Mission Ishan, India's Push for 'One Nation, One Airspace', Will Benefit Airlines & Passengers Alike

  • India has kickstarted the process of unifying its four airspace regions into one spanning the entire nation in order to streamline and enhance air traffic management.
  • The Airports Authority of India (AAI), the public entity responsible for air traffic management (ATM) services, last month invited expressions of interest (EoI) for the preparation of a detailed project report for an Indian Single Sky Harmonized Air Traffic Management at Nagpur (ISHAN).
  • The move is expected to benefit not just the airlines through more seamless operations and increased flight handling capacity, but also passengers by reducing congestion and flying times.
  • The AAI provides ATM services over Indian airspace and adjoining oceanic areas covering over 2.8 million square nautical miles, of which 1.04 million square nautical miles are continental and 1.76 million square nautical miles are oceanic. 
  • This airspace is controlled through four flight information regions (FIRs) at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, and a sub-flight information region at Guwahati.

Shompen Tribe Casts Historic Votes in Andaman and Nicobar Elections

  • Members of the Shompen tribe, one of India's Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), exercised their democratic right for the first time by casting votes in the Andaman and Nicobar Lok Sabha constituency elections. This significant event marked a milestone for the indigenous community residing in the dense tropical rainforests of the Great Nicobar island.
  • According to the Chief Electoral Officer of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, B. S. Jaglan, seven members of the Shompen tribe participated in the election process by casting their votes. The Shompen population, as per the 2011 Census data, stands at an estimated 229 individuals.
  • The overall voter turnout in the Andaman and Nicobar Lok Sabha constituency was recorded at 63.99%, slightly lower than the 65.09% turnout witnessed in the 2019 elections.

ISKCON and NSDC Collaborate for Tribal Skill Development

  • In a bid to empower tribal and underprivileged youth across India, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) joined forces. The partnership aims to provide vocational training to marginalised communities, initially focusing on Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Under this strategic partnership, short-term courses will be conducted, offering industry-recognised certifications through the Skill India Digital Hub platform. The goal is to enhance employability and provide access to both domestic and international job opportunities for the trained individuals, facilitated by NSDC International.

A First for BJP, Wins Surat Lok Sabha Seat Unopposed

  • A day after the nomination of the Congress candidate from Surat was rejected, the BJP's Mukesh Dalal was declared elected uncontested from the Lok Sabha seat, after the eight remaining nominees withdrew one by one.
  • While four of them were Independents, three belonged to little-known parties and one was a candidate of the BSP. Surat City BSP president Satish Sonavne alleged the hand of the BJP in the withdrawal of its nominee, Pyarelal Bharti.
  • It is rare for candidates to win uncontested in Lok Sabha elections, with only 23 such known instances before this since Independence (not counting bypolls) as per the Election Commission website.

Mehboob Ali Kaiser, NDA's Lone Muslim MP in Bihar, Joins RJD

  • LJP MP Mehboob Ali Kaiser, the lone Muslim who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the BJP-led NDA in Bihar, joined the RJD, in a shot in the arm for the opposition party amid the elections.
  • Kaiser, who sided with former Union Minister Pashupati Kumar Paras when the latter split the LJP, and was denied a ticket this time by Chirag Paswan despite efforts to seek rapprochement, joined the RJD in the presence of its leader Tejashwi Yadav.

PM Modi Graces 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav

  • On the auspicious occasion of Mahaveer Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event paid tribute to the 24th Tirthankar, Bhagwan Mahaveer, whose teachings of Ahimsa (Non-Violence), Satya (Truthfulness), Asteya (Non-Stealing), Brahmacharya (Chastity), and Aparigraha (Non-attachment) have illuminated the path of peaceful coexistence and universal brotherhood.
  • During the ceremony, PM Modi released a commemorative stamp and coin, witnessing a dance drama titled "Vartaman mein Vardhaman" performed by school children. He praised the youth's dedication to Bhagwan Mahaveer's values, calling it a sign of the nation moving in the right direction.

Tajinder Bittu, Priyanka Gandhi's Close Aide, Joins BJP

  • Tajinder Singh Bittu, a close aide of Priyanka Gandhi, joined the BJP in Delhi hours after resigning from the Congress. The development came as another setback to the Congress, which has seen an exodus of high-profile leaders in recent weeks amid the Lok Sabha polls.
  • Bittu, who was the Congress secretary in-charge of Himachal Pradesh, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and party general secretary Vinod Tawde.

Veteran BJP Leader and Former Minister Malikayya Guttedar Joins Congress

  • Former Minister and BJP leader Malikayya Guttedar joined the Congress.
  • The six-time MLA from Afzalpur in Kalaburagi district has been upset with the induction of his brother Nithin Guttedar into the BJP.
  • M. Y. Patil from Congress had won the seat in the 2023 Assembly election, in which Malikayya Guttedar had finished third behind Nithin, who contested as an independent.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Phase-1 Sees 62% Turnout

  • Over 62 per cent polling was recorded across 102 seats in 21 states and UTs in the first phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections by the time voting ended at 6 pm amid reports of sporadic violence in West Bengal and strife-torn Manipur, while no voting was recorded in eastern Nagaland after a shutdown call given by a separatist group, the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO).
