October 5 to be National Dolphin Day, Decides National Board for Wildlife

  • The union environment ministry designated October 5 as National Dolphin Day, to be observed annually starting this year.Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav said generating awareness and community participation is integral for conservation of this dolphins, an indicator species.
  • Dolphins act as ideal ecological indicators of a healthy aquatic ecosystem and conservation of the dolphins will, therefore, benefit the survival of the species and also, the people dependent on the aquatic system for their livelihood.

World Theatre Day

  • World Theatre Day (WTD) is an international observance celebrated on 27th March. It was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute.
  • World Theatre Day was initiated in 1962 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on 27th March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau (France) in 1962. It was first in Helsinki, and then in Vienna at the 9th World Congress of the ITI in June 1961 that President Arvi Kivimaa proposed on behalf of the Finnish Centre of the International Theatre Institute that a World Theatre Day be instituted. The proposal, backed by the Scandinavian centres, was carried with acclamation.

Earth Hour: BSES Urges Consumers in Delhi to Switch-off Appliances on 26 Mar

  • Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet. It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.
  • In 2022, it was held on March 26.
  • Each year Earth Hour has a theme, and the theme for Earth Hour 2022 was Shape Our Future'.

Indian Psychiatric Society National Conference held in Visakhapatnam

  • In March 2022, the national conference, being hosted jointly by IPS, A.P. State branch, Government Hospital Mental Care and Visakha Psychiatric Society, was inaugurated by Justice P. Laxmana Reddy, Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The theme chosen for the three-day meet is 'Bridging minds … Connecting generations'. The focus areas would be on drug and alcohol abuse in society, stress among students and growing incidence of suicides, depression and anxiety, old-age problems and dementia.The theme chosen for ANCIPS – 2022 'Bridging minds … Connecting generations' was very appropriate in view of the growing generation gap and its impact on society.

International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

  • International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is marked on 25 March every year to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice. The Day is observed with ceremonies and activities at United Nations Headquarters in New York and at United Nations offices around the world.
  • 2022 Theme: "Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism".

International Day of the Unborn Child

  • The International Day of the Unborn Child is an annual commemoration of unborn fetuses, observed as a day of opposition to abortion, on March 25. It was established by Pope John Paul II to coincide with the Feast of the Annunciation. John Paul II viewed the day as "a positive option in favour of life and the spread of a culture for life to guarantee respect for human dignity in every situation".
  • In 1993, El Salvador became the first nation to officially celebrate what was called a Day of the Right to Be Born. Subsequently other countries have initiated official celebrations for the unborn, such as Argentina with the Day of the Unborn in 1998, and Chile with Day of the Conceived and Unborn, Guatemala with the National Day of the Unborn, and Costa Rica with the National Day of Life Before Birth, all in 1999.

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day

  • World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is observed on March 24 to spread awareness about the disastrous health, social, and economic consequences of TB and to take efforts to end the TB epidemic globally.
  • World TB Day is one of eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Chagas Disease Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Patient Safety Day and World AIDS Day.
  • In 1982, on the one-hundredth anniversary of Robert Koch's presentation, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) proposed that March 24 be proclaimed an official World TB Day.
  • Each year World TB Day has a theme and the theme of World TB Day 2022 was "Invest to End TB. Save Lives." The theme emphasises the critical need to invest resources to accelerate the fight against tuberculosis and meet the commitments made by leaders around the world to end tuberculosis.
