Centre Notifies Transfer of 3 High Court Judges

  • Three days after the SC Collegium, led by CJI D. Y. Chandrachud, recommended their shifting for better administration of justice, the Centre notified the transfer of three High Court judges, one each from the High Courts of Punjab and Haryana, Delhi and Allahabad.
  • Those transferred were Justice Manoj Bajaj of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Allahabad High Court; Justice Gaurang Kanth of the Delhi High Court to the Calcutta High Court; and Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh of the Allahabad High Court to the Kerala High Court.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of 3 Persons as Judges of the Telangana High Court

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended appointment of one judicial officer along with two advocates as judges of the Telangana High Court.
  • The name of the judicial officer who was recommended is Sujana Kalasikam while the advocates are Laxminarayana Alishetty and Anil Kumar Jukanti.
  • As per the resolution of the Collegium, the judicial officer belongs to a backward category and the name was recommended for elevation in October 2022.

NGT Can't Pass Order Solely on Expert Panel Report: SC

  • Noting that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) can't pass directions based on expert committee reports and recommendations without hearing objections from parties, the Supreme Court said that the tribunal must follow the principles of natural justice.
  • If the NGT intends to rely upon an expert committee report, it should disclose in advance to the party so as to give an opportunity for discussion and rebuttal. A reasonable opportunity must be afforded to present their observations on such a report. It is needless to observe that the experts' opinion is only by way of assistance in arriving at a final conclusion.

Alexander Thomas Is Acting Chief Justice of Kerala HC

  • Justice Alexander Thomas, the senior-most judge of the Kerala High Court was appointed acting Chief Justice following the elevation of S. V. N. Bhatti as Supreme Court judge. He was appointed as additional judge on January 23, 2014 and made a permanent judge with effect from March 10, 2016. Before being appointed as a judge, he had served as Senior Government Pleader, Standing Counsel for Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Railway Ministry, and the Kerala Public Service Commission.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Transfer of Three High Court Judges

  • The Supreme Court Collegium decided to keep up with decision to recommend the transfer three High Court judges.
  • The Collegium also rejected their individual requests for continuing at their parent High Court or be transferred to neighbouring states of their choice.
  • The Collegium found no merit in the requests of the three judges.
  • The following are the three judges who have been recommended for transfer.
  • Justice Manoj Bajaj of the Punjab & Haryana High Court to Allahabad High Court; Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh of the Allahabad High Court to Kerala High Court and Justice Gaurang Kanth of the Delhi High Court to Calcutta High Court.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, Justice S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti as SC Judges

  • Days after their names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, two High Court Chief Justices were appointed as judges of the Supreme Court. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments of judges Ujjal Bhuyan and S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti.
  • The names of Justice Bhuyan, the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, and Justice Bhatti, Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, were recommended for elevation to the top court by the Supreme Court Collegium. The Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice, but was functioning with 30. With two new judges, the working strength of the apex court went up to 32, leaving two vacancies.
