CAG Murmu, Nepal's Auditor General sign MoU for auditing collaboration

  • Comptroller and Auditor General of India Girish Chandra Murmu and Auditor General of Nepal Toyam Raya signed a MoU to enhance auditing collaboration.
  • The agreement aims to promote the exchange of expertise, capacity development, and mutual assistance in audits.
  • The signing ceremony marks a milestone in fostering closer ties and reaffirms shared values between the two institutions.
  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), Girish Chandra Murmu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Toyam Raya, Auditor General of Nepal to enhance cooperation between the two institutions.
  • Girish Chandra Murmu, who is on an official visit to Nepal, signed the MoU in Kathmandu, Nepal, in the presence of dignitaries from both countries.

India, Maldives Hold Meeting to Resolve Disputes

  • Days before the possible visit of Maldives Foreign Minister, India and the Maldives held the fourth meeting of the India-Maldives high-level core group.
  • The core group was set to resolve issues that have affected the relationship after new Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu announced that he would review Male's dependency on Indian security and economic assistance.
  • Both sides continued their discussions on defence cooperation, development cooperation projects, efforts to enhance bilateral trade and investment, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • However, a Maldivian statement said that both sides also reviewed "the ongoing efforts to enable continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medevac services to the people of Maldives". It was further agreed that the fifth meeting of the core group will be held in Male on a mutually agreeable date during the months of June and July.

Eight Railway Station in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh Renamed

  • The Centre approved renaming 8 Amethi railway stations in Uttar Pradesh. A no-objection-certificate (NOC) was issued to rename Fursatganj Railway Station as Tapeshwarnath Dham, Kasimpur Halt as Jais City, Jais City as Guru Gorakhnath Dham, Bani as Swami Paramhans, Misrauli as Maa Kalikan Dham, Nihalgarh as Maharaja Bijli Pasi, and Akbarganj as Maa Kalikan Dham, according to the home ministry.
  • The decision to rename the railway stations in Amethi follows persistent demands from the local community to honor prominent local figures and reflect the region's cultural heritage. The renaming initiative aims to align infrastructure with the cultural ethos of the region and foster a sense of pride among residents.
  • The renaming of railway stations in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district serves to preserve cultural heritage and honor local icons.

Amethi Gets First Non-Gandhi Congress Candidate since 1998

  • The Congress party named Kishori Lal Sharma as its candidate in the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Sharma will be pitted against BJP's Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 general elections by more than 50,000 votes.
  • Sharma's nomination came as Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers from Rae Bareli, his family's traditional bastion neighbouring Amethi. The Gandhi family's influence in Amethi has been disrupted since Rahul Gandhi's defeat in 2019, and Sharma's candidacy is seen as an attempt to have a foothold in the region.
  • The last non-Gandhi Congress candidate in Amethi was Satish Sharma, who won twice after the seat was vacated following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Satish Sharma was defeated in 1998, following Gandhis came back to reign in Amethi from 1999.

Rahul Gandhi Becomes Third Generation Gandhi to Contest from Rae Bareli

  • Rahul Gandhi's nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli has reignited focus on the Congress party pocket borough, first represented in the Lok Sabha by his grandfather Feroze Gandhi in 1952. During his tenure, Feroze Gandhi had established a strong foundation which was later nurtured and strengthened by his wife, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She had won the seat in 1967, 1971, and 1980, and the seat was retained by friends and family members of the Gandhi family.
  • Rahul Gandhi is the third generation of the Gandhis to contest from Rae Bareli.
  • The BJP sought to wrest the only remaining Congress citadel in Uttar Pradesh, where the party has been out of power since 1989. It won one of the five assembly seats in Rae Bareli, an Other Backward Classes (OBC) dominated constituency, in 2022 as the BJP stormed back to power in the state for a second time even as Priyanka Gandhi campaigned across the state. Congress's ally Samajwadi Party won the other four assembly segments.

Maushumi Chakravarty Appointed Director General of Akashvani News

  • Senior Indian Information Service officer, Maushumi Chakravarty assumed of the charge of Director General of Akashvani News. A 1991 batch IIS officer, Ms Chakravarty has vast experience of working in several media organisations of the I&B Ministry, including the Press Information Bureau and Central Bureau of Communication.
  • In her career spanning over three decades, she has also worked on deputation basis in the National Human Rights Commission and as P.S. to Cabinet Minister. Ms. Chakravarty assumed the charge after superannuation of Ms. Vasudha Gupta as Principal DG.

Bhushan Singh (IRTS) Appointed as Secretary of National Jute Board

  • The Central Government approved the appointment of Bhushan Singh (IRTS) as Secretary (at Director level) of the National Jute Board, Kolkata under the Ministry of Textiles.
  • Singh was appointed to the post for five years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Singh is an Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) of the 2010 batch.

Devender Yadav is Interim Chief of Delhi Unit

  • Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Devender Yadav as the interim chief of the party's Delhi unit, days after Arvinder Singh Lovely resigned from the post citing his inability to continue without a free hand and criticising the alliance with AAP.
  • Yadav will continue in his role as AICC in-charge for Punjab.
  • Devender Yadav won from the Badli assembly constituency in Delhi in 2008 and 2013 and lost to Ajesh Yadav of AAP in 2015, and is currently the All India Congress Committee's (AICC) Punjab in-charge.

CISF Takes over Parliament Security from Delhi Police

  • CISF personnel replaced the 150 personnel of the Delhi Police, including 54 women personnel, who were deployed for the security of Parliament complex following a security breach on December 13 last year (2023).
  • The move was initiated on the request of the Lok Sabha Secretariat who asked the Security unit of the Delhi Police to withdraw its 150 personnel from the Parliament premises.
