CJI D. Y. Chandrachud Inaugurates NLU Prayagraj

  • Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud inaugurated Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj and also urged the university to employ Hindi as the medium of instruction in the college.
  • The event was also attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra.
  • The CJI further said that education at the new NLU should reach students beyond Prayagraj to smaller towns in Uttar Pradesh and other States.

Supreme Court Appoints 10 Additional Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court as Permanent

  • The 10 additional judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court were appointed by the Supreme Court collegium as permanent judges.
  • The judges who have been elevated to position include Justice Kuldeep Tiwari, Justice Singh, Justice Deepak Gupta, Justice Amarjot Bhatti, Justice Ritu Tagore, Justice Manisha Batra, Justice Harpreet Kaur Jeewan, Justice Sukhvinder Kaur, Justice Sanjiv Berry and Justice Vikram Aggarwal.

Delhi High Court Judge Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav to Head UAPA Tribunal on SIMI Ban Extension

  • Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav of Delhi High Court was nominated as the Presiding Officer of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal to adjudicate whether there is sufficient cause for declaring Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) an 'unlawful association' under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
  • Justice Kaurav was elevated as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in October 2021. He was transferred to Delhi High Court later and was sworn in as a judge of the Delhi High Court in June 2022.
  • SIMI was founded in 1977 in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh with Mohammad Ahmadullah Siddiqi as its founding president.
  • The organisation was banned for the first time in September 2001 citing its involvement in promoting terrorism and unlawful activities.
  • In January 2024, the ban was extended for a further period of five years.

State of Punjab Appoints Five Lawyers as Additional Advocates General in Supreme Court

  • Five advocates were appointed as Additional Advocates General (AAGs) to represent the State of Punjab in cases before the Supreme Court of India.
  • The advocates who were appointed are: Gaurav Dhama, Rajat Bhardwaj, Rajesh Mahajan, Sandeep Bajaj and Shadan Farasat.
  • The engagement of the five AAGs is on a one-year contractual basis.

In 2023, HCs Heard Cases of 80 on Death Row, Confirmed One

  • In 2023, Appellate Courts — Supreme Court and all the High Courts together — confirmed only one death sentence in 2023 while the rest were either commuted or saw the prisoners acquitted altogether, according to a new report by a criminal reforms advocacy group that has raised concerns about the quality of probe and evidence in such cases.
  • The Annual Death Penalty Report, 2023 was prepared by Project 39A, a criminal justice programme linked with the National Law University, Delhi, was released.
  • The sole confirmation was recorded at the Karnataka HC, which, in May 2023, agreed with the death sentence awarded in a murder case.

Indian Government Gives Nod to Establish Supreme Court Regional Benches

  • The Indian government gave its nod to the recommendation of a parliamentary committee advocating the establishment of regional benches for the Supreme Court. As per a report, the Parliamentary Standing Committee had highlighted that the apex court has "consistently" dismissed the idea, citing it as a sub-judice matter.
  • The Supreme Court has been consistently rejecting the proposal for setting up of the Benches of Supreme Court at a place outside Delhi.
  • Presenting its action-taken report on 'Judicial Processes and Their Reforms', the Standing Committee on Law and Personnel in the Lok Sabha revealed that the government has acknowledged its suggestion.
  • The committee highlighted that establishing regional benches could alleviate the burden on the judiciary and reduce litigation costs for the common man.
  • The committee reiterated its persistent recommendation for setting up regional Supreme Court benches and proposed the invocation of Article 130 of the Constitution for this purpose. The panel recommended the setting up of regional benches in four or five locations across India.

SC collegium Recommends Justice N. V. Anjaria's Name as Chief Justice of Karnataka HC

  • The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud recommended the name of Gujarat High Court judge N. V. Anjaria as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
  • The collegium, also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B. R. Gavai, said that a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court would arise after the retirement of Justice P. S. Dinesh Kumar on February 24.
