Dharma Guardian 2022

  • At Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre in Belagavi, Karnataka, the army contingents of India and Japan together carried out mock drills during the joint military exercise 'Dharma Guardian 2022'.
  • This annual military exercise between the armies of India and Japan commenced on 27th February and concluded on 10th March 2022.
  • Dharma Guardian is an annual military exercise that is being conducted in India since 2018.
  • Platoon level joint training on operations in semi-urban or urban terrain and the jungle is covered in this exercise.
  • Under this exercise special emphasis is given to enhancing the tactical skills required to fight global terrorism. It also looks to enhance inter-operability between both armies and to promote Army to Army relations.
  • In this 12 day long joint exercise, the Indian Army's 15th Battalion the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment and the 30th Infantry Regiment of Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF) participated.

Iran Puts New Military Satellite in Orbit

  • Iran successfully placed a military satellite in orbit, as talks on reviving a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers reached a critical stage.
  • Iran's second military satellite -- named Nour-2 -- was launched into space by the Qassed rocket of the aerospace wing of the Revolutionary Guards and successfully placed in orbit 500 kilometres (310 miles) above the Earth.
  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described the Nour-2 as a "reconnaissance satellite".
  • This satellite would orbit the Earth every 90 minutes, and its mission will last at least three years.

Saudi, Lockheed Martin in Missile Defence Deal

  • Saudi Arabia announced a deal with US firm Lockheed Martin to manufacture elements of the missile defences of the Gulf state, the target of frequent cross-border attacks by rebels in Yemen.
  • Its military industries authority approved two projects to produce launchers and other equipment used in the THAAD anti-missile defence system.
  • The announcement came on the sidelines of an international arms show which opened Sunday in the Saudi capital.
  • The United States, the oil-rich kingdom's top ally, had deployed THAAD and Patriot defence systems in Saudi Arabia in October 2019 at a time of heightened tensions with Riyadh's regional rival Tehran.

India-Sri Lanka Maritime Exercise SLINEX Begins in Visakhapatnam

  • The ninth edition of the India-Sri Lanka bilateral maritime exercise SLINEX is underway at Visakhapatnam with an aim to enhance interoperability and improve mutual understanding between the navies of the two neighbouring countries in the strategically significant Indian Ocean Region.
  • SLINEX (Sri Lanka–India Naval Exercise) is being conducted in two phases. The first one, the harbour phase at Visakhapatnam on March 7 and 8, followed by the sea phase on March 9 and 10 in the Bay of Bengal.
  • SLINEX aims to enhance interoperability, improve mutual understanding and also exchange best practices and procedures for multi-faceted maritime operations between both navies.

India Pitches with France to Become Rafale Maintenance Hub

  • India pitched with France to become a hub for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) for Rafale fighter jets.
  • This came even as last month Indonesia entered into a deal with France to buy 42 Rafale Jets and UAE signed a deal to buy 80 of the fighter jets In December 2021.
  • The Indian proposal came amid the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat policy under which local manufacturing of defence equipment has been the focus. During the visit of French Defence Minister Florence Parly, both sides had discussed joint manufacture of aero engines in India.

Defence Expo 2022 Postponed

  • The Defence Expo 2022, which was proposed to be held in Gujarat's Gandhinagar from March 10-March 14, was postponed. The announcement came at a time when the Russia-Ukraine conflict is escalating.
  • The 12th edition of the prestigious biennial defence exhibition was postponed due to logistics problems being experienced by participants.

IIT-Kanpur, Ordnance Factory Medak Develop India's 1st Soft Recovery System

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, (IIT-K) and Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK), Telangana, a unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, in a joint effort developed India's first soft recovery system (SRS) for supersonic projectile.
  • The SRS bears the potential to arrest the motion of a 30 mm supersonic projectile moving at a speed of roughly Mach 3 -- three times the speed of sound within a distance of nearly 50 metres.
  • The technology was developed under leadership of Nachiketa Tiwari of IIT-K and Alok Prasad, General Manager of OFMK.
  • An SRS is used for the recovery of a projectile after initial impact with minimum damage to ensure the development of smart and intelligent warheads with maximum effectiveness and minimum collateral damage.
