World Mental Health Day

  • World Mental Health Day celebrated on October 10 is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
  • World Mental Health Day was celebrated for the first time on October 10, 1992, at the initiative of Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter.
  • The theme for World Mental Health Day 2021 was 'Mental Health in an Unequal World'.

World Post Day

  • World Post Day is celebrated every year on October 9, to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) across the world. UPA was established in the year 1874 in Switzerland. Postal systems have been in operation for many centuries.
  • World Post Day was first celebrated in 1969 at the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan. It was submitted by an Indian delegation named, Shri Anand Mohan Narula and since then, World Post Day has been celebrated all over the world in order to spotlight the importance of postal services.
  • Every year, the UPU's 192 member countries celebrate World Post Day to mark the importance of universal mail and the UPU's contributions to society and the global economy. Countries hold special stamp exhibitions and launch new postal initiatives. India hosts a week-long celebration each year over the week of October 9.
  • The theme for World Postal Day 2021 was 'Innovate to recover'.

Indian Air Force Day

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked its raising day, which is observed annually on October 8 as IAF Day. The year 2021 marked 89 years since the IAF's foundation, and, as always, celebrations took place at the Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad in the presence of the Chief of Air Staff and senior officials of the three armed forces.
  • The IAF was established on October 8, 1932, as a supporting force of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force. Initially known as the Royal Indian Air Force, the prefix Royal was dropped in 1950 when India transitioned into a Republic. The IAF is the air wing of the Indian Armed Forces and the fourth largest air force in the world. It is headed by an Air Chief Marshal (ACM), while the President of India is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.

Annual International G-20 Conference

  • India was represented by Finance Minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman represented India at the 13th Annual International G-20 conference.
  • During the conference, FM noted that, India is working for identifying the vacuum areas in international policy coordination, in the backdrop of assuming the G20 presidency in 2023.
  • India is also working for strengthening the effectiveness of institutions such as FATF (Financial Action Task Force)and IMF (International Monetary Fund).
  • According to FM, G20 presidency will provide an excellent platform for India for putting forward its vision regarding the future reflecting sustainability, innovation, inclusiveness and justice.
  • Emerging market economies will hold the presidency for G20 presidency till 2025. Indonesia will hold it in 2022 while India in 2023.

World Cotton Day

  • World Cotton Day is observed on October 7 annually. This product is grown across 75 countries in 5 continents and sustains at least 28.67 million growers.
  • For millions, cotton is a major source of livelihood including women as it provides employment and income to some of the poorest rural areas in the world.
  • The aim of observing UN World Cotton Day (WCD) annually on October 7 is to raise awareness about the cotton sector and the critical role it plays in economic development, international trade and poverty alleviation. Cotton is the only agricultural crop to provide both food and fiber. The annual celebrations for WCD provide a unique opportunity to recognize the historic importance of cotton as a global commodity.
  • The World Cotton Day was launched by World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2019 at the initiative of four sub-Saharan African cotton-producing states- Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali. This day offered an opportunity to countries to share knowledge and showcase cotton-related activities.
  • The theme for World Cotton Day 2021 was 'Cotton for Good'.

Ganga River Dolphin Day

  • In India, the 'Ganga River Dolphin Day' is observed every year on October 5, to raise awareness and encourage conservation of Ganga River Dolphins. It was on this day in 2010, that Ganga Dolphins were declared national aquatic animals. Then, in 2012, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Uttar Pradesh government jointly began the dolphin conservation campaign in the country.
  • The Gangetic Dolphins are included under the First Schedule of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. They have been declared "Endangered" under IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). They are listed under Appendix I as most endangered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). They are listed under Appendix II of Conservation on Migratory Species. The Vikramshila Ganges Dolphin Sanctuary was established in Bihar under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

World Teachers' Day

  • World Teachers' Day or International Teachers' Day is observed every year on October 5 to consider issues related to teachers and teaching. It focuses on appreciation, assessment and changes required for teachers and is also an occasion to honour teachers for their contribution towards students. World Teachers' Day is observed since 1994.
  • World Teachers' Day acknowledges the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 International Labour Organization (ILO)/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. The recommendation concerning the status of higher education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 recommendation.
  • The theme of World Teachers' Day 2021 is 'Teachers at the heart of education recovery'.
