IIT-Madras in Talks to Set Up Campus in Tanzania

An offshore campus of IIT Madras in Tanzania is among the options on the government's table as it works on a plan to ensure the country's premier engineering institutes have a presence on the world map.
The recommendations made in a draft report prepared by a 16-member committee, headed by IIT Council standing committee chairperson Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, are acting as a possible roadmap for the expansion plans.
IIT Madras Director Prof V. Kamakoti said that apart from Tanzania and other African countries, the institute also received requests from Sri Lanka and Nepal for campuses to offer courses in emerging areas such as data sciences and artificial intelligence as well as energy systems.

Delhi University Likely to Start Certificate Course on Patent Laws

The Delhi University is planning to start a certificate course on patent laws to help students to make their research a "tangible" product and give them basic knowledge about filing for patents.
This would be the first time that such a course would be offered at the varsity.
Patent laws are taught as a part of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) paper at the Delhi University's Law Faculty, and some science courses in the varsity also include a chapter on the topic.
The varsity has constituted a committee for framing the syllabus and other modalities for a course on patent laws.

Bengaluru Gets India's 'First-of-its-kind' Brain Health Clinic

Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar inaugurated India's first brain health clinic under the Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (Ka-BHI) at Jayanagar General Hospital.
Sudhakar said two more such centres will come up in Chikkaballapura and Kolar districts, in association with NIMHANS.
Cricketer and Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (Ka-Bhi) ambassador Robin Uthappa, who took part in the event, shared his struggle with mental health as a youngster.

WHO Declares Monkeypox a Global Emergency

The World Health Organisation declared the global monkeypox outbreak a 'public health emergency of international concern' (PHEIC), one step below that of a 'pandemic.'
A PHEIC, according to the WHO, constitutes an extraordinary event, which constitutes a public health risk to other States through the international spread, and which potentially requires a coordinated international response.
The latest decision followed a meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee to discuss the monkeypox outbreak in several countries. It is this Committee of the WHO that decides on the seriousness of a public health crisis.

UGC Reforms Distance Learning Guidelines to Intensify Foreign Students' Enrolment

The University Grants Commission (UGC) amended the Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programme guidelines, paving way for foreign students to enrol at Indian universities with ease. This amendment would allow international students with expired passports to enrol at Indian universities through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Earlier, international students had to mandatorily produce their passport for identification to enrol themselves with any Indian university. As a result, many applications were rejected due to either non-submission of passports or submission of expired passport.
However, this amendment would only be applicable to those international students who enrol themselves on e-VidyaBharati Portal and are admitted through MEA. Such students will be exempted from the mandatory requirement of passport and can produce any 'national Identity with photograph' of their country for enrolment purposes.

India-UK Ink Agreement for Mutual Recognition of Educational Degrees

India and the United Kingdom inked a pact for mutual recognition of educational degrees of students of bachelor, masters and doctoral courses. Indian senior secondary school or pre-university certificates would also be considered for entry into UK's higher education institutions, enabling mobility of students.
Now onwards, UK degrees would be recognised as equivalent to Indian degrees. You can take a degree there (in the UK) and would be eligible for employment in India.
However, professional degrees such as medicine, pharmacy, engineering, architecture will not be covered under the pact.
Both sides also signed two memorandums of understandings (MoUs) on mutual recognition of educational qualifications, including maritime education and a framework agreement on healthcare workforce. These agreements are part of the commitments made by both parties under the Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) launched in May 2021.

CUET PHASE-1 Records 76% Attendance; Maximum Students from UP, Bihar

The first phase of the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate admissions or CUET-UG, which was concluded, recorded 76.4% attendance.
The exam is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in two phases — phase 1 in July and phase 2 in August. The second phase will begin from August 4 and will continue until August 20. The NTA will issue admit cards for the second phase on July 31.
According to the NTA data, of the 2,50,495 candidates allotted slots in phase one, 1,91,586 appeared in the exam. Of them, maximum candidates were from Uttar Pradesh (49,915), followed by Bihar (20,840), Madhya Pradesh (19,032), Delhi (16,885) and Rajasthan (14,982).
In terms of day-wise data of four days on which the exam was conducted in phase one –July 15, 16, 19 and 20– maximum attendance was recorded on day third, i.e. 79% and minimum on day one, i.e. 72.9%.

In a First, IIM Raipur Admits more Girls than Boys in PG Management Programme

In a first, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur in Chhattisgarh has admitted more girls than boys to its postgraduate management course for the 2022-24 academic session.
According to IIM Raipur's media coordinator Vishal Meena, as many as 205 girls were admitted to the institute's flagship management programme as against 125 boys.
Of the students enrolled for the two-year course in the current academic session, 62 per cent were girls and 38 per cent boys.
This was a marked increase as in the previous academic session 2021-23, 120 girls had been admitted as against 146 boys.

Jamia Hamdard Best Pharmacy College in India: NIRF Rankings 2022

In the NIRF Rankings 2022 Jamia Hamdard once again took the top rank in the pharmacy category followed by National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad at second place.
Jamia Hamdard has maintained its position as India's premier pharmacy college. In the years 2021 and 2020 it secured the first ranking among all other pharmacy colleges in the country.

Delhi's Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute Gets First Indigenously Developed Surgical Robotic System, ...

Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center (RGCI), New Delhi got its first-ever made-in-India Surgical Robotic System, SSI-Mantra developed by med-tech start-up SS Innovations. Robotic cardiac surgeon Dr. Sudhir P. Srivastava and creator of SSI Mantra, along with Dr. Sudhir Rawal, Medical Director, RGCI announced the official launch and acquisition of the first model of the indigenous surgical robotic system.
The Gurugram-based company claims that it is cheaper, more advanced, and more efficient than the US FDA-approved Da Vinci system which was approved for use in India in 2000.

NLSIU is India's Top Law College

The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru retained the top position in the National Institutional Ranking (NIRF) 2022.
Meanwhile, National Law University, New Delhi remained the second-best institute in the rankings, the third position was taken by Symbiosis Law School, Pune, which significantly improved its position of ninth place last year. Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad slipped one position from third last year to fourth this year.
