Martyrs' Day

  • Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day is celebrated on March 23 every year to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who gave their lives for India's independence from the British rule. This day is remembered as a dark chapter in the pages of history as the British government hanged Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. Thus Shaheed Diwas is celebrated to remember these great revolutionaries who sacrificed themselves for the country's independence.
  • In India, there are seven days declared as Martyrs' Day (at national level also known as Sarvodaya day). They are named in honour of those who are recognised as martyrs for the nation.

World Meteorological Day

  • World Meteorological Day is celebrated on March 23 to mark the importance of the atmosphere of the earth and behaviour of the people connected with each other. The day was established by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and it concentrates on the behaviour of Earth's atmosphere.On this occasion, several activities and events are organised to raise awareness.
  • This day on March 23, 1950, the World Meteorological Organisation Convention came into force and became UNs specialised agency in 1951 for meteorology, operational hydrology, and related geophysical sciences. The first World Meteorological Day was held on March 23, 1961.
  • The theme of the World Meteorological Day 2022 was 'Early Warning and Early Action'.

Shaheed Diwas 2022: India Remembers Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev on Martyr's Day

  • It was on March 23, 1931, when the three were hanged to death in the Lahore Central Jail in British India (now Pakistan) by Britishers. March 23 every year is observed as Shaheed Diwas to mark the death anniversary of Indian freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar.
  • In 1928, Bhagat Singh plotted to kill a police officer to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai's death.

World Water Day

  • Every year, March 22 is observed and celebrated as World Water Day to increase awareness about the importance of fresh water and the need to conserve it. The day is all about taking action to fight against the global water crisis. The main focus of Day is to support the idea of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030 and help achieve the target. Due to increasing temperature and growing population, the world is facing water scarcity.
  • Officially the idea of World Water Day was a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly conference on Environmental and Development in Rio De Janeiro in 1992. It was then that the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution stating that every year, March 22 will be marked as World Water Day starting 1993.
  • The theme of World Water Day 2022 was "Groundwater: making the invisible visible". The theme was decided by UN-water at its 30th meeting in Rome. It was proposed by International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC).

World Down Syndrome Day

  • World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed every year on March 21. It is a global campaign which is observed annually to spread awareness about Down Syndrome.
  • According to the official website of the United nations (UN), Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in 2011, declared March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day. It was celebrated for the first time in the year 2012.
  • The theme for World Down Syndrome Day 2022 (WDSD) was '#InclusionMeans'. It highlighted the importance of collective understanding and global conversation about Down Syndrome, which would empower people around the world to advocate for full inclusion in society for people with Down syndrome and disabilities.

World Forestry Day

  • The International Day of Forests (also known as World Forestry Day) is celebrated every year on March 21. The main aim of the day is to raise awareness of the significance of all types of forests. The day is to celebrate to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations as well as to increase the public awareness among communities about the values, significance and contributions of the forests to balance the life cycle on the earth.
  • The theme for 2022 was "Forests and sustainable production and consumption."
  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.

World Poetry Day

  • Every year World Poetry Day is held on March 21 to celebrate the most treasured cultural and linguistic expression and identity in the form of poems.
  • This day is dedicated to honour the poets and treasuring the traditions of poetry for the new generation. The day is celebrated in different educational institutions, starting from schools to universities in the form of theatre, dance, painting, and writing.
  • The day was first started by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) at its 30th General Conference in Paris in the year 1999.
  • The reason behind observing this day is to preserve linguistic diversity through poetry for the endangered languages that need to be heard.

36th International Geological Congress Held in New Delhi

  • The 36th International Geological Congress (IGC), themed "Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Future" was held on 20-22 March, 2022 on a virtual platform in New Delhi.
  • The 36th IGC was a joint endeavour of the Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the Science Academies of Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Described as the Olympics of Geosciences, the IGCs are held quadrennial, under the aegis of the International Union of Geological Congress (IUGS), the Scientific Sponsor of the IGCs. They draw participants to the tune of around 5000 - 7000 delegates from all over the world.
  • The event provided a unique platform for knowledge and experience sharing in the field of geosciences and professional networking. It gave first-hand information on latest technologies in mining, mineral exploration and management of water, mineral resource and environment. It also facilitated increased academic production and created opportunities for capacity building across geoscientific streams.

International Day of Happiness

  • International Day of Happiness, also known as World Happiness Day, is celebrated every year on March 20. It is the day when happiness is given the most importance and the significance of being happy is recognised worldwide. This day is also used to spread awareness about the importance of being happy and how happiness affects our life in positive ways. It also urges nations to create a space for the happiness of their citizens.
  • Before the International Day of Happiness was established, together with Luis Gallardo, President of the World Happiness Foundation, Jayme Illien founded "Happytalism." Illien ran a campaign at the United Nations from 2006 to 2012 to encourage and advance the primacy of happiness, well-being, and democracy.
  • The International Day of Happiness officially established it in 2012 and first commemorated it in 2013.

CRPF Holds 83rd Raising Day Parade in Jammu

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted its Raising Day parade outside its Delhi headquarters for the first time on March 19 with Union Home Minister Amit Shah taking salute at the march past in Jammu.
  • Flanked by CRPF Director General Kuldeip Singh, Home Minister handed over gallantry medals to the force personnel and trophies for best establishments in different categories at the event held at the Maulana Azad Stadium in the heart of Jammu city.
