Supreme Court Issues Notice over Vacancies in National Human Rights Commission

  • The Supreme Court issued notice on a petition regarding three vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
  • The Bench of Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justice P. S. Narasimha passed the order on a petition filed by Radhakanta Tripathy.
  • The petitioner-in-person contended that there were three vacancies in the Commission.
  • These included: (1) Judicial Member, who has to be a Judge or a former Judge of the Supreme Court; Judicial Member, who is or was a Chief Justice of the High Court; and A woman member.

Maharashtra Government Announces Post-retirement Allowance of Rs. 20,000 for High Court Judges

  • Maharashtra government decided to provide post-retirement benefits and allowances to the judges of the Bombay High Court.
  • The monetary allowance of Rs. 20,000 will be provided for housekeeping, chauffeur as well as telephone expenses to retired judges and Chief Justices of the Bombay High Court.
  • Out of the Rs. 20,000, Rs. 14,000 was cut out to hire one domestic help and a chauffeur and Rs. 6,000 for telephone expenses.
  • Notably, the benefits shall extend to surviving spouses of the retired Judges as well.
  • This allowance is an additional benefit to the retirement benefits granted by the Union Law Ministry which includes pension amount, leave encashment, death-cum-retirement gratuity.

Supreme Court Dismisses Petitions Seeking Reclassification of Caste System, Phasing Out of Reserv...

  • The Supreme Court dismissed two public interest litigations, which sought directions to gradually phase out the current reservation system, besides reclassification of the current caste system prevalent in the country.
  • Terming the petitions as 'frivolous' and an abuse of the process of the court, the Bench of Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justice P. S. Narasimha imposed a cost of Rs. 25,000 each on the petitioner. Both the petitions were filed by Advocate Sachin Gupta.

Karnataka Government Notifies Appointment of Five Additional Advocate Generals

  • The Karnataka government notified the appointment of five Additional Advocate Generals (AAGs) to the Supreme Court and to conduct the state government's cases before the top court.
  • Further, the State government also notified the appointment of fifteen AAGs to represent the state before the Karnataka High Court.
  • The development was notified by the state's Law, Justice, and Human Rights Department.
  • The AAGs appointed to represent the State government in the Supreme Court are Nishanth Patil, Mohammed Ali Khan, Pratheek Chadda, Avishkar Singhvi and Aman Panwar.

SC Asks Manipur to Submit Fresh Status Report on Violence

  • Amid allegations of escalation of ethnic violence in Manipur, the Supreme Court directed the state government to file a detailed updated status report on relief, rehabilitation, recovery of arms and law and order situation.
  • The state government, meanwhile, told a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud that the situation was improving slowly. On behalf of the tribal groups, senior counsel Colin Gonsalves said that he had filed a status report giving details of killings. Despite two assurances of the government, killings had gone up, he alleged.
  • The Manipur Tribal Forum wanted the top court to direct the Army to take full control of the law and order situation in Churachandpur, Chandel, Kangpokpi, Imphal East, and Imphal West districts of the state. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested Gonsalves not to give the violence a communal angle. On behalf of the government, Mehta said the situation was improving slowly and curfew had now been reduced to only five hours. Apart from the police and Manipur Rifles, 114 companies of CAPFs and 114 columns of the Army had been deployed, Mehta told the Bench.

Supreme Court Reopens after Summer Holidays with a Futuristic Look

  • After the summer break, the Supreme Court reopened with a paperless and technology-enabled set up including free WiFi facilities for advocates, litigants, and others.
  • Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud announced that the top court has made the facility of free Wi-Fi available in Courts 1-5 and soon it will be enabled in bar rooms as well.
  • He said that there will no books and papers but it does not mean that they will not rely on books and papers at all.

Tushar Mehta Re-appointed as Solicitor General for India, six ASGs for Supreme Court Re-appointed

  •  Senior advocate Tushar Mehta was re-appointed as the Solicitor General of India for a term of three years.
  • Mehta was appointed as Solicitor General on October 10, 2018 and since then he had been granted extension twice.
  • According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, besides Mehta, six Additional Solicitors General for the Supreme Court were also re-appointed for a period of three years.
  • Six ASGs who were re-appointed for the top court are Vikramjit Banerjee, K. M. Nataraj, Balbir Singh, S. V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati.
