Police Commemoration Day

  • Every year, October 21 is celebrated as the Police Commemoration Day, to pay tributes to all police personnel who died in the line of duty. Last year, tributes were also paid to the cops who lost their lives due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
  • The Police Commemoration Day remembers the ultimate sacrifice of 10 police personnel who lost their lives on October 21, 1959 in Ladakh while fighting the Chinese army.
  • The Chinese army opened fire and threw grenades at the Indian police party which comprised 20 personnel. Apart from the 10 personnel who were martyred, seven were taken as prisoners and the remaining three managed to escape.

PM Modi Addresses CVC-CBI Joint Meet

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed a joint conference of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Gujarat, in which he hailed a New India which is increasingly using digital tools to push back against age-old corrupt practices.
  • Declaring that India of the 21st-century "innovates, initiates, and implements", Prime Minister Modi said that people here are seeking a transparent system, efficient processes, and smooth governance. This, he said, will be made possible through the implementation of new-age digital tools.

Abhidhamma Day

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kushinagar in eastern Uttar Pradesh to inaugurate an international airport and attend an event marking Abhidhamma Day at Mahaparinirvana Temple.
  • The day marks the end of three-month rainy retreat - Varshavaas or Vassa - for the Buddhist monks and nuns during which time they stay at one place and pray.
  • The Union culture ministry and International Buddhist Confederation, in association with the government of Uttar Pradesh, is organising the Abhidhamma Day on the auspicious occasion of Ashwin Poornima.

World Osteoporosis Day

  • World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated on October 20 across the globe to raise awareness about the disease. The day was first celebrated by the United Kingdom's National Osteoporosis Society in the year 1996. The theme for 2021 is Serve Up Bone Strength.
  • Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bones become weak and brittle because of the loss of mineral density. Even sneezing, or a minor fall could lead to fracture when one is suffering from the condition. 

World Statistics Day

  • Every five years, World Statistics Day is marked on 20 October. The day is celebrated to mark the importance of statistics in human lives. The day aims to create awareness about the achievements of official statistics that were based on the values of service, professionalism, and integrity.
  • World Statistics Day is organised under the United Nations Statistical Commission every five years. The global campaign is coordinated by the Statistics Division of the UN's Department of Economic Affairs (UNSD). The UN will observe the next World Statistics Day on 20 October 2025, in accordance with its tradition of marking the day every five years.

International Chefs Day 2021

  • Every year the International Chefs' Day is celebrated across the globe on 20 October to create awareness about the profession and celebrate it. It was instituted to remind chefs that it was their duty to pass on their knowledge and culinary skills to the next generation of chefs with a sense of pride and commitment to the future.
  • Moreover, besides promoting the importance of a chef, the day also focuses on educating children around the world on eating healthy.
  • Like last year, the theme for International Chefs Day this year too is 'Healthy Food for the Future'. Through this theme, chefs across the world are spreading the message about the impact that the production and consumption of food has on the environment.

UIDAI to Host "Aadhaar Hackathon 2021"

  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will be hosting a Hackathon titled "Aadhaar Hackathon 2021" targeting the young innovators - who are still at various Engineering institutes and eager to step into the real world.
  • According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT , the Hackathon will commence on October 28 at midnight.

National Security Guard Celebrates 37th Foundation Day

  • Every year, the Raising Day of the National Security Guard (NSG) is celebrated on October 16. This year marks the 37th anniversary of the establishment of the NSG, popularly known as Black Cats.
  • An elite striking force, the NSG was established in 1984 after the Union Cabinet decided to create a "Federal Contingency Force" that was "well trained to tackle the various manifestations of terrorism."
  • According to the official website of the NSG, a bill for the establishment of the elite striking force was sent to the President by the Parliament in 1986. The President signed his assent on 22 September, 1986, and the NSG came into existence. The force is intended to be deployed in exceptional circumstances only and is not meant to take over the functions of other paramilitary forces or state police forces.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 worldwide and highlights worldwide poverty, violence and hunger.
  • The day aims to find ways to mitigate and eradicate poverty, acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty and give them a chance to be heard.
  • The event was first commemorated in Paris, France, in 1987 at the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro to honor victims of poverty, hunger, violence, and fear. The commemorative stone was unveiled by Joseph Wresinski, founder of the International Movement ATD Fourth World.
  • Then, in 1992, the United Nations (UN) officially designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
