Paterson Joseph Wins RSL Christopher Bland Prize 2023

  • Paterson Joseph has won the Royal Society of Literature (RSL) Christopher Bland Prize for 'The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho'.
  • The Christopher Bland Prize is an annual prize awarded to a debut writer for work of fiction or non-fiction, who has published his first book over the age of 50. The winner receives a prize money of £10,000. This is the fifth year of the award.
  • Initially a one-man show written and performed by Joseph in 2018, the book illuminates the remarkable life of Charles Ignatius Sancho, British abolitionist, writer and composer, and the first known Black man to cast a vote in England.

Balaram Pani and Ashutosh Mishra, Awarded Prestigious Soul Of India Award

  • In a momentous celebration of their exceptional contributions to nation-building, Prof. Balaram Pani, Dean of Colleges at the University of Delhi, and Ashutosh Mishra, Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, were honoured with the esteemed Soul of India Award 2023.
  • The award ceremony took place at the House of Lords, Parliament of the United Kingdom, in London, where Lord Rami Ranger CBE, a Member of Parliament in the House of Lords, presented the awards. Reportedly the Minister of Law and Justice of India, Arjun Ram Meghwal also took part in the event.
  • The Soul of India Award is a prestigious accolade that recognizes individuals who have demonstrated unwavering dedication and outstanding achievements in their respective fields, embodying the essence of India's spirit. Bihar Govt. Felicitates Padma Awardee Subhadra Devi

  • Bihar government honoured renowned paper mache artiste Subhadra Devi at Delhi's Bihar Bhawan. The Government of Bihar, represented by Resident Commissioner IAS Kundan Kumar, honoured Subhadra Devi with a memento, a letter of appreciation, a shawl, and a generous cheque of Rs. 2 lakh.
  • Subhadra Devi was bestowed with the prestigious Padma Shri award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the art of paper mache. Her remarkable skills and artistic brilliance captivated the attention of the nation, earning her this distinguished honour in 2023.
  • Hailing from Salempur village in Pandaul Block of Madhubani district, Subhadra Devi has been deeply connected to the art of paper mache since 1980 when she received recognition from the state government's Industry Department. In 1991, the central government also acknowledged her immense talent and dedication.

Former PM Jacinda Ardern Receives New Zealand's Second-highest Honour

  • Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern received one of New Zealand's top honours, recognising her efforts for leading the country through the COVID-19 crisis, the terror attacks on two Christchurch mosques and the White Island volcanic eruption.
  • Ardern was named 'Dame Grand Companion', the second highest honour in New Zealand, on King Charles' birthday holiday celebrated by the country, and she made the coronation honours list for this year (2023). The awardee is usually chosen in New Zealand by the prime minister and then approved by the British monarch.
  • Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Ardern was recognised for her service during some of the greatest challenges New Zealand had faced in modern times.

Jagdish S. Bakan Wins UNESCO Award for Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Management

  • IFS officer Jagdish S. Bakan who won the prestigious Michel Batisse Award 2023 for biosphere reserve management from UNESCO was lauded by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin for his remarkable achievement.
  • The 2017 batch officer of the Indian Forest Service is currently the director of Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu.
  • The USD 12,000 award is given in memory of Dr. Michel Batisse for outstanding achievement in the management of biosphere reserves in line with the recommendations of the Seville Strategy.
  • Located at the south-eastern tip of India, the Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve is the first Marine Biosphere Reserve in South and South-east Asia. The Gulf is where the southward extension of the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean, and is one of the most biologically diverse regions in India.
  • Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve (GoMBR), extends between Toothukudi & Ramanathapuram districts; joint declaration of Government of India & Government of Tamil Nadu.

President Droupadi Murmu Conferred the Highest Civilian Award of Suriname

  • President Droupadi Murmu was conferred with Suriname's highest civilian award by her counterpart Chandrikapersad Santokhi to honour the deep-rooted bilateral ties. Murmu was in Suriname on a three-day state visit - her first since assuming office in July 2022.
  • She was conferred with the highest civilian honour of Suriname 'Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star' by the President of Suriname at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.
  • She said that this recognition holds immense significance, not only for her but also for the more than 1.4 billion people of India. She dedicated the honour to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between the two countries.
