International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is marked every year on October 17. It is a day to raise awareness about the global issue of poverty and how it is a violation of human rights and of human dignity. The day also honours the courage of people living in poverty and their everyday struggles.
  • The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to 17 October 1987, to commemorate the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. More than a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris. This was where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948.
  • On December 22, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly, through resolution 47/196 declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
  • The theme for International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2022 was "Dignity for All in Practice".

In a First, Army Day Parade to be Held in Bengaluru on January 15 Next Year

  • The Indian Army decided to shift the base of the Army Day Parade that is organised in Delhi on January 15 every year to Bengaluru, said Army officials in the know of the matter.
  • This comes days after the Indian Air Force held its annual flypast and parade from Hindon near Delhi to Chandigarh. The Army Day Parade is held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment and marks the appointment of General K M Cariappa as the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army. General Cariappa later went on to become India's first field marshal.
  • The Army Day is celebrated to acknowledge and honour soldiers for their selfless service to the nation. Besides different regiments of the army taking out parades, many soldiers are honoured with bravery awards and medals.
  • The aim behind the changing the location for the Army Day Parade is to facilitate deeper connections with people all over the country as well as to bring governance closer to the masses.

World Food Day

  • World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on October 16. The day is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the founding of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945. Many other organisations concerned with food security such as the World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development also celebrate the day.
  • The day is marked not only to celebrate the amazing food that we get to eat every day, but to also spread awareness about those who struggle to get even one meal in a day.
  • The day was first established in November 1979. The idea was suggested by former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr Pal Romany. Since then the day has been celebrated by more than 150 countries around the world.
  • Each year World Food Day has a theme and the 2022 theme was 'Leave No One behind'.

World Students' Day

  • October 15 of every year is celebrated as World Students' Day in honour of former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam, who was born on the same day in 1931. The day aims to acknowledge the efforts of Kalam towards education and students.
  • The United Nations declared October 15 as World Students' Day in 2010.

World Standards Day

  • World Standards Day is observed every year on October 14. This day, also known as International Standards Day, strives to educate consumers, policymakers, and businesses about the value of standardisation.
  • The International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) was founded in 1947 with 67 technical committees. The first World Standards Day, however, was formally inaugurated in 1970 by Faruk Sunter, then-President of the ISO.
  • The date of 14 October was chosen to commemorate the first meeting of delegates from 25 countries on 14 October 1946 in London, who decided to design a global organisation to facilitate standardisation. They created the ISO a year later.
  • World Standards Day recognises the contributions of groups like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and the ISO, as well as the professionals, who collaborate with them.
  • The theme for 2022 World Standards Day was 'Shared Vision for a Better World.'

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

  • International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is an international day that encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities and nations. The United Nations General Assembly designated October 13 as International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction as part of its proclamation of International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
  • In 2002, by a further resolution, the General Assembly decided to maintain the annual observance as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including prevention, mitigation, and preparedness.
  • In 2009, the UN General Assembly decided to designate October 13 as the official date for this day, and also changed the name to International Day for Disaster Reduction.

World Sight Day

  • World Sight Day is observed worldwide every year on the second Thursday of October. This World Health Organization-designated day fell on October 13 this year (in 2022). The purpose of World Sight Day is to increase public awareness about blindness, vision impairment, vision care, and ocular issues.
  • The Lions Club Foundation, in collaboration with organisations dedicated to preventing blindness worldwide, was the entity that first established World Sight Day. The first celebration was held on 8 October 1984. Later, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IABP) coordinated and recognised it as VISION 2020, and it became a collaborative programme directed by the WHO and IABP members in which non-government organisations, eye care groups, and eye hospitals may participate and spread awareness about these challenges from anywhere in the globe.
  • The theme for World Sight Day 2022 is "Love Your Eyes." The Love Your Eyes campaign urges people to put their personal eye health first while fighting for globally accessible, reasonably priced, and readily available eye care.
