choi and Kim, ranked 15th.
It was also India's first medal in men's doubles in 41 years since Leroy D'sa and Pradeep Gandhe won a bronze in 1982 edition.

Highest World Cup Total, Fastest Hundred

South Africa laid down an early marker in their Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against Sri Lanka in New Delhi, posting a record total of 428 for 5 in 50 overs. Hundreds from Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen helped the Proteas decimate the Sri Lankan bowling line-up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
South Africa broke a series of records during their whirlwind innings after Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to field on a hot day in the capital city.
South Africa posted the highest total in a World Cup match, going past Australia's 417 for 6 against Afghanistan in Perth in 2015.
The highest total was possible as three of their batters looked in complete control of the Sri Lankan bowling attack. Standing out was Aiden Markram, who walked into the middle in the 31st over and then went on to hit the fastest-ever hundred in a World Cup match.
Markram got to his hundred in just 49 balls, breaking Kevin O'Brien's record of 50 balls in 2011 against England.
This was also the first time in a World Cup match where 3 batters from a team scored hundreds in an innings. It is only the 4th instance in ODI cricket.

Prannoy Signs Off with Maiden Asian Games Bronze

H. S. Prannoy signed off with an Asian Games bronze, India's first medal in men's singles in 41 years, after going down in straight games to reigning All England champion, China's Li Shi Feng, in the semi-finals at the Asian Games.
The World No.7 Indian, who played with a back niggle, committed too many unforced errors and went down 16-21, 9-21 against the home favourite and world No. 8 Li.
It was India's second medal in men's singles since Syed Modi claimed a bronze in the 1982 edition in New Delhi.

Asian Games: Bajrang Punia Thrashed by Iran's Rahman, to Fight for Bronze

Returning to competitive wrestling after a one-year gap, an under-pressure Bajrang Punia was routed 1-8 by Iran's Rahman Amouzadkhalili in the semi-finals but he stayed in contention for a bronze medal along with compatriot Aman Sehrawat.

Men's 4x400m Relay Team Wins Gold Medal

Indian quartet of Anas Muhammed Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh sealed the gold for India in the men's 4x400m relay with a timing of 3:01.58.
Indian quartet of Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan also claimed a silver in women's 4x400m relay.
The India quartet came up with an effort of 3:27.85 to finish second, while Bahrain dished out a Games record effort of 3:27:65 to claim the top position, while Sri Lanka won the bronze with a timing of 3:30:88.

Sunil Kumar Wins India's First Greco Roman Medal at Asian Games Since 2010

Sunil Kumar won India's first Greco Roman medal at the Asian Games in 13 years, bagging a bronze in the 87kg category even as three of his compatriots exited the tournament in Hangzhou.
India had won two medals in Greco Roman in the Guangzhou edition with Ravinder Singh (60 kg) and Sunil Kumar Rana (66 kg) winning a bronze each in 2010.

Neeraj Chopra Wins Men's Gold in Javelin Throw

India's Neeraj Chopra defended his Asian Games javelin throw title in Hangzhou with a best effort of 88.88 metres.
Chopra's compatriot Kishore Kumar Jena gave him a run for the gold medal but ended just short at 87.54 metres and claimed the silver medal.
Japan's Roderick Genki Dean took the bronze with an 82.68 m mark.

Google Doodle Celebrates Opening of Cricket World Cup 2023

Google Doodle celebrated the opening day of the International Cricket Council Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Doodle featured two animated ducks running between the wickets in a stadium, with spectators in the background. This is the 13th edition since its inception in 1975.
Teams from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka are participating this year (2023).

Dipika Pallikal, Harinder Pal Sandhu won the gold medal in mixed doubles squash event defeating Malaysian pair by 2-0 in the final. Dipika and Harinder eked out a 11-10 11-10 win over Malaysian duo of Aifa Binti Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal in a tense 35 minute final to fetch India's second gold medal in squash in Hangzhou.

FIFA World Cup 2030 to be Hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, Three Games in S. America

Morocco, Spain and Portugal were named hosts of the 2030 football World Cup, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host the opening matches to mark the tournament's centenary, world football body FIFA announced.
This decision by FIFA marks the first time the World Cup will be staged across three continents and six countries.
The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the sole candidacy will be the combined bid of Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, which will host the event in 2030 and qualify automatically from the existing slot allocation.
The inaugural World Cup in 1930 was held in Uruguay and won by the hosts after they defeated Argentina in the final in Montevideo.

Asian Games 2023, Annu Rani Wins Gold in Women's Javelin Throw

India's Annu Rani bagged gold in women's javelin throw at Asian Games. Annu touched 62.92 m, which was her season's best throw and topped the chart.
She became the first Indian woman to win a javelin gold in Asian Games history.
Sri Lanka's Nadeesha Dilhan Lekamge Hatarabage, with 61.57 metres throw, and China's Huihui Lyu, with 61.29 metres throw, won silver and bronze, respectively.
