Karan Johar Honoured by UK Parliament for Contribution to Entertainment Industry

  • Director Karan Johar was honoured by the British Parliament for his contribution to the global entertainment industry as he completed 25 years as a filmmaker in 2023.
  • Indian-origin House of Lords peer Baroness Sandy Verma presented the citation to Johar.
  • Johar made his directorial debut in 1998 with "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", and has gone on to become one of the most influential figures in the Indian film industry. As a director, his credits include "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…", "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna", and "My Name Is Khan". He has films such as "Kal Ho Naa Ho", "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Kapoor & Sons", and "Raazi" to his credit as a producer. Also a presenter, Johar hosts his celebrity chat show "Koffee With Karan".

Acharya Gopi Conferred for First Prof. Jayashankar Award

  • Eminent poet, literary critic and Sahitya Akademi Award recipient Acharya N. Gopi was conferred the Prof. Kothapalli Jayashankar Award instituted by Bharat Jagruthi, a cultural organisation and extended arm of Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The award was presented to Acharya Gopi at an event to be organised at Telangana Saraswatha Parishath in Abids. According to Bharat Jagruthi, the award has been instituted earlier this year (2023) for honouring the littérateurs every year.

Salman Rushdie Wins Prestigious German Peace Prize

  • Author Salman Rushdie was selected for the prestigious German prize for his literary work and for his resolve in the face of a constant threat to his life. The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for 2023 said that the author will receive the award in Frankfurt on October 22.
  • The award's Board of Trustees described Rushdie as a passionate defender of freedom of thought and expression - just as equally for himself as for those whose views he does not share.
  • He was awarded for his indomitable spirit, for his affirmation of life and for enriching our world with his love of storytelling.

Arundhati Roy Wins 45th European Essay Prize for 'Azadi'

  • Writer and activist Arundhati Roy was awarded the 45th European Essay Prize for lifetime achievement on the occasion of the French translation of her latest essay, 'Azadi'. The French translation 'Liberte, fascisme, fiction' appeared in Gallimard, a leading French publishing group.
  • The jury of the Prix European de I'Essai highlighted an enriching work in terms of reflection on the construction of the world and the relationship with language. Arundhati Roy uses the essay as a form of combat, analysing fascism and the way it is being structured. This is an issue that is increasingly occupying our lives. Her essays offer shelter to a multitude of people. In awarding the prize for her literary work, the jury also acknowledged the author's commitment to political action.

Gita Press, Gorakhpur, Selected for Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021

  • The Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021 will be conferred on Gita Press, Gorakhpur.
  • The decision to confer the award on Gita Press was taken by a jury headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after due deliberations in recognition of the publishing house's outstanding contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violent and other Gandhian methods.
  • The annual Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The award carries an amount of Rs. 1 crore, a citation, a plaque and an exquisite handicraft or handloom item.
  • The previous awardees include organisations such as the Indian Space Research Organisation, Ramakrishna Mission, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari and Sulabh International, New Delhi.

VP Jagdeep Dhankhar Conferd Fourth National Water Awards

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar conferred the fourth National Water Awards in New Delhi. The Jal Shakti Ministry has announced a total of 41 winners, covering 11 categories, including joint winners, for the 4th National Water Awards, 2022. Each award winner was conferred with a citation and a trophy as well as cash prizes in certain categories.
  • The 1st Prize for the Best State was conferred on Madhya Pradesh; Best District was conferred on Ganjam District, Odisha; Best Village Panchayat was conferred on Jagannadhapuram Village Panchayat, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Telangana; Best Urban Local Body was conferred on Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh; Best Media was conferred on Advance Water Digest Private Limited Gurugram, Haryana; Best School was conferred on Jamiyatpura Primary School, Mehsana, Gujarat; Best Institution for Campus usage was conferred on Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir; Best Industry was conferred on Barauni Thermal Power Station, Begusarai, Bihar; Best NGO was conferred on Arpan Seva Sansthan, Udaipur, Rajasthan; Best Water User Association was conferred on the Sanjeevani Piyat Sahkari Mandli Ltd, Narmada, Gujarat; and Best Industry for CSR Activities was conferred on HCL Technologies Ltd., Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
  • As part of the ongoing nationwide drive to realize the Government's vision of a 'Water Prosperous India', the award focused on encouraging the good work and efforts made by various individuals and organizations. It seeks to create awareness among people about the importance of water and motivate them to adopt best water use practices.

RBI Chief Named 'Governor of the Year' At London's Central Banking Awards

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das was awarded the "Governor of the Year" at the Central Banking Awards 2023 in London. Central Banking is a London-based international economic research journal.
  • Das is the second RBI governor to receive the award after Raghuram Rajan, who was given the title in 2015.
  • The National Bank of Ukraine was named the 2023 Central Bank of the Year.

Child Rights Advocate Lalitha Natarajan Wins 2023 Iqbal Masih Award

  • Chennai-based lawyer-activist Lalitha Natarajan was awarded the 2023 Iqbal Masih Award for the Elimination of Child Labour.
  • US Consul General Judith Ravin presented the award to Natarajan at a ceremony at the US Consulate General in Chennai.
  • As a leader in the fight to end exploitative child labour in southern India, Natarajan identifies child victims of trafficking, specifically bonded labour, assisting in their reintegration into society. In her role as a member of the Child Welfare Committee (North Zone), under the Department of Social Defence, Tamil Nadu, Natarajan ensures victims receive compensation under the Child Labour Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Besides working on child labour issues, Lalitha also provides legal and counselling support to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
  • The award is named after Iqbal Masih, a Pakistani child who was sold into slavery at the age of four and forced to work in a carpet factory. He escaped at the age of ten and became an outspoken advocate for the rights of child labourers. He was assassinated in 1995 at the age of twelve.
