Ganga River Dolphin Day

  • In India, the 'Ganga River Dolphin Day' is observed every year on October 5, to raise awareness and encourage conservation of Ganga River Dolphins. It was on this day in 2010, that Ganga Dolphins were declared national aquatic animals. Then, in 2012, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Uttar Pradesh government jointly began the dolphin conservation campaign in the country.
  • The Gangetic Dolphins are included under the First Schedule of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. They have been declared "Endangered" under IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). They are listed under Appendix I as most endangered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). They are listed under Appendix II of Conservation on Migratory Species. The Vikramshila Ganges Dolphin Sanctuary was established in Bihar under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

World Teachers' Day

  • World Teachers' Day or International Teachers' Day is observed every year on October 5 to consider issues related to teachers and teaching. It focuses on appreciation, assessment and changes required for teachers and is also an occasion to honour teachers for their contribution towards students. World Teachers' Day is observed since 1994.
  • World Teachers' Day acknowledges the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 International Labour Organization (ILO)/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. The recommendation concerning the status of higher education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 recommendation.
  • The theme of World Teachers' Day 2021 is 'Teachers at the heart of education recovery'.

World Animal Day

  • World Animal Day is observed every year on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, who was regarded as the patron saint of animals. The day was celebrated for the first time in 1925 by cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann to address the plight of animals and initiate work towards their protection -- both in the wild and domestic world.
  • Zimmermann had organised an event for the first time on March 24, 1925, at the Sport Palace in Berlin. Over 5,000 people had attended the event that was originally scheduled for October 4, to align with the fest day of Saint Francis of Assisi.
  • In 1931, World Animal Day became global during a world protection organisation conference in Florence, Italy. In 2002, the Finnish Association of Animal Protection Associations celebrated the day and even involved school children in its events.

World Habitat Day

  • World Habitat Day is the UN initiative that is aimed at promoting the basic right to adequate shelter and housing for everyone in a world which is densely populated, and has been affected by the impact of urbanisation. It is observed on the first Monday of every October, annually. This year the event falls on October 4. The theme for World Habitat Day 2021 is 'Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world'.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1985 had announced its decision to celebrate World Habitat Day annually. Following which the first World Habitat Day was observed in 1986 in Nairobi, Kenya based on the theme 'Shelter is my right'.

German Unity Day

  • German Unity Day is the National Day in Germany, celebrated on 3 October as a public holiday. It commemorates German reunification in 1990 when the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) were unified, so that for the first time since 1945 there existed a single German state. German Unity Day on 3 October has been the German National Holiday since 1990, when the reunification was formally completed.

International Day of Non-Violence

  • Every year October 2, which is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, is also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence by the United Nations (UN). Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as the tallest leader of India's independence movement and was a pioneer of the philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence). The famous Sanskrit phrase 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharma' was also popularised by Gandhi, which loosely translates to 'non-violence is the highest moral virtue'.
  • International Day of Non-Violence was first observed in 2007 when the UN General Assembly passed a resolution and stated that this day is an occasion to 'disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness. The resolution was passed with a goal to secure a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding with the help of the teachings of India's global icon who inspired millions to adopt the path of non-violence.

International Coffee Day

  • Every year, International Coffee Day is observed on October 1, to celebrate and promote the use of coffee. There are many who believe that coffee might pose ill effects on their health, therefore, on this day people are educated about the various benefits of this beverage. On International Coffee Day, the hard work and efforts of these workers and people who are associated with the coffee industry are also recognised.
  • Considering the number of sectors and workers involved, the day is not only observed to cherish the beverage but also to voice out for the injustices suffered by the sector and the people associated with it. The day also aims to promote the fair trade of coffee and bring the plight of coffee growers across the globe to the limelight.
  • For the first time, International Coffee Day was celebrated back in 2015. The International Coffee Organisation (ICO) decided to dedicate the day to all coffee lovers in 2014, but the first official Coffee Day was launched in 2015 in Milan. However, different countries celebrate their own national coffee days on different dates. Back in 1997, the ICO first celebrated International Coffee Day in China and later in 2009, it celebrated the day in Taiwan. Nepal observed the first International Coffee Day on November 17, 2005.

International Day of the Older Person

  • The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year.
  • On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.
  • The holiday is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
  • This holiday is similar to National Grandparents Day in the United States and Canada as well as Double Ninth Festival in China and Respect for the Aged Day in Japan. The observance is a focus of ageing organizations and the United Nations Programme on Ageing.
  • The theme for 2021 was "Digital Equity for All Ages".
