Astrophysicist Jayant Vishnu Narlikar died aged 87 in Pune. A pioneering figure in Indian science, Narlikar was the founding director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and a passionate science communicator.
Narlikar was a beloved science communicator. He wrote books, articles, and created programmes for radio and TV in English, Marathi, and Hindi. In 1996, UNESCO honoured him with the Kalinga Award for science popularisation.
In 1965, at the age of 26, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour. Later, in 2004, he received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award.
He was a Fellow of all three national science academies of India, the Royal Astronomical Society of London, and the Third World Academy of Sciences.

M. R. Srinivasan, Pioneer of India's Nuclear Energy Programme, Passes Away
M. R. Srinivasan, an eminent nuclear scientist and former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, passed away at the age of 95.
A key architect of India's civil nuclear energy programme, Srinivasan's career in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) spanned over five decades, beginning in September 1955.
He worked closely with Homi Bhabha on the construction of Apsara, India's first nuclear research reactor, which attained criticality in August 1956.
For his exemplary contributions to the field of nuclear science and engineering, Srinivasan was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour.

Jose Mujica, Uruguay's Former Leader Passes Away
Jose Mujica, a one-time guerrilla and later President of Uruguay whose unpretentious style and progressive reforms earned him lavish profile pieces in the international media, died aged 89.
He won the 2009 presidential election and took office as the 40th President on March 1 2010 and served as President till March 1, 2015.
As President, Mujica adopted what was then a pioneering liberal stance on issues related to civil liberties.

Padma Shri Scientist Subbanna Ayyappan No More
Former Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Padma Shri awardee, Subbanna Ayyappan, died.
Ayyappan was an agriculture and fisheries (aquaculture) scientist, and was the first non-crop scientist to head the ICAR.
Ayyappan is widely credited to having spearheaded India's Blue Revolution, aimed at revolutionising aquaculture in India.

Padma Shri awardee Ms. K. V. Rabiya Passes Away
K. V. Rabia, Padma Shri awardee and a literacy activist from Vellilakad, Tirurangadi, Kerala who overcame serious physical challenges such as polio, cancer and spinal cord injury and made her mark in the field of social service, passed away at the age of 59.
In 2022, she was honoured with the Padma Shri for her contributions to the field of social service. Additionally, she was awarded the National Youth Award in 1993. She has received many honours, including the International Award, the Murimathil Bava Award, the Seethi Sahib Memorial Award (2010), the Kannaki Stree Shakti Puraskar (1999), and the Vanitha Ratnam Award from the state government in 2014.
