Army Carries Out Airborne Insertion Exercise

The Army carried out a two-day airborne insertion and rapid response exercise in the country's peninsular region in sync with its overall approach to maintain operational readiness.

India Emerges as the Largest Importer of Arms in 2017-21

The latest report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on Trends in International Arms Transfer, 2021, released in March 2022, revealed that India and Saudi Arabia had emerged as the largest arms importers of arms between 2017-21, each accounting for 11% of all global arms sales. The report placed India at the top of the list. Egypt, Australia and China were the next three largest importers with respective shares of 5.7%, 5.4% and 4.8%.
Paradoxically, India was the only country among the top five whose imports had declined during the said period. The 21% decline in India's imports in 2017-21 compared with 2012-16 were possibly because of the growing emphasis on the indigenous design and manufacture of defence equipment by state-owned and private sector companies.

Germany to Buy US-made F-35s to Replace Aging Bombers

Germany said that it will replace some of its aging Tornado bomber jets with U.S.-made F-35A Lightning II aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said that Germany also will upgrade its Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets for electronic warfare - a capability that's also currently fulfilled by the Tornado jets. The Eurofighter will be replaced from 2040 with the Future Combat Air System, or FCAS, that's being jointly developed with France and Spain.
The German military does not have nuclear weapons of its own, but as part of the system of nuclear deterrence developed during the Cold War it maintained bombers capable of carrying U.S. atomic bombs, some of which are stationed in Germany.

In a First, 100-year-old Rashtriya Indian Military College to Open its Doors for Girls

For the first time in its 100-year history, Dehradun's Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), which takes students from class VIII onwards and is regarded as a premier preparing ground for those aspiring to join the armed forces, will admit girls. "After the government opened the doors of National Defence Academy (NDA) to women, RIMC decided to follow suit. We will be admitting five girl students in July.
Established in March 1922 by the then British-Indian government, RIMC was meant to impart military training to the Indian youth, who could later be inducted as military officers in the then British-Indian Army. Since its inception, RIMC has trained only boys and acts as a feeder institute for NDA and the Naval Academy.

Australia's AARC Tie up with India's CLAWS

In March Lt Gen Richard Burr, the Chief of the Australian Army visited India for three days. The Australian Army Chief paid a visit to the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), an Indian Army think tank in New Delhi.
Lt. Gen Richard Burr met with Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Manoj Pande, Chairman, Board of Governors, CLAWS, and Director CLAWS, Lt Gen Dr Ranbir Singh (Retd). CLAWS research efforts and outreach strategies were briefed to the visiting General. On the sidelines of the tour, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Australian Army Research Centre (AARC) and the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) to create academic cooperation and engagement.

Air Marshal B. C. Sekhar is New Commandant of IAFA

Air Marshal B. Chandra Sekhar, recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), was named Commandant of the Indian Air Force Academy. Air Marshal B. Chandra Sekhar is a Telangana native who attended school in Hyderabad before enrolling at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla. He was commissioned in the Indian Air Force on December 21, 1984, after attending Defence Services Staff College Wellington, Flying Instructors' School, College of Defence Management, and National Defence College New Delhi.

Dharma Guardian 2022

At Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre in Belagavi, Karnataka, the army contingents of India and Japan together carried out mock drills during the joint military exercise 'Dharma Guardian 2022'.
This annual military exercise between the armies of India and Japan commenced on 27th February and concluded on 10th March 2022.
Dharma Guardian is an annual military exercise that is being conducted in India since 2018.
Platoon level joint training on operations in semi-urban or urban terrain and the jungle is covered in this exercise.
Under this exercise special emphasis is given to enhancing the tactical skills required to fight global terrorism. It also looks to enhance inter-operability between both armies and to promote Army to Army relations.
In this 12 day long joint exercise, the Indian Army's 15th Battalion the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment and the 30th Infantry Regiment of Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF) participated.
