Government Starts Granting Citizenship under CAA in West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand

The Union government started granting citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in West Bengal, Haryana and Uttarakhand.
The CAA was enacted in December 2019 for granting Indian nationality to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
The applicants in West Bengal, Haryana and Uttarakhand were granted citizenship by the respective State Empowered Committee.
The first set of citizenship certificates after the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, granted by the Empowered Committee, Delhi, were handed over to the applicants in New Delhi by the Union Home Secretary on May 15.
Even though the CAA was enactment in 2019, the rules to grant citizenship under it were issued on March 11, 2024, after a delay of more than four years.

In One Go, 11 ED Officers Made Joint Director

The Centre promoted 11 Enforcement Directorate-cadre officers to the rank of Joint Director in the federal anti-money laundering agency.
This is the first time that so many cadre officers were promoted in one go to the Joint Director level, an important position vis-a-vis investigations.
The Department of Revenue under the Union Finance Ministry issued an order for promoting 11 officers from the Joint Director rank.
A Joint Director position in the ED envisages supervising investigations related to money laundering and foreign exchange contravention.
The ED is tasked with investigating financial crimes under three laws — the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act.

India Announces $1 Million Relief Assistance for Landslide-Hit Papua New Guinea

India announced an immediate relief assistance of one million US dollar to support relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts to Papua New Guinea in the wake of devastating landslide. A massive landslide occurred on May 24 in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea which buried hundreds of people and caused major destruction and loss of life.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and damage caused by the devastating landslide in Papua New Guinea.

Centre Sanctions Rs. 21,253 crore to Tackle Kerala's Economic Crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi came forward to assist Kerala in a bid to alleviate the state from the economic crisis as the Centre sanctioned borrowings up to Rs. 21,253 crore.
This substantial financial aid aims to address the state's pressing economic needs and facilitate the execution of critical projects for the welfare of its citizens.

Akhilesh Yadav's Party Leader Calls Amit Shah 'Chanakya of Politics', Hints at Switchover

In a setback for the Samajwadi Party, its leader and former minister Narad Rai hinted that he is all set to join the BJP and heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
At a meeting in Khori Pakad village, Rai had alleged that he was humiliated at a rally in favour of SP candidate Sanatan Pandey as his name was not taken by SP president Akhilesh Yadav though he was present on the dais.

Dissolution of Food and Nutrition Board

The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), set up in 1964, a technical branch of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) responsible for providing logistical support to community nutrition programs, was officially dissolved as part of the government's plan to rationalize various bodies.
In a gazette notification issued, the WCD Ministry announced the dissolution of the FNB, which operated a wide network of offices, including four regional offices and several quality control laboratories across major cities like Faridabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Centre Effects Secretary-level Reshuffle, Pradip Kumar Tripathi Named Lokpal Secretary

Senior bureaucrat Pradip Kumar Tripathi was appointed as the Lokpal Secretary as part of a secretary-level reshuffle effected by the Centre.
Tripathi is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service officer (IAS).
He was appointed as Secretary to the Lokpal till the date of his superannuation (June 30) and thereafter on contract basis for a period of two years beyond the date of his superannuation on usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers, said an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
Border Management Secretary Raj Kumar Goyal was appointed as Secretary, Department of Justice under the Ministry of Law & Justice.

DD Kisan launched AI Anchors Krish and Bhoomi

Doordarshan Kisan (DD KISAN) has become the first government TV channel of the country to launch two AI anchors – AI Krish and AI Bhoomi.
The AI anchors can speak in fifty languages and read news 24 hours and 365 days without getting tired.
The viewers will be able to see these anchors in all the states of the country.
These AI anchors will provide necessary information about agricultural research in the country and global level, trends in Krishi Mandis, changes in the weather and information about government schemes.
