Centre Hands over First Set of Citizenship Documents under CAA

  • Two months after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notified the rules for implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which was enacted by Parliament in December 2019, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on May 15 physically handed over the first set of citizenship certificates to 14 applicants.
  • Despite its enactment four years ago, the CAA could not be implemented because the rules were not notified.

Home Ministry Extends Ban on LTTE by 5 Years: 'Threat to India'

  • The Union Home Ministry extended the ban on the LTTE by five more years for fostering a separatist tendency among the masses and enhancing the support base for it in the country, particularly in Tamil Nadu, besides threatening the territorial integrity of India.
  • The Centre has imposed the ban invoking the sub-sections (1) and (3) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

CISF Lists Out Phased Takeover of Parliament Security

  • The security of Parliament complex, including the vehicular access and pass issuing section, will be taken over by the CISF personnel, a process that started on Tuesday and will be completed over the week. This came days after the Home Ministry appointed a panel to assess whether personnel of the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) should fully take over — right from managing security arrangements to issuing passes to regulating movement of MPs, VIPs, officials and the media.
  • As per the order, the pass checking at flap gates of all the buildings in Parliament House Complex has been handed over to the CISF on May 14. The order suggested that anti-sabotage check is to be handed over on May 15, Dogs of dog squad (to be handed over on May 15), CCTV control rooms (6am on May 15), vehicular access control at Talkatora gate and Parliament Library gates (on May 20), and Communication Control Room, and pass section for both the Houses, deployment and transport branch, and reception counters (LS and RS) on May 20.

Aam Aadmi Party Launches 'Washing Machine Ka Kaala Jaadu' Campaign

  • The Aam Aadmi Party launched the "Washing Machine Ka Kaalu Jaadu" campaign to inform the common people about the situation in the country, party leaders said. At the campaign launch, AAP Delhi state convener Gopal Rai said the BJP is claiming that they are fighting the elections against corruption. "But we will tell people about the truth of these claims." he said. The opposition parties often use the word "washing machine" to target the BJP over inducting people like Ajit Pawar, Ashok Chavan, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, who were facing corruption charges.

  • India is set to host a 'Bharat Parv' at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for eminent dignitaries and delegates from around the world to showcase the myriad creative opportunities in the country At the prestigious film gala, a delegation consisting of representatives from central and state governments as well as members of the industry will showcase India's creative economy in Marche du Films through a series of significant initiatives, the Information and Broadcasting ministry said.

  • The Nagaland government constituted a 'Political Affairs Committee' comprising ministers and legislature party leaders of all political parties in the state Assembly to find an inclusive solution to the Naga Political issue.
  • The PAC was constituted during a high-level political meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.
  • The PAC comprising the council of ministers and the legislature party leaders of all political parties in the current Nagaland Legislative Assembly was formed to find an inclusive solution to the long-drawn Naga Political issue as a facilitator.

Arvind Kejriwal Announces 10 Guarantees amid Ongoing General Election

  • Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal announced 'Kejriwal ki Guarantee', listing 10 works that will be done on war-footing, including to free Indian land from Chinese occupation, if the INDIA bloc forms government at the Centre.
  • The opposition bloc, which has parties such as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam among others as its members, was formed to take on the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the Lok Sabha polls.
  • On 'Kejriwal ki Guarantee', he said 24X7 power supply, good education and health facilities, and arranging two crore jobs for youths every year are part of it.
  • We worked on management to ensure 24x7 power supply in Punjab and Delhi. We can do it in the entire country. The government schools in the country are in a bad shape. We will arrange good quality education across the country. We know how to do it.
  • Kejriwal also promised to end the Agniveer scheme and ensure that farmers get MSP for their crops as per the Swaminathan Commission's report.
  • "Rashtra Sarvopari is our guarantee. China has occupied our land and we will free it from their occupation," he said. Kejriwal also promised to provide full statehood to Delhi.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Gets Interim Bail

  • The Supreme Court gave Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal interim bail till June 1, the final phase of voting for the seven-stage 2024 Lok Sabha election.
  • The Aam Aadmi Party boss - arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in the alleged Delhi liquor excise policy scam, must surrender to prison officials by June 2.
  • The court also said pleas to extend relief beyond that date would be heard next week; Mr Kejriwal's legal team had sought bail till July, i.e., till after the election and the formation of the new government.
  • The conditions imposed by Supreme Court on his bail are:
  • He shall furnish bail bonds in the sum of Rs. 50,000/- with one surety of the like amount to the satisfaction of the Jail Superintendent;
  • He shall not visit the Office of the Chief Minister and the Delhi Secretariat;
  • He shall be bound by the statement made on his behalf that he shall not sign official files unless it is required and necessary for obtaining clearance/approval of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi
  • He will not make any comment with regard to his role in the present case; and
  • He will not interact with any of the witnesses and/or have access to any official files connected with the case.

China's New Ambassador Xu Feihong Arrives in Delhi

  • China's new ambassador to India Xu Feihong arrived in Delhi after the position remained vacant for nearly 18 months, the longest such gap in over four decades.
  • Xu succeeded veteran diplomat Sun Weidong who left India after completing his tenure in India in October 2022.
  • His arrival in India came amid protracted military and diplomatic negotiations between Beijing and New Delhi to resolve the military standoff in eastern Ladakh.
