Jadavpur University VC Appointed President of AIU

The Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das was appointed as the president of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Das said that he will take up the issue of executing the new education policy's (NEP) salient features, raising central funding for state varsities involved in important research activities, and work on taking the standards of Indian universities to global levels.
Das, an eminent historian, was appointed the vice-president of AIU a year ago.
Das said that it is a great responsibility and a matter of pride, more because after 40 years someone from West Bengal has taken over the post at the AIU.

Parliamentary Panel: Let 'Deemed Universities' be known as 'Universities'

A Parliamentary committee urged the government to actively consider allowing deemed universities in the country to use the term 'university' to avoid confusion abroad as most foreign countries do not use such a nomenclature.
The Committee recommends that the Government give an active consideration to the demand that deemed universities be allowed to use the term 'university' by amending Clause 23 of the UGC Act, 1956 which states that no institution, other than a university established or incorporated by a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act is entitled to use the word 'University', as the term 'deemed university' creates a lot of confusion in foreign countries as there is no concept of deemed university in many parts of the world.

UGC May Allow Part-time PhD for Working Professionals

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is exploring the possibility of allowing part-time PhD programmes for working professionals in tune with the system followed by the IITs.
UGC vice-chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said that part-time PhD programmes are also offered by prestigious universities across the world.
The UGC had in March notified the draft UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. The provision on part-time PhD programmes is likely to find a place in the regulations which are being finalised.

CBSE Launches Pariksha Sangam; One-stop Solution for CBSE Students & Administrators

CBSE Board launched a portal named 'Pariksha Sangam' to connect students, school regional offices and CBSE board headquarters to integrate examination-related processes. A single window will from now be available for board examination results, sample papers, and other details.
CBSE's pariksha sangam portal can be accessed at 'parikshasangam.cbse.gov.in'. The portal is divided into three parts, namely- Schools (Ganga), Regional Offices (Yamuna) and Head Office (Saraswati).

Prof. Yogesh M Joshi First Indian to Become Fellow of the Society of Rheology

IIT Kanpur professor Yogesh M. Joshi from the Department of Chemical Engineering was elected as one of the Fellows of the Society of Rheology, 2022. He is the first Indian to be selected for this prestigious honour.
The Society of Rheology Fellowship is a prestigious status that "status recognises a history of distinguished scientific achievement, a significant technological accomplishment, and/or outstanding scholarship in the field of Rheology." (The Society of Rheology).
Prof. Joshi has been awarded several key scientific awards. In 2015, he was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Engineering Sciences by the Government of India, and Academy excellence award of the Defense Research and Development Organization 2019.
In 2016, he was elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and in 2017, as a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India.

IIT-Mandi Launches MBA in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi launched an MBA program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The two-year, full-time master's program begins in the Fall Semester of 2022, the institute announced. It will integrate contemporary management concepts, soft skills for developing individuals, and a wide range of data science tools.
This program differs from other technology-oriented programs (like BTech, MTech/ MS) by focusing on the integration of data science and artificial intelligence into various business and management domains, as well as a strong emphasis on managerial decision-making, claimed IIT-Mandi.

UN Projected India's Urban Population to be 675 Million in 2035

According to a UN report, India's urban population is expected to reach 675 million in 2035, ranking second only to China's urban population of one billion people. The report also noted that after the Covid-19 pandemic, the world's urban population is once again on track to increase by another 2.2 billion people by the year 2050.
According to the World Cities Report 2022 by UN-Habitat, the pandemic only momentarily slowed down urbanization's rapid pace.
According to the report, India's urban population is expected to reach 675,456,000 in 2035, up from 483,099,000 in 2020, 542,743,000 in 2025, and 607,342,000 in 2030. 43.2 percent of India's population will be living in urban areas by the middle of the year in 2035.
The report underlined the need to address urban inequality and climate change, citing "heatwaves in Delhi" and Mumbai's "overcrowded slums."

Punjab Assembly Passes Resolution against Any Bid to Change 'Nature' of Panjab University

The Punjab assembly passed a resolution recommending the state government to urge the Centre not to alter the "status" of Panjab University. However, the BJP, with its two MLAs, Ashwani Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan, opposed it, asking whether there was actually a proposal to change the status of the institution into a central university.
The resolution was moved by Punjab Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who said Punjab had a right over the Panjab University and the state government would not allow the Centre to change its nature and character."Panjab University is our heritage, and it is a matter of identity for us," the minister said.

IIT Delhi Collaborates with DBSE to Design Robotics and Automation Curriculum

IIT Delhi will design a curriculum to train students in the different aspects of Robotics and Automation that will enable them to pursue higher education and diverse career pathways in the field. In this regard, the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) signed an MoU with I-Hub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC), the Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Delhi to design a Robotics and Automation curriculum for the Schools of Specialized Excellence (SoSE) under the Delhi government.
IHFC will collaborate with industry partners and players to create an industry-relevant curriculum that will render SoSE students employable in aspirational job roles after four years of specialised study in the domain of Robotics and Automation.
