Rakesh Pal is 25th Director General of Indian Coast Guard

  • Rakesh Pal was appointed as the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. The officer, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, is an alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy and joined Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in January 1989.
  • As per reports, Pal has undergone professional specialisation in the Gunnery and Weapons System at the Indian Naval School Dronacharya in Kochi and Electro-Optics Fire Control Solution course from the United Kingdom. Pal holds the recognition of being the first gunner of the ICG.
  • In his career of over 34 years, the flag officer has held several key appointments afloat and ashore. Among them, the prominent ones are - Commander Coast Guard Region (North West) in Gandhinagar, Deputy Director General (Policy and Plans) and Additional Director General Coast Guard at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi.
  • Rakesh Pal has also been conferred with the Tatrakshak Medal (TM) in the year 2013 and President Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) for his distinguished service in 2018.

Indian, Indonesian Naval Ships to Conduct Joint Exercise in Jakarta

  • Two frontline Indian Naval ships INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata reached Indonesia's Jakarta to participate in the Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with the Indonesian Navy.
  • During the port call, personnel from Indian and Indonesian navies will engage in a wide range of professional interactions, joint yoga sessions, sports fixtures and cross-deck visits, aimed at strengthening mutual cooperation and understanding between the two navies.
  • Upon completion of the operational turnaround, the two ships will also participate in a MPX at sea with the Indonesian Navy towards further bolstering the high degree of interoperability that already exists between the two navies.
  • INS Sahyadri is the third indigenously designed and built Project-17 class stealth frigate and INS Kolkata is the first indigenously designed and built stealth destroyer of the Project-15A class. Both the ships have been built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai.

India, Kyrgyzstan to Intensify Partnership to Counter Terror and Combat Radicalization

  • India and the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan agreed to intensify partnership to counter terror and combat radicalization and enhance defence cooperation.
  • The decision to boost bilateral security cooperation was taken at the second security dialogue in Bishkek.
  • Deputy National Security Advisor, Vikram Misri led the Indian delegation at the two day (July 17 and 18) dialogue while Marat Mukanovich Imankulov, Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic represented Kyrgyzstan.

Indian Navy Gets First Barge of Series LSAM 7

  • The first Barge of the series LSAM 7 (Yard 75) was delivered to Indian Navy.
  • This special Barge was handed over to the Navy in presence of Cmde Iftekhar Alam, Commanding Officer, INS Tunir.
  • The Barge has been built under the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) with a service life of 30 years.
  • According to the ministry of defence, with all major or auxiliary equipment sourced from indigenous manufacturers, the Barge is proud flag bearer of 'Make in India' initiative of Ministry of Defence.
  • Induction of MCA Barges will provide impetus to operational commitments of Navy by facilitating Transportation, Embarkation and Disembarkation of ammunition to Indian Navy Ships both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.

Ashok Leyland Secures Defence Sector Orders

  • Automobile manufacturer Ashok Leyland bagged orders valued at Rs. 800 crore in the defence sector. The contracts awarded include the procurement of the Field Artillery Tractor (FAT 4X4) and the Gun Towing Vehicle (GTV 6X6).
  • The two vehicles, FAT 4X4 and GTV 6X6, have special capabilities that will be used by the artillery to carry light and medium guns, respectively. The two vehicles are part of the government's plan to push indigenisation in the defence sector.

Indian Army Organises 'Vijay Diwas' Arms Exhibition in Kargil

  • Ahead of the 24th Kargil Vijay Diwas, 'Vijay Diwas Shastra Pradarshan' was organised by the Indian Army at Kargil on July 15 and 16, 2023. The Indian army showcased a varied display of weapons and equipment operated by them, with special emphasis on indigenous 'Made in India' weapons and equipment which were inducted as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
  • The event was inaugurated by General Officer Commanding, Forever in Operations Division.

INS Sunayna Participates in CMF Ex 'Op Southern Readiness-2023'

  • INS Sunayna was in the Seychelles and participated in Op Southern Readiness 2023 conducted by the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). The visit was aimed at strengthening multilateral ties and strengthening cooperation through the CMF exercise, a multinational initiative aimed at strengthening maritime security, countering piracy to ensure safety and freedom of navigation in the region.
  • During the visit, personnel from participating Navies from the US, Italy, UK, Seychelles Defense Forces and Maritime Police, EUNAVFOR member nations, engaged in a wide range of professional interactions, exchanges of and visits. The ship conducted lectures and practical demonstrations on various aspects of navigation, VBSS (basic and advanced training), maritime domain awareness, and mass evacuation exercises. A delegation of CMF from Bahrain led by Captain Oliver, Commander of CTF56 attended the training exercises on board.
