Space Start-up Pixxel Wins Defence Ministry Grant to Build Satellites for IAF

  • Space start-up Pixxel won a multi-crore rupee grant from the government to build miniaturised multi-payload satellites for the Indian Air Force, marking its entry into the defence sector.
  • Under the grant from Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) of the defence ministry, Pixxel will develop small satellites of up to 150 kg for electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture radar and hyperspectral purposes.
  • The grant is part of the SPARKS initiative under Mission DefSpace launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 with 75 defence space challenges in five buckets, launch system, satellite system, communication and payload system, ground system, and software system, to provide a holistic 360 degrees overview of space.

A. Madhavarao New Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Dynamics

  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) announced that the Ministry of Defence approved the appointment of A. Madhavarao as its Chairman and Managing Director. He had joined BDL in Mar 2020 as Executive.
  • In his previous role at BDL, he played a significant role in establishing a product support group to provide credible support to the Indian Armed Forces, enhancing the in-house R&D activities and establishing an effective supply chain to meet production schedules, the company said. He has worked towards various contracts signing with the Indian Armed Forces/ Ministry of Defence and other foreign countries contributing to the current healthy order book of the company.

Pakistan Navy Inducts Modern Warships PNS Tipu Sultan, Shahjahan

  • Pakistan Navy strengthened its fleet by inducting two modern warship, PNS Tipu Sultan and PNS Shahjahan, during a ceremony in a southern port city of Karachi.
  • The ceremony was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif as chief guest, while Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi and other officials were also present on the occasion.

Admiral Lisa Franchetti Becomes First Woman to Lead US Navy

  • President Joe Biden chose Admiral Lisa Franchetti as the Navy's highest-ranking officer. If confirmed, she will make history as the first woman to hold this position in the Navy and the first woman to be part of the joint chiefs of staff.
  • Admiral Lisa Franchetti is currently the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. She has a background as a surface warfare officer with extensive experience in both operational and policy roles. Previously, she held positions as the Director for Strategy, Plans, and Policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as the commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. Additionally, she served as commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea, commander of Carrier Strike Group 9, and commander of Carrier Strike Group 15.

Centre Appoints IPS Officer Manoj Yadava as DG Railway Protection Force

  • Manoj Yadava, a senior IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, was appointed as the new Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), according to an order from the Personnel Ministry. Yadava, who belongs to the 1988 batch of the Indian Police Service, will take over from Sanjay Chander, who is set to retire on July 31. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Yadava's appointment as DG, RPF, until his retirement on July 31, 2025.
  • Yadava served as the Haryana DGP from 2019-21.
  • Railway Protection Force (RPF) is an armed Force of the Union under the administrative and operational control of Indian Railways, Ministry of Railways, Government of India established by the Railway Protection Force Act, 1957; enacted by the Indian Parliament for the better protection and security of railway property and passenger area. It has the power to search, arrest, Enquiry, and prosecute offenses committed under Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act 1966, The Railways Act, 1989 (amended from time to time).

HAL and Argentina Defence Ministry Sign LoI for Light and Medium Utility Helicopters

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and the Ministry of Defence of Argentina signed a letter of intent (LoI) on productive cooperation and acquisition of light and medium utility helicopters for the armed forces of the Argentine Republic.
  • The LoI was signed by Argentinian Defence Minister Jorge Taiana and C. B. Ananthakrishnan, CMD, HAL, in the presence of Francisco Cafiero, secretary of International Affairs, ambassador Hugo Javier Gobbi, and ambassador Dinesh Bhatia.
  • This is the second time a South American country expressed interest in HAL-manufactured helicopters. It can be recalled that Ecuador had procured seven advanced light helicopters (ALH) Dhruv in two batches, five in 2009 and two in 2011, in a deal worth $45.2 million. However, following four crashes, Ecuador terminated the contract with HAL in October 2015. Apart from Ecuador, HAL has also exported ALH Dhruv to Mauritius and Maldives.

USS Stethem Conducts Cooperative Deployment with Indian Navy in Goa

  • The USA's Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63) conducted a Cooperative Deployment (CODEP) with the Indian Navy following the ship's port visit to Goa.
  • The US Navy destroyer worked with the Indian Navy frigate INS Tarkash (F-50), and the operations focused on building interoperability and strengthening relationships through manoeuvering and communication exercises.
  • US Consul General in Mumbai Mike Hankey said that the port visit reinforces President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to an Indo-Pacific region built on shared values and principles "as we strengthen the relationship between our two countries.

IAF Maintenance Command Develops Satellite-based Real Time Aircraft Tracking System

  • The Indian Air Force's Maintenance Command developed a satellite-based real time aircraft tracking system that can get information about the location of an aircraft.
  • Air Marshal Vibhas Pande, Air Officer Commanding in Chief (AOC-in-C), Maintenance Command, said that the aircraft tracking system would be implemented once the final trial in the eastern sector gets over. The indigenously developed a real time aircraft tracking system, can get the update on the location of a flying aircraft every 30 seconds.
